If some of those guys play like they did recently on the tour, it doesn't look good for a win.

I'm okay with the Koepka pick, in that they need to have the best golfers, but picking JT over Lucas is a travesty, ageism at its best. Might be watching this one with mixed feelings.

Ageism? I also read on the board that it's European Elitism?

The labeling of things/people/issues that we don't like has got to stop. It's neither of those things, and it's just a cop out for any real thought.

JT is a Country Club pick all the way; one of the young guns; PGA media name; hobnobs with all the big names and other Major winners; he absolutely reeks of good ol’ boy’s club and favoritism.
The method for determining picks is more detailed, more statistically oriented, more definitive than ever before. But in the end they go with the guy who garnishes everything with arrogance rather than the player who has lit up the tour leading into the Finals.
Elitism. Wear it sucker. You west coast libs are plain tiresome, if not illiterate

what another said earlier today, European Elitism (whatever that means).
For sure he is picked because of the good ole boys club, it's the way a lot of stuff is in our country….it has nothing to do with liberal or conservative, its the way of life. It's who know you quite often in life and people looking out for people close to them. So all in all I was saying why in the world is this (and quite often a lot of stuff) get labeled things when it just is what it is.

It’s the same idiot you are replying to now - olemike - that said “European elitism”. Didn’t make sense then, doesn't make sense now.

to, I guess, make yourself feel better? First of all, I was born in good 'ole South Carolina. Raised there all my life, still live in the south. So the same education (I guess you were educated?) you went through I went through as well. So we are pretty similar, not all that different, but you keep being a flame thrower and feel good about yourself while I keep moving forward in life and enjoying myself.

C'mon guys. Lucas was the longest of longshots to make it.

He would have had to have, in my estimation, a Top Five finish in the Tour Championship for Zach Johnson to give him serious consideration. Lucas was already noticeably cooling off with the flat stick the last couple tournaments, and really never got much going in the Tour Championship. I can't really find fault with Captain Johnson's picks, or his rationale for them.

Justin Thomas has played poorly this season. I'm not saying that Lucas had to be chosen (he did deserve it more than some) but I'm sure there are plenty who had much better seasons than JT.

JT was mainly picked for his 4-ball/foursomes record. He will pair well with either Jordan or Rickie and maybe both. I won't be surprised to see him left out of a singles round or two unless he is playing a lot better.

Exactly. JT is off right now but is still one hell of a player. Team him with a Spieth or Fowler and I would put my money on those possible 2somes everyday.

Don’t all team members play the singles portion on the last day? I don’t think there’s a way to hide someone playing poorly that day.

You're right. I had a brain fart thinking they had some other singles in between but that isn't correct. I'm guessing with JT they think they could lose a single from him but gain at least 2 pts in his 4-ball/foursome pairings. However, he might surprise and get back to form. I guess it will be interesting to see it unfold.

I think Zach said something interesting about JT that on follow up he kind of tried to minimize. He said the 6 automatic qualifiers were pretty vocal in their support of JT. I know he said that was only one criteria but I can't help but think perhaps it had more of an emotional impact on him than he is letting on.

vocal support for a player who has missed more cuts the last couple months that he has made. You can like a guy but you have to face the facts, which is that JT is not playing well at all.
Anyone who watches gold knows JT is struggling mightily with his game. It can happen to anyone, and right now JT is in his own head. Maybe some time away will help, but those weekends he had off surely did nothing to help his game.
It is a buddy system without question, and there were a few guys more "deserving" than JT. Tough decisions but this one certainly seems like a reach and could cost the USA,. But a choice was made, let us all hope JT figures it out and can play the golf he is capable of come late September

Nevertheless, Fowler's decision is basically forfeiting a singles match given JT's lack of consistency this past year in order to satisfy a sense of comradery. I agree JT is great in the 4 ball, but that's a big bet to make when every point will count against the European field. I think Bradley, Young, or Lucas would have been a better choice, merited as well.

I'm thinking about who has already qualified for the European team--McIlroy, Hovland, Rahm, and Hatton.

I waa hoping that Lucas would have been chosen too, but I am sure that Zack picked who he thought would give the US the best chance to win. He knows these players a lot better than we do and knows how they mesh as a team. He wants to be a winning coach, so he has zero incentive not to pick the best players. I know Lucas is disappointed, but he knows what is going on and is probably OK with it.

JT has had 3 weeks to get his swing ironed out seeing he didn’t make the playoffs. Wouldn’t surprise me if he did not at least play one of the tourneys before the Ryder Cup to see where he is mentally as far as gaining some confidence. He just needs to see some good rounds and he will be ok.

with Zach’s Picks . . . JT has already said he was competing in the Fortinet Championship @ SILVERADO RESORT (NORTH COURSE) on Sept 14-17 in the Napa Valley . . .
All of Zach’s other choices made sense to me . . . JT earned nothing . . . It was gifted to him . . . and this is what I’ve always disliked most about the Golfing Community and Business as a whole . . . but what I know means nothing to this industry.
