Question/Thoughts: 2014 recruiting/Morris

Feb 12, 2013, 4:09 PM

Ok, this is a question that needs to be addressed. We saw the negative impact that the Chad Morris coaching interviews had on the 2013 recruiting class (Tramel Terry, Demarcus Robinson--he started looking around about the time Morris started interviewing). If nothing is done about this, the same could happen in 2014 (Watson, etc.....). So, what should be done? 1)I think Morris should stay at Clemson longer to get more experience (he's only been here for 2 years! he probably isn't really ready anyway. 2)Aside from that though, he needs to be smarter about interviewing--last year he interviewed for jobs, but didn't go anywhere and that cost us 2 recruits potentially. 3) Clemson should go ahead and name Jeff Scott "offensive coordinator in waiting" to establish some continuity/seamless transition. Thoughts??? because if this isn't handled well, it could cost us big time.

Morris has made Watson some pretty big promises.

If this kid signs with us and enrolls early like he is supposed to, we may have Chad for while unless Texas or aTm jobs come up.

either direction. Dabo will make a great hire to give us an elite OC and will still be recruiting the best players in the nation if Morris leaves. No worries here.

Clemson was recruiting good player before Morris and will after. We lost some on the d side of the ball. What about that. Calm down people.

Respectfully disagree

1. Morris has more than enough experience to take over a top-tier program as HC right now. He's ready. He was ready when he was at Tulsa. In fact, we're fortunate he's still our OC and not the HC at somewhere like Texas Tech or Cincinnati. His choice to stay here was because at the moment being OC at Clemson is still his best option. Next year, who knows what opportunities he'll have to consider.

2. This phenomenon of instability happens at every single school that has a high caliber assistant that is a candidate for other schools. We lost recruits to places that are currently stable only because they've got first or second year coaches, which is result of their recent struggles. I'll take our situation right now over theirs anyday. And, remember we stole CJ Spiller away form Florida, but UF still won the national championship that year (not to take anything away from Spiller's time here).

3. Never name an "anything in waiting." That's how FSU gets stuck with a second rate HC like Jimbo Fisher calling the shots, when they could have hired pretty much anyone in the country. I like Jeff Scott, but I don't think he's the best option to replace a guy that hasn't even said he's leaving yet.

4. Morris can interview anywhere he wants and with as much or as little publicity as he wants. Since it is his career, he has to make the choices and take the steps that make sense for him. And he will. Just give thanks that we've got him for now.

i heard the knock on morris this past year was that he did not have enough time in to establish the contacts to put together a good staff.

Do you really think that Morris is the key to the future

Feb 12, 2013, 4:25 PM

of Clemson football and if he leaves we are doomed with nowhere else to turn? Wow, good coaches come and go at every college. Why would Morris not interview for jobs if colleges come calling? They know a lot more whether a coach is ready than posters on Tigernet. People, including coaches, strive to advance in their career and would be stupid to not do so.

Glad that we have but if he decides to leave then so be it. He can be replaced .

Morris' situation had ZERO effect on Robinson.

This is a Clemson offense, not a Chad Morris offense

Feb 12, 2013, 5:08 PM

according to Dabo...

With that said, I'm not too worried. I think Dabo knows what it takes to win.

Our other option could be to hire a lousy OC that no one would want.......including us.

When you hire good people other schools will come calling. Its the path we choose to ake.

lol, you guys are hilarious. coach morris had 2 interviews last year. the one with texas tech was after he had turned them down and a former players dad begged him to at least listen. hundreds of coaches interview every year. hell fsu lost 6 coaches and the still recruited ok. coach morris has let it be known it will take a very special offer to get him to leave. why should we as fans begrudge a man of seeking a program of his own. i hope he stays for years but it is pretty pathetic of our fans to trash a guy for reaching for his dream.

2014 recruiting is the issue...

Feb 12, 2013, 9:54 PM

Watson is committed to Morris. If Morris leaves he will leave. This will cost us several recruits. If we have another good season, which we will, there is a 95% Morris will move. It is a catch 22 right now, you have to take the chance that he stays and go after DW, but we need know whether these guys are committed Clemson or Morris. Dabo needs to have a backup plan as this could to into a down year for recruiting. By down year I mean ranked 25-20. No reason for us not to be in the top 15 every year.
