Late subbing is a problem, just like flopping injuries

Bielema exploited the rules to his advantage, just like coaches exploit flopping to their advantage. I don't see an easy solution other than the commissioners and AD's making a pact not to do it. Stankey basically outlawed it this year during SEC games, but dunno how it might be handled in inter-conference games.
It is basically a sportsmanship issue and most players have no regard for that these days.

maybe he'll get the SEC rules spread out to all of college football, especially since late subs and flopping cost one of his teams.

What am I missing? I get flopping slows an offense down when they are in hurry up. Substituting does what. The coots where not running hurry up they were subbing or Illinois would not have been able to. So how was it hurting the coots.

Right. Defenses have the opportunity to bring in new players

after an offense has changed personnel. Defenses are at a natural disadvantage already having to respond to snaps and scripted plays - it's a rule for a reason that they can match personnel last. If an Offense wants to prevent subs then keep your 11 on the field and keep pounding.

It wasn't that the defense subbed, it's that Illinois implemented a revolving door of defensive substitutions once the coot offense opened the door and they wouldn't stop subbing until the play clock ran to zero...and the refs allowed it. And I swear I read Beamer's lips yell F U across the field after the coots scored the TD after all that craziness.

SC was subbing late in the play clock to try to force the defense to substitute a package to match the offense or have to leave what they had on the field. Illinois has seen this on film and this was their answer. Great job of scouting, coaching and execution. I feel like a rule change is coming.

Late subbing by the offense is the problem.

Putting subs in with 15-20 seconds on the playclock. What is the defense supposed to do. The rule is simple, when the offense subs, the defense can counter. Put your subs in with 25-30 seconds on the playclock and there is no problem.
How about this simple rule: The offense cannot substitute with less than 25 seconds on the playclock. When the substitution is made the ball cannot be snapped for the next 15 seconds.

And queue another sissification of the sport coming this offseason.
Someone complied with the rules. Snowflake SEC doesn’t like it. Time to change it.

“Bielema exploited the rules to his advantage”
Yeah, that’s his job as a coach. You think SC wasn’t trying to do the same by subbing late? They got beat at their own game. So play the game better and stop whining.

Huh? Why would an offense intentionally sub late?

That puts them under the gun by the time the defense subs out. Would be dumb to intentionally do that.

No subs on offense after 15 seconds, no subs on defense after 15 more seconds, only one set of subs per team per play.

According to Beamer in his post game presser, the taunting and subsequent tantrum had nothing to do with substitutions. He said it was because the kick returner put his hands out like is normally done to signal touchback and not going to return to. Then he caught the kickoff and passed it laterally to another returner who was also in the end zone. He said Bielema was upset about that and the gesture he was making was in reference to what the returner did before lateraling the ball. The bozo announcers were guessing when they made it all about the substitution issue.

You are 100% correct. I didn’t even know that this was a thing. I did notice that this is an unofficial thing for a player to do but officials do use it as a signal. Pushing the envelope, but not illegal. The same can be said about Illinois taking their time when substituting players.
