Resident Georgia fan here

Jul 3, 2022, 3:51 PM

I come to this group from time to time and see how y'all interact with other users so I'm not exactly expecting some intelligent discourse...but I want your honest opinion on why you think the SEC would "roll out the red carpet" for Clemson. From my viewpoint, one of two things have already happened. Either the SEC who's been ahead of the game has already tried to roll the red carpet out and Clemsons leadership was too stubborn to see the writing on the wall months ago...or the SEC hasn't shown interest in Clemson. This is the part where I don't expect logical, non homered responses but...what does clemson bring to the SEC outside of football that the SEC wants? The SEC already has the best product in football and baseball so we're not dying to bring in another great football program. Y'all don't offer a big time basketball program or baseball one at that. Y'all don't offer a new tv market, a huge national fanbase and to be honest who knows what will happen to your football program now that your coordinators are gone and Dabo refuses to change with the times in terms of NIL and transfers. So what would be the draw to bring Clemson into the SEC......and what would be the draw for Clemson to even want to be in the SEC? As one of your users said best.....do y'all really want to play that schedule. Just look at your records against the SEC.

most of those losses weren't in modern times and not under Dabo!

We'll be just fine.

44-16 vs best ever "to be 15 & 0" Alabama team.

Ha...thus the CLEMSON Tigers were 1st ever 15 & 0 college football team in modern history!!

You mentioned that the SEC has eyes in this state via the UofSC. Correct. They are in the 75th ranked media market in the US--stuck in the middle of the state. Clemson is in the Greenville/Spartanburg/Asheville, NC/Anderson media market which is the 35th ranked media market in the US and reaches into both NC and SE Georgia.

FSU has fallen so far I've forgotten about them. Congrats though, they barely made the cut. I was wrong. That's still 2 teams compared to 4. If any team is carrying a conference it's Clemson carrying the ACC. Kudos to y'all.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If you pay attention to Clemson fan culture,

Jul 3, 2022, 4:38 PM

you’ll realize we don’t want congratulations for anything FSU or any other ACC school does.

Clemson is about Clemson, not conference pumping.

You will argue, and rightly so, that for this very reason Clemson stands outside looking in on a dangerous financial precipice, but that is Clemson’s burden to bear right now.

Conference pumping is quintessentially cootish.

Re: If you pay attention to Clemson fan culture,

Jul 3, 2022, 4:59 PM

There's a difference between pulling for a conference like Carolina does so they can brag knowing they couldn't do what the other conference teams have, and acknowledging you're in the best conference. I pulled for y'all against bama, I pulled for every team UT baseball played this year. I hate every team in my conference but I acknowledge collectively we have the best brand.....which turns into the best tv deals....which turns into giving Georgia more money to upgrade and be the best version of itself.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

What happens after you acknowledge the SEC is the best conference?

Jul 3, 2022, 5:55 PM

I’ll answer the question - you play football. Clemson has generally done it better than UGA for a number of years now. Does that warrant acknowledgement as well?

Clemson needs to do there due diligence but doesn’t need to beg. Why wouldn’t the SEC roll out the red carpet for Clemson. They’re head and shoulders ahead of at least 3/4 of the schools in the SEC when it comes to an institution as a whole. In football alone they’d bring more to the conference except for Bama and UGA and those two are ahead due to production (Bama) and larger fan base UGA. Clemson doesn’t need the SEC but the SEC could really use Clemson compared to schools still available to add.

In 2022 academic ranking of USA universities (https://www.usnews.com/best-colleges/rankings/national-universities)Clemson occupies #75 place which is a decent, mid level position. Lower that most fellow ACC members and higher than most SEC schools (Uga is 48, UTexas is 38).
BUT when looked at in comparison to current BiG members that 75 is way,way low.
The new invitees of USC #25 and UCLA #20 show the importance the BiG university Presidents place on academic excellence.
History shows us an invite to Clemson would be a true outlier.

