SEC & B10 has always been proactive in expansion ACC is reactive

Jul 24, 2021, 5:21 PM

That why one reason Both are the best conf

1990 SEC wanted FSU & AR when FSU wasn’t going to join they ask Clemson who declined and settled on UofSC that expansion lead to SEC champ game which was a financial windfall

ACC was reactive and added FSU and was content. With only 1 team and missed out on PSU who wanted to join the ACC due geography

B10 brought in PSU

1993
Big 8 and 4 team from SW from Big12 & 2nd conf Champ game added

2004
ACC added Miami & VT then 2005 BC (wanted Syr & BC over VT Initially in 2004 but UVA blocked that due to VA governor ACC could not get that right and add 3 at same time and who would want BC or Syr over VT)

2011
B10 adds Nebraska (dumb move for Nebraska)

SEC begins talking to A&M and Missouri rumor is these 2 plus Clemson & FSU going to SEC

ACC is again reactionary to not get out done and not lose Clemson & FSU and add Pitt & Syr (woohoo) (think cause the blue belly’s didn’t get Syr in 2004 and need even # teams)

This forces WV to Big12 to give them 10 teams after the 3 team defections

2012
B10 out maneuvers ACC gets Maryland (yeah I hated them) and Rutgers (like who cares) leaving ACC with odd number

ACC adds Louisville who’s was a good move ( I would of preferred Lou & WV over Pitt & Syr any day for FB and fans in the seat)

2021
SEC forming super conf by adding TX & OU

Now ACC is scrambling hoping B12 don’t raid VT or Louisville or NC team and SEC and B19 leaves the ACC in the dust or scrambling for WV Cincinnati UCF and if we pray correctly ND

That the difference in a well managed conf and the pathetic ACC leadership

PS Wake brings nothing to the ACC why are they still in? Oh yeah cause 75 years ago it made since, they were an original member and they have a pretty campus

I agree with all your points except the Wake one. Wake brings nothing to the ACC. But you can't just kick them out. Have you ever heard of a conference kicking a team out for being bad at football?

It's happened 3 times

Jul 24, 2021, 7:17 PM

The Southern Conference, The ACC and the Independent group all kicked out the University of South Carolina for being terrible at football.

And the Metro conference kicked them out

of the non-football sports. They truly are the doormat of college sports.

I forgot about the Metro. They had some good schools there.

Pretty sure Virginia Tech and Florida State were a part of that back in the 90's. Granted it was strictly a basketball conference for Independent football schools. Times have really changed.

Kicking Wake out with as good or better ACC record in FB the last couple of years than half of the other ACC schools in FB would be laughable.;)

Agree with all of your points. If you follow the expansion of both the Big Ten and SEC, you'll notice that it was calculated - especially the Big Ten's. People laughed at the Big Ten bringing in Rutgers but that was the conference's access into the Jersey - NYC market. Just look at the huge TV markets now in the Big Ten's area: New York City, Philadelphia, D.C., Baltimore, Chicago, Detroit, Milwaukee, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Cincinnati, and Columbus. And before anyone laughs at Columbus, it now has a population inside the city of 950,000 and surrounding area of 2.1 million. And I'm probably leaving out a big market or two.

I saw a projection that the SEC's payout to each member in 2024 to be around $90 million after the addition of OK and Texas. The Big Ten's - staying put - will be somewhere around $80 to 85 million. Both are more than double any other conference. That's why I chuckle when I see references about pulling PSU from the Big Ten. It's all about money

The ACC had no vision and no ambition. They didn't see that football was king and the leadership at Clemson was just like them. Now that everyone understands we're in an outsider position. I hope it all collapses and we start over. Ain't no way Vandy gets more football money than Clemson in a just World.

Vanderbilt ? Hell, what about Rutgers ? They rake in tens of millions every year from the Big Ten and couldn't beat "the sisters of the poor" in a football game

The blame goes all the way back to 1953 when the ACC was

Jul 24, 2021, 7:52 PM

started with mostly smaller state universities and two small private schools.

They should have gotten on the Penn State bus then.

Joking of course but It's easier being proactive when you have such a great product re: TV revenue and alumni populations.

John Swofford was the biggest, dumbest commissioner ever to run the ACC. John Swofford is the very reason why the ACC is laughed at when it comes to being even a mid level, mediocre FB conference!!!!

Nebraska joining the B1G was a mistake for the B1G...

Jul 24, 2021, 10:44 PM

not Nebraska.

Nebraska was a declining program nobody cared about anymore. Their slide continued after joining the B1G. Nebraska brought absolutely nothing to the table. Their TV audience is tiny, their core recruiting territory is very small and their "brand" is worth very little.

If Nebraska could go back in time, they would still join the B1G because of the huge revenue windfall. That has saved their bacon. If the B1G could go back in time, I doubt they would admit Nebraska because they have been such a big disappointment.

Nebraska left the Big 12 because they felt disrespected and ignored. This continued after switching conferences but at least they got the money.
