Class of ‘71. Went through “rat season” and glad I did.

My Family Always Especially Remembers 1LT Laura Walker on This Day

While in was in the Army in the 90s her father was my neighbor and boss at Wurburg Germany. He was a Lieutenant Colonel then and I was a lowly Captain in his unit, but her father and his wife were always so giving and good to his men and women in his command.

No American should have to sacrifice a child for this country, yet alone this him and his wife. He retired as a General with other children of his still serving, like his father and grandfather before him. For those who perish it is the end of their life, those who survive them as Gold Star parents and family continue to pay the price for many years after the death. I never forget this family on this day and cannot imagine the mixed visceral feeling of loss and pride these selfless Americans must have on this day, every holiday, birthday and quiet nights of their life.

For us Laura was a typical teenager, she was the babysitter of our first child, became like a big sister for our daughter. On a very small US base in Germany you didn't go a week without seeing her somewhere on the Kaserne. We miss her and her family, they are the true long grey line that has protected this often lost nation regardless of political bias or background. God Rest Your Soul Laura.

Respectfully, Memorial Day is not a “happy” day of celebration. It’s a day of honor and remembrance those who sacrificed for our freedom.

I appreciate that point. I definitely did not mean to be disrespectful and I would not want someone to take it that way!

Thank you. I have edited the subject line accordingly.

Do not forget about the Revolutionary War when our nation won it's independence and friends and neighbors fought each other. Next year, we celebrate the 250th anniversary of our freedoms that were won in the War for Independence and we owe a great debt to our ancestors who fought and sacrificed everything for those freedoms. Visit Cowpens, Kings Mountain or Star Fort and learn the history of how this area was crucial to the the colonists efforts against the British.

"When I was young, I was sure of many things; now there are only two things of which I am sure: one is, that I am a miserable sinner; and the other, that Christ is an all-sufficient Saviour. He is well-taught who learns these two lessons." -John Newton
