Scheme and player development

I can think of at least 3 Heisman winners who were transfers. In the game between Tennessee and Georgia yesterday, you had a transfer who was the leading Heisman candidate against a walk on. And look at how they both performed.
Here we are with a 5 star backing up another 5 star, and we are getting outplayed at the QB position week after week. It is either talent recognition (recruiting/coaching), player development (coaching), or scheme (coaching). Mix in o-line play, receiver play…same issues with recruiting, player development and scheme.
We did NOT get out-talented last night.

Calling what Streeter does “coaching,” is an insult to coaches everywhere.

Agree - we've apparently fallen into the star rating trap. I am amazed at how poorly our receivers block and how soft and unphysical they are.
Defense appears to have lost it's nasty edge. They used to bully teams, even highly regarded teams. Now we get run over by mediocre teams.
I'm not disparaging the kids, heck, they are 18-20 year old kids, but they aren't being turned into elite D1 football players.
They look like they are going through the motions
This looked too much like the Clemson teams that got TBowden fired.
During the Bowden days, my son and I used to talk about being frauds. Unfortunately, it appears we've returned there.

Many on the D are likely "over it" by now and looking towards the draft.

Good post. I agree with you that fundamentally, we have the talent to be a CFP team. At WR, I’m still not totally sure but those three issues you mentioned, talent recognition, development and scheme are all much larger issues than pure talent.
I think our scheme is hugely problematic. We have far too many slow developing plays, have for a long time. Defenses are faster now and will continue to be. We don’t have good enough WRs on the outside to play jump ball football the way we did with Williams, Higgins, etc. Our scheme last night was atrocious. I legit don’t know what the coaches and players did on the off week.
Development / recruiting - I can think of many failed examples but I’ll start with a slot WR in Renfrow who bailed us out, a lot. Yes, he was a unicorn walk on. But we did a very poor job finding another viable slot receiver until this season in AW. And we’ve done very little to design plays to get him the ball more. I go back to a guy like Percy Harvin. Florida did everything they could to find ways to get him the ball in different formations. We used to do that some with Watkins. We sorta try to do it with Shipley but I see very little of that at WR. I could go on and on about how our use of TEs for the past couple seasons. That’s been better this year.
The best way for Clemson to improve it’s recruiting on offense is to have a solid identity on offense. We don’t have that now. We have a pretty good running game, but we’re not talented enough to be a top level running team the way say a Georgia or Michigan have built. So we’re out there getting Clemson guys who fit the culture, and that’s good, but a mix of players who may or may not fit our scheme, whatever that is.
