And no, HIPAA doesn't apply to you unless you have a fiduciary or medical responsibility to him.
Many caregivers divulge confidential information in confidence and then try to impress their confidants with their 'legal' obligations to maintain privacy. They are wrong. Those legal obligations do not apply to third parties. But if the confidant reveals the information that could only have come from a caregiver, guess whose career is at stake? Not the third party's: the caregiver's.
My pastor had a son in medical school. Amazing that a pastor could be so tight-lipped about ministry-related confidences but blabbed from the pulpit about everything medical-related his son mentioned to him. It prompted quite a discussion in our church, which includes numerous caregivers.

I had my tonsils removed when I was 18. That eating ice cream myth is a load of nonsense. The only thing I was interested in eating was Demerol.
