I just went back and watched the pick 6

Nov 9, 2022, 10:42 PM

That Dabo said was Ngata’s fault and I still can’t figure out how that’s a perfectly thrown ball. Ngata had just gotten the leverage on the corner to go to the end zone with No safety over the top of him. If DJ throws it toward the end zone that is a TD for us.

I can’t wrap my mind around this. If he was throwing a back shoulder fade on that throw, there is no way it would have gone anywhere but to the corner no matter what Ngata did. I can’t figure this out.

Dabo gets paid to figure it out, you don't.

Would have been a perfect time for a pump fake, and go to the endzone.

One of the things that bothers me with Clemson, and many other teams these days, is the constant looking to the sidelines for plays (and changes). It causes confusion on both sides of the ball. Even with the call coming from coaches, what's the percentage of getting the right play or best defense every time?

Have some faith in the players to execute, but get the call in quickly, and go. Give the QB, or Def signal caller, the option to switch if absolutely necessary.

Shoot, even DJ seemed to play better, more relaxed, when we went hurry up the last 2 drives.

Agreed with everything. I remember when Trevor first started he had a couple of rough series. Then he started pump faking a little and then the cooking began.

Maybe it was supposed to be a quick throw and Ngata wasn’t supposed to go deep. That’s what it looked like to me when the play developed. I knew one of them was on the wrong page because it was a perfect pass to that spot. Just no receiver there. .

I said the same thing when it happened. He threw it exactly where He wanted it. Either He had the wrong play or the receiver. I choose to believe Dabo

All arguments aside, this is what happens when you have an average QB throwing to an average WR.

Smoke and mirrors. Dabo understands he’s got a fragile QB.

ANOTHER 14-pt swing…I forgot the score AFTER the pick-6…

Nov 17, 2022, 10:45 AM

…Did that push it to 28-0?

Else, if Clemson scores, then it would have been 21-7?

Seriously?

It was a back shoulder throw and Ngata ran a
Flag route. Ngata is constantly out of position.

So all of you are saying that the QB is not supposed to look where he throws it? He threw it DIRECTLY to a Cornerback! The best thing that could have happened there was an incompletion.

I would like to know what exactly was called. Was Ngata supposed to only come back for the fade or to go long if he had a step on the DB?

Often the QB is throwing to where the receiver is supposed to be 2 seconds later--passes longer than 20yds--and once the ball is thrown, there's nothing the QB can do to change it. The receiver, though, has that 2s to make some adjustments, time a jump, etc.

Ngata simply does not fight for position on a thrown ball, and is often on a different page than DJ is. Ngata also has average hands, missing quite a few passes that are catchable balls.

Exactly!

Ngata is a MAJOR liability. Out of position, never fights for a ball, never makes the tough catch, misses the easy ones at times too. If he is starting, we must not have anyone better on the bench.

Best to not bring these things up. I just went through this with the Buccaneers fan base. Jameis Winston would have similar throws and the coach would blame the wrs for running the wrong route. You go back and watch there's no way the wr was in the wrong bc he's got a big play if the qb sees the coverage. Well guess what all that talk and blaming the wrs resulted in the wrs still being in tampa and Jameis sent packing. This fanbase reminds me of those years as a Buccaneers fan right now, some are just in complete denial about the QB.

Well if it’s a timing play where the QB is supposed to throw it before the WR makes a break then the only time the QB could throw it is early !
If Dabo says it’s the WR fault it is the WR fault.

Back shoulder pass but receiver kept going. Misread by either DJ or receiver.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You're assuming that DJ can think after the ball is snapped.

Nov 10, 2022, 8:23 AM

That's been a common mistake for nearly two years now. He 'decides,' whether to throw or not. All these plays go well in practice when he's wearing a purple jersey.

We'll see come Saturday if it's the jersey or the young man.

Reads can be based on lots of things including CB position and leverage ….

Nov 10, 2022, 9:04 AM

Safety position, LB blitz etc.

It is pretty much inconceivable Dabo would fabricate this story.

backyard football lens, just throw to the open guy. In reality, most of the throws we see in games are to spots where someone is supposed to be, not where they are currently, or where it looks like they are going. There are pre snap reads which change routes and have to be made by both the QB and WR. There are post snap reads which change routes and have to be made by both the QB and WR. If the QB and WR read a coverage differently, the WR is not going to be where the QB is throwing. Hence, it looks like the QB missed a wide open WR, or threw to a spot nowhere near a WR. That's not to defend the QB, because that misread can just as easily have been on him as the WR. The coaches know who made the error because they can look at the film, see the coverage, and determine what read should have been made. In this case, it sounds like the WR made the error, but again, it could just as easily have been on the QB.

We, as fans, don't know who was at fault most times because we have no idea what the reads are.

Giving a TU, which I'm pretty stingy with. You explained this well, thanks.

"The coaches know who made the error because they can look at the film, see the coverage, and determine what read should have been made." Add to this: and they know the play that was called.

ND Pick Six.png(64.9 K)

Ngata throws his hands up, clearly annoyed where the ball was thrown. He could have easily gone and tackled the guy, but choose the whine about the throw and it's a pick six. The pick isn't on him, but the fact that it was a pick six is.

Right read when thrown

Nov 10, 2022, 10:34 AM

When DJ threw ball, it was the right decision. The CB had leverage over the top. That being said, a throw to the end zone there is probably the safer decision.

Sorry to just respond to this, but the ball is gone by that point. If made the decision at the point in the screenshot, it was the wrong read. When he made the decision to throw, the defender had leverage over the top. No brainer to throw the back shoulder. Ngata ran the route that he wanted to run ignoring timing.

WR coaching/recruiting has been far below standard.***

I’m not qualified to say which one is right or wrong but it has been obvious for the past 2 years that Ngata and DJ are frequently not on the same page. They just don’t seem to have the connection that we have seen recently with our QB/WR combinations.
