Saturday night's 1st down play-calling question

Oct 3, 2016, 6:31 PM

While watching Saturday night's game and trying not to have a heart attack, I kept wondering what was up with the play-calling on 1st down. I don't know the stats, but maybe you do. It seemed like too many times the go-to play was a handoff to The Wayne Train. Don't get me wrong. I know he's a great player, but isn't he just as great a player on 2nd or 3rd down? I felt like Louisville keep begin to key on Gallman. I know he got his yards, but it seemed almost too predictable. What did you see? What do you think?

I agree.... they're keying on Gallman limited us to

42 points

200+ rushing

300+ passing

and a win

i wish they would have taken something else away

They are trying to set up a long pass.
They have been doing it all season and so far it hasn't worked to well.
It's been leaving us with a lot of 3rd and longs.

Let the professionals take care of the play calling.
You do realize that they've only lost one game? And that wasn't on them. It was that pesky kickoff return by Kenyan Drake.

Sure here you go..

This is what we did on 1st down.

First Half
Gallman run - 5 times
Watson run - 2 times
Pass - 14 times (5 were on the 30 second drive)

Second Half
Gallman run - 8 times
Watson run - 2 times
Pass - 4 times

I think the overall offensive production was very good, but we definitely went run heavy on 1st down in the 2nd half. Our first 5 drives of the second half all started with Gallman runs on 1st down.

I think we had 26 first downs.***

Thanks for that breakdown. It helped a lot.

I'm not saying we're smarter than the coaches. We're not smart, but . . . if we see a trend, don't you think the opposing DC will see a trend, too. Some of those 2nd half 1st down plays to WGallman may have played into our having to turn the ball back over to LJackson when we needed to keep it out of his hands. A shorter, "hot" passing game on first down MAY have opened up WGallman for longer, more productive runs on less predictable downs. It may have kept the Louisville defense a little more honest in their sets.

I understand if some disagree. I'm just glad I'm not running the offense.

I do not understand any of these comments. Wayne was 7 carries for 73 yards at half. I want to know why we did not give it to him more often. And that shorter, "hot" passing game - that is what started the Louisville comeback.

Wayne had a good night, but we did get predictable

Oct 3, 2016, 6:53 PM

with the first down to Wayne plays. I would have LOVED to see Gallman get the ball on a third and 4-5ish. They way we set it up, he could have busted loose for a TD if we were on their end of the field.

It's against the rules to pass on first down***

I was saying the same thing during the game but he did a good job of fighting for those little 3 yard plays here and ther and keeping the momentum of the game going for us I think as long as he can at least keep getting back to the line of scrimmage Its a good call

Ha! Ignore the trash talkers! You make an excellent point and I have said it all year! We wanna take our foot off the gas after we have a lead and it drives me insane! Receivers would be runnin wide ### open downfield on first down! Why change your offensive philosophy at halftime when it's working! I bet Wayne would agree!