Clemson would become a top 4 SEC school academically. The Clemson-UGA game rating of 8.9 million was the 2nd highest SEC regular season rating (4th overall) next to Bama-Auburn and larger than any of UGA's other games. Football wise and academically, Clemson brings additional pedigree to the SEC no matter how you wish to slice it.

These are the kinda replies I want. I'm all for the UGA/Clemson rivalry being renewed yearly. Love the game, love seeing the hate our fanbases have for each other. I always get a laugh reading posts about Georgia in here. That game would move the needle....but say 5 years down the road when the newness of Clemson in the SEC wore off. What games would move the needle outside of that one and Clemson/Carolina?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I'm married to a Dawg so I'll throw you a bone ...

The recent Clemson/Alabama games have been some of the best games in the last 7-8 years. After the national championship in Tampa even Reese Davis said “forget the playoffs, let’s just have Clemson and Bama play every year.” So I would think Clemson/Bama moves the needle for most folks that are not dog homers.

My take is Clemson-UGA history in modern era had nationwide interest with Herschel, Erk, Junkyard Dogs, great kickers, and great teams in the early 80's. We know Saban is in the sunset of his career at Bama - and between Bear, Stallings and Saban, Bama has not been much. Dabo and Kirby rivalry (and they are young) not to mention the mostly good-natured fan hate and top public school academia has the makings of a good backyard SEC rivalry with nationwide implications.

Hey doggie dog. Jawjaw has a 16-10 record vs the SEC west. 8-2 vs Auburn since divisions so that's just an 8-8 record against the rest of the West. That means your success has been against a very bad SEC weak east division. So what does Clemson bring? We've always heard of an alliance between UF, South Carolina, and Georgia (maybe Kentucky too) that would vote together to block SEC entrance to any of those school's respective in-state rival.

Is that still in effect? A similar position did not help Texas A&M when the longhorns were invited. I would be surprised to hear the SEC has rolled out a red carpet for Clemson.

I'm not sure how much local TV markets will continue to matter. If Clemson, FSU and Miami are available to add any conference should be able to get more money from a TV contract with them included.

I hope Clemson goes to the SEC since it would be easier to visit road games closer to home. The B1G and its money would be better for Clemson than staying in the ACC.

I've always heard there were some teams who had a pact to keep certain teams out but I've never seen proof and from my standpoint I don't see why Georgia would want to keep Clemson out. Richt and Smart both wanted to renew the rivalry with Clemson. Not sure why Georgia would be scared of GT joining the SEC either. I can't speak for other programs but it wouldn't make that much sense to try and keep instate schools out.....outside of GT since they bring nothing to the table, outside of academics lol.

No, SEC charter says approval of invitation must come from 75% of current members, so it will take 12 of 16 to issue invite. No single member has a veto.
If an invite is to be extended to Clemson the vote might include 1 or 2 negatives based on geography and pure politics, but rest assured if Sankey even asks for a vote he will have his 12 based 100% on $$$$ being greater.
I think it happens with Clemson early year pay outs being somewhat reduced to cover SEC paying the GoR cancellation costs.
Disney/ESPN can help make end result economics attractive to all parties, especially their own. They now know college football is a two company contest, ESPN and the coast-to-coast BiG versus ESPN with expanded SEC.

There's a difference between playing one off games against a conference and an entire schedule against a conference. I know here in tigernet y'all believe in recruiting bumps for the SEC, NFL scouts being in on the conspiracy and drafting SEC players higher than they should be. The entire media being in on propping up the sec...but the simple fact is, we are the best conference with the best collective group of players. You can get away with not bringing your A game against 90% of your games in the ACC. Do that in the SEC and you miss the playoffs. You're playing 2-3 national championship level teams in the regular season and one in the conference champ every year just to make the playoffs. No more playing 0 ranked teams until the playoffs like you do in the ACC.

Barkley, you can't be very intelligent yourself because neither Dabo nor Smart or any other coach has anything to do with NIL. There are still 5 months before signing day and we are ahead of you in recruiting so Dabo must be doing something right whether it be NIL or not.

