p6fuller® At least on my end, the biblegateway previews don't render very well.
You don't have to do anything with this information, it's just FYI.

I'm not of any denomination, but I do like that version of the Bible.
I suppose, in a very general sense, I'm Catholic but not Roman Catholic.

I'm not aware of the difference. I'm curious if you think protestants have it wrong, i.e. they won't be in heaven?

By general Catholic I mean I believe in a universal church. I think there are Christians that come from all different denominations. I think that anyone that has come to the knowledge of God through Christ is part of the universal church, but I'm not Roman Catholic. I don't necessarily follow the Roman Catholic church, although I do like some of what is taught in Catholicism. Just simply a Christian is good enough for me. I don't really follow any particular denomination.

So instead of going to church this morning to practice religion why don’t you go down to the homeless shelter and give all your possessions to the poor like Jesus commanded.

If that is your response to this, you are so bitter, and I feel so sorry for you.

I’m just telling it like it is. Christianity today is an organized religion. Nobody sells all they have and gives to the poor. The early church out all there resources together and nobody was in need. Today churches are for entertainment and to socialize.

You weren't "telling it like it is" with me. You don't know me or what I do or do not do. Your claiming to "tell it like it is", is a judgement that you made up in your own mind about me.
So no, you were not "telling it like it is".

Have you sold all your possessions and given them to the poor?
The disciples left their jobs, homes, and families to follow Jesus.
They didn’t worry about food or clothing.
I’m not judging you personally. I’m just saying Christianity today is a far cry from what it was in the first century. It has evolved into a modern day religion.

I know what you are referring to, which was a specific command to a specific person. There is nowhere in the Bible that says Christians must sell all of their possessions and give it to the poor. So please stop trying to use this as some sort of silly 'gotcha'.

But that seems to be exactly what the disciples and early Christians did.

It would be kind of hard to follow Jesus like the disciples, as Jesus is not physically on the Earth.

Which early Christians sold all their possessions? The Book of Acts described believers "selling possessions" and "parting them to every man who had need." I'm no theologian but far from that being a call to socialism, I think it was an effort to provide for the new Jewish converts, who were ostracized by Jews. When no one would do business with them because of their belief in Jesus - buy from or sell to them - the Christian community provided for them.

In the book of Acts it does say that the early church sold everything and brought the money together and divided it.
Acts 2:44-46-"Now all who believed were together, and had all things in common, and sold their possessions and goods, and divided them among all, as anyone had need."
When I was a believer and first started reading the bible for myself it just shocked me at the differences in what early christianity focused on vs. what the modern day church focuses on.
Jesus and the early church were first and foremost about taking care of the poor. The verse the OP posted supports that. Jesus even says that's the difference between heaven and hell...
“When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.
Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’
Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’
The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’
Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’
They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’
He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’
Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”

You do understand that there are a ton of Christian based organizations that heed this calling, right?
