Do u have speakers

Jun 16, 2022, 5:21 PM

The turntable thread was fun conversation for me.
Post about your speakers.
Nothing in the audio system has as much impact or effect on what you hear as does speakers (or headphones).

I have way too many speakers most have not been hooked up in years.

Here is the system in my RedNeck Bar:

Here is a fun photo of my speakers at an audio show:

These retailed new at $20K, but I never buy new. Most don't like McIntosh speakers because they do not have the power to open them up. These can be tri-amped. I use 2 Bob Carver (SunFire) amps as mono blocks putting 2400watts to each speaker. That seems to be enough.

Had a pair of JBL L112’s when I went to Clemson. They cost half a semester, all in. The stupidity of youth.

That’s back before JBL went commercial and all you saw in studios was JBL. Anyway a few years ago I decided to do a home theater. Went around the country buying L series to match the 112’s for fronts along with two 3 cubic foot Miller Kneisel subs. 1600 clean, legit, stump pulling watts!

I have a few subs. I have a big one wedged behind my adirondack chair here as I type this on the porch.
I have one that weighs way over a hundred pounds just on the lower right of that photo above. It is not hooked in right now as those speakers don't have need of it.

I'll post as to my TV system later, or maybe not.
One deal as to subs is some that do explosions well don't do stereo music as well. A music sub must be tight and quick.
My view on a sub is that if you can walk into a room with a blindfold and point to it, it is not adjusted right.

I mostly play tunes on the porch.
Many audiophiles scoff at this. Being just an "audio nut", I don't care.
Over 20 years have changed it out many times. Right now my porch system is very good. I would upgrade if I come across a way to do that. Keep in mind I don't play to the yard, have it centered where my chair is. Speakers are near field about 6' from each ear.
Klipsch makes great gear if you like horns, and I do.

The amp should be in at the end of the month. Crossed fingers. Getting antsy and May hook them up to a 42 year old onkyo to test. Will let you know. The Sonos amp is 125 watts a side, so neighbors will be happy. Thankfully there’s an island in front of the house, so no direct shot.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

125 watts

Jun 16, 2022, 8:18 PM

Watts and volume do have some connect but less than many think.
A 20watt amp hooked to something like Klipsch will get your attention and sound great. Your 125 watt Sonos amp could never open up things like McInstosh as it is not made for that.
The audio deal is --- "SYSTEM". You pair things that work together to bring a better sound.
Building a "system" is difficult and fun.
What might sound great in my home might not in another's as the environment is different.

You are Spot On about the listening "environment" being

Jun 17, 2022, 10:42 AM

the single biggest factor as to how good a system sounds. I will never forget having a super cheap POS set of Kmart "SoundDesign" speakers (with replaced upgraded speaker cones, the originals had quickly expired) and an FM integrated tuner amp as a junk system. I can't remember why, but once took it to a friend's house trailer, where he had long "shag" carpet. I sat those POS speakers on the floor, and when we started playing tunes, my jaw almost dropped off. Something about the shag carpet just increased, amplified and mellowed out the low end, all at the same time, making those things sound better than they were capable of.

So, no doubt, the "environment" can have a HUGE effect on the sound experience.

Heck, I thought I had speakers. You ..have speakers !!! Are those old tubes popping up from the amps/preamps or whatever they are?

2024 white level membermilitary_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

are those tubes

Jun 16, 2022, 6:16 PM

There are tubes.
The most famous is the Bob Carver 'Sunfire Classic Vaccum Tube Preamp'. You can get these from time to time in an estate sale. No owner would sell one (I have 3).

The SunFire amps below are soild state, the meter lights up. These are 600X2 at 8 ohms and 1200X2 to the 4ohm speakers. These old amps sell for more than new and hard to find. They have power !!

Lots of tubes on the right 2 carver tube amps and an Aric Audio preamp. They are hooked to different speakers (def teck). Aric is good to work with, had to mail that back a couple times for adjustments. He is an expert.

I installed a set of Jensen Triax (6x9's in the back and 6 1/2's) in the doors along with a Pioneer KE-2000 head unit (you don't have to punch to get great sound).

A friend of mine borrowed the car and wrecked it just three days after I got it all installed. Before we could get to the shop that towed it from the accident scene (within hours of the accident), someone had already broken in and stolen the head unit an all four speakers.

heard good things about the Shangri la ,problem is the tube amp that drives them is insanely expensive.. We are talking 50k for that thing. But that is hands down the best electrostatic on the planet, but there are better sounding cans for enjoying music. I am utterly astonished my the meze classics, got them yesterday. There is not a better $300 set of cans still in production.. If A/B'd them to a Bunch of Novices with the Arya stealth, most newbs would go with the meze. They have a consumer oriented tuning up to about 200hz(kick drums come way forward), a perfect linear response through the mids, nice recessed upper mids for a relaxed sound, and some sparkle on top. It just works, despite their technical limitations.

they have a cheaper energizer for their Jade model, but to make those do their thing, you need the supplied amp. As a combo, it is 50k, but for that money, a Sennheiser He-1 may be a better overall set-up. Both are ridiculously overpriced, but they 2 of the most detailed Headphones. I have a couple of pairs of cans that sell for an average mortgage payment, and a few cheaper pairs for fun. I love all equally. I am not as much into speakers, as Captain Spalding up there, except for movies, so I use powered nearfields with a cheap sub. Gets the job done if properly dialed in for your room. Positioning a sub is a science. A 20 htz wavelength io 60 feet long, so if out of phase, you get nothing.

I have a pair of Definitive Technology floor standing speakers. I use them as the front speakers of a 5.1 surround sound system. When I bought them, I was aiming for something better than average, but not top of the line. They hit the mark.

I also have a pair of JBL floor standing speakers that I bought to upgrade from 15-year-old Kenwood home theater in a box speakers. These speakers are also part of a 5.1 surround sound system. My goal was to get something good (not great). They hit the mark. Even better, I got them on clearance directly from JBL (60% off retail).

For my computer, I have a pair of Klipsch bookself speakers. They came basically free with a Pioneer receiver I bought. They are good for what they are being used for.

I love McIntosh speakers and equipment! I currently have a set of XL1's that are boxed up. I did have the XL1W subwoofer but traded it in for an SL1 powered subwoofer. At the time everything was hooked up and running, I had NAD Amp and integrated amp bridged together. I still have the NAD equipment, but it's boxed up along with everything else that I own (stereo wise). I have bought used McIntosh pre-amp (C26), amp(MC-502 I think), and tuner(MR-77) since retiring the NAD equipment.

I bought a pair of Klipsch horns (don't remember model nbr) when I lived in G'ville. I knew Billy from Mitchell's Stereo. He bought a pair of the XL1's to my home to demo them against the Klipsh's. I bought the XL1's and returned the Klipsh's.

When the XRT18 speakers came out, I fell in love with them and wanted to get a pair but never did. I should probably get the equipment checked out since it's sat boxed up for 10 - 12 years now.

I've also owned a pair of Ohm speakers that I liked pretty good prior to this. Other speakers were just middling JBL and Pioneer stuff.