Re: Resident Georgia fan here

If you think universities and the HCs arent involved in NIL you're kidding yourself. Also, Georgia literally does this every year in recruiting...same as bama. Bama was like 80th in the country at this point last year and then we all start landing players late in the cycle. I'm fairly confident we'll be just fine in recruiting, no matter what the rankings in July are lol.

Yes, look at Clemson’s record vs the SEC over the last 10 years. I’m pretty sure we are 3-0 vs Auburn, 2-0 vs TAMU, 2-2 vs Bama, maybe 1-1 vs LSU, and 1-2 vs GA. And still dominating SC at 7-2. I may be off a game or so but that’s 16-7 or something very close to it and more than half of the wins against teams not named SC. Not to mention 3-1 vs Ohio St and 3-1 vs Notre Dame during that time as well. Clemson isn’t worried about being able to compete in the SEC and have proved that over the last 10 years.

Re: Resident Georgia fan here

Jul 3, 2022, 5:12 PM

Any objective opinion must recognize the value that Clemson will bring to any football conference they might join. Sold!
But? Does their addition bring more $$$$$ from any huge new media contract being split among a larger SEC at 16, 18, or 20 members? At evaluating 16, following Texas and Oklahoma, the much larger pie justified the 2 additional teams.
You can be certain that Greg Sankey and the Walt Disney Company are modeling this issue in ways that us laymen could not imagine.
In their ultimate analysis all the "soft" values, brand, academics, alumni base, etc. etc. will have import but the conclusion, thus decision on more members and which ones will be a 10+ year forecast of derived revenue per member, with the extra payouts due additional members a major factor.
The league took in UTex which admittedly has not recently had the on field success of Clemson but, and its a huge but, the brand, exposure and reputational benefit by adding Texas would be much higher that Clemson's, Even A&M at the end recognized adding their in-state blood rival would mean more money and they voted yes.
Will the current 14 reach a similar conclusion on a Clemson invite?
Understand Sankey is no Swofford and whatever his decision it will first and foremost be based not on locking in members forever, but adding additional income immediately.

And guess what, the home team will lime up and pay the commentators too in order to create more open access to more games. As usual there are several very good ones at the top then it falls off in both conferences. The ones below sometimes have decent seasons but aren’t consistently good year in and year out.

I didn’t read your whole post, but think I get the gist of it.

I don’t think most Clemson fans care about joining the SEC, at least until the ACC has run its course. Unlike nearly every SEC program, Clemson has its own identity, and generally doesn’t care about riding the coattails of other programs when they peak (ex: we never really cheered on FSU, like you guys did with Bama).

Maybe it will make sense for Clemson to join the SEC one day—who knows what realignment will bring. But it’s just another athletic conference, not some grand destination. At least, not for us.

Well basically, you are just full of crap and don't understand Clemson and its relationship with the SEC. We have everything you have except maybe the level of cheating. Since you are probably under 30 and living in your parents basement, let me educate you on the long standing relationship with Clemson and Georgia specifically and the SEC in general. When Clemson was compiling the majority of those losses against the SEC, we were either a small military school, by SEC standards, that actually had academic standards for all students, including athletes. I can't tell you how many football players we lost to Georgia and other SEC schools because they simply could not get into Clemson academically ...... many of them from the Clemson /Seneca area as well as Greenville where a number of my friends played for UGA. I would also be willing to bet that the majority of those games we played against the SEC were away games. Once the playing fields were leveled, I think we can say that we have done well against the SEC ...... particularly the best college football team of all times ..... until they played us ..... something like 44-16.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yep… you are correct… once the playing field was leveled

Because insulting people before trying to say you wanna have a conversation with them is always an intelligent thing to do.

Second, you have to realize that every school has dumb fans. Especially young ones. Sure what he posted looks bad when you compare Clemson to the SEC. That’s because Clemson‘s been playing SEC schools for 100 years. Let’s look at Clemson‘s record against the SEC over the last 10 years. Only Alabama has beaten more top 25 teams over the last 10 years. Clemson has beaten more top 25 teams than Georgia has played when you look at the final polls which are the only ones that matter. FYI this is not my opinion this was posted a couple years ago by Saturday’s down south which is an SEC Homer publication.

I don’t give a crap what Clemson‘s record was against SEC teams back in the day. All that matters is today and the future. You think Clemson is scared of Vanderbilt, Kentucky, South Carolina, Mississippi, Arkansas, Florida, Mississippi State, I mean the SEC has a lot of terrible teams. The SEC gets a lot of hype but it would be nothing without Georgia and Alabama.

You don’t need another football school or baseball? Then why did you add Texas? And Clemson baseball is down right now but it will be back.

A lot of Clemson fans don’t want to go to the SEC because y’all suck in soccer and that’s one of the biggest sports in America and we’re kick ### in men’s and women’s soccer.

Have you seen our softball team? I’m sure you wouldn’t like that in the SEC.

We have a pretty fair golf team if you haven’t been paying attention.

Clemson is a natural SEC fit and even Paul Finebum said a few years ago the SEC got the wrong school from South Carolina.

Clearly you have an SEC education. That part is obvious. And you certainly have that SEC arrogance!

The Sankey move to add members or not never even glances at university teams outside of football.
If you join you will soon see his ultimate goal, that will occur in next 5 years, is to totally separate college football from NCAA into a new majors-only enterprise that develops rules, regulation, everything connected with college football. each memberr institution will be free t chart their own course of paying for basketball and Olympic sports.
He has envisioned a whole new universe where history and traditions have little import.
Forward looking and financially aggressive are his M.O. He will overlook all the negatives that are thrown by current rivals.

The conference realignment is all about football. There are going to be two super conferences, the SEC and B1G. The SEC wants Clemson, a top five program, to keep the B1G out of the SEC’s backyard. Can you imagine having OSU, Michigan,USC, UCLA, and Penn State playing in Death Valley? None way does the SEC want that to occur.

No I don’t expect the SEC to roll out the red carpet or come begging Clemson to join. But do I think if they want to compete with the B1G for power they will come offer Clemson? Yes. So will the B1G. ND and Clemson are the only big time players left in regards to TV viewership. We rank in the top ten in viewership per game and that equals money. Also we are a top 10 football program. Yes college football is what is driving all this. They don’t care about any other sport because the money is in “football”.

Mizzou is can't miss TV either. Clemson football adds nothing. Clemson golf and Clemson soccer all are worthless too.

When you compare our history recently against Bama to Georgia's, there is even less reason to join the SEC.

Well, if you think that the SEC has expanded in order to "be the best" from top to bottom and you want to chant "SEC, SEC, SEC" then maybe Clemson isn't necessary.
The fact is that this is all about money - driving contracts and creating media networks. The SEC isn't thinking (IMO) about being an East / West conference. They want to pod the thing into four divisions - all chalk full of excellent football teams that can complete. They want to tell the NCAA to buzz off and die while revamping the playoff system. The SEC with four pods of (say) six teams; each pod champion goes to the eight team NC playoff. Same thing in the BIG ... 48 teams splitting all of that revenue would be a SICK amount of money. Anything like that is going to include Clemson. Clemson is a top player and brand in college football ... they will be involved and they're either going to be in the SEC or somewhere else. I would imagine that the SEC wants them in the conference rather than somewhere else. Clemson is in a cat bird position and won't be in any big hurry or panic to make a deal happen - the deal will come to them and it will be enticing. Of all of the ACC schools (or schools anywhere for that matter), Clemson is sitting in a great place right now. Relative to USC, Clemson is a behemoth in tradition, reputation, prestige and quality of program. The USC thing is a non-issue; who cares? Clemson will bring revenue and lots of it to wherever it goes. Hate Clemson or not, it's true.
