Realignment

Jun 30, 2022, 4:32 PM

The news that UCLA and USC are moving to the Big Ten (or B1G) is exciting, but it's just the first of many moves that will happen. And some of this stuff will happen quick.

Had one source text me and tell me that UCLA and USC were a "done deal" and then another that said Clemson and Notre Dame would follow suit. I know a lot of Clemson fans just assume that if there was a conference change, it would be to the SEC. But the SEC has a South Carolina team and there are so many different layers other than football - like Olympic sports and even academics. And from that standpoint, Clemson would fall more in line with the B1G move. However, Clemson is not a part of the AAU (both UCLA and USC are), and people have said that if and when the B1G expands, they want AAU schools (Nebraska is currently the only conference member not an AAU school).

So, there is a lot of stuff to look at. A lot to consider. And I would think Clemson to B1G before the SEC, just because of things I've heard. But things are changing - fast - and I don't believe Clemson will be left behind. But where and when? All remains to be seen.

If you have a question, keep in mind we are moving today and tomorrow and I am mostly away from the laptop. But I will get to the questions when I can. Right now? No sources from Clemson are saying anything, and I am not sure there is anything they COULD say. But a lot of national people who have contacts across the country are buzzing.

I hope and pray we do not go to the B1G...

Geez....from a financial standpoint that would be a windfall but i would absolutely hate those weekly matchups. I guess the opportunity to beat Michigan and OSU regularly would be great.
If Clemson is hitching it's wagon to the BB heads, how are they going to circumvent the GOR? ND certainly doesn't have to worry about that. I always assumed FSU and Clemson would be partnered up in leaving the ACC. It's a crazy realignment world out there right now!

Re: Have to make a move at this point

Jul 1, 2022, 1:25 AM

If Clemson and FSU go to the BigTen, then it is off to the races.

Stanford, Oregon, and Washington all sign on for the Big10 move because they all are in huge markets and are academic/athletic fits.

A bidding war erupts over Miami and UNC. The SEC eventually brings the most cash.

Super-conference mania is on!

Cal, Colorado, and Utah to the BigTen.
Virginia Tech to SEC and Virginia to BigTen.
ASU to SEC and U of A to Big 10.
Duke surprisingly goes SEC!

During the carnage UCF, Cincinnati, BYU, GT, Louisville, Oregon State, and Washington State to the Big 12.

BC, Syracuse, and Pitt end up in BigTen.

NC State and Wake go to the AAC in shame.

Notre Dame stays independent.

GT declares they are now independent, but no one cares.

I don't see any scenario where pretty much the entire East Coast of the US doesn't have a viable and attractive football, basketball, or pretty much all-sports league. What a crappy deal for fans these leagues are cooking up.

Poach WVU, get ND on board (they may not have scheduling opps ahead if they sit this one out), and move on.

The biggest winner in all this may wind up being SCar. With 10 league games on their horizon they can finally cancel their annual series with us and save the annual humiliation.

Re: Realignment

Jun 30, 2022, 5:15 PM

It will happen...whether it's the SEC or Big10, this is all about the destruction of the old guard - just like we're seeing with our Gov't now and the slow, orchestrated and systematic destruction of the old guard (left wing fascist cabal). The same with the corrupt PGA, and in this instance the corrupt NCAA...create a couple super conferences and they can make their own rules and tell the NCAA to finally pound sand.

This is The Great Awakening, we're going through the deprogramming phase right now as the sheep are too programmed and brainwashed to learn the truth abruptly; hence the slow dribble of truth coming out. But it's coming on all fronts.

Watch and see.

To that point, we'll see if it's the Big10 or SEC but my undestanding is that the old thought process of the SEC not wanting more than one school in a state (have USuC don't need Clemson) is not the case, they want the entire South.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Realignment

That's what I was thinking. It would be a real power move for the B1G to bring in a couple of schools in SEC territory. Would send a message if you ask me. Plus new rivalries would definitely spawn between the two conferences....this would almost guarantee at least one win a year against the sec haha.

I think the ACC will either go all in at a big name what's left out there and make things happen or get dissolved. This thing is moving fast and I hope Clemson is smart enough to jump ship before it sinks. But it's obvious today's news has been brewing for a while and there's more to come. The NCAA will be over.

Jun 30, 2022, 8:15 PM

Clemson going to the B1G would hurt recruiting because families of players in the southeast wouldn't be able to see their sons play as much. Remember what happened when there was all of that Clemson & FSU to the Big 12 talk? Recruits didn't like it and Dabo had to assure them that it wasn't going to happen.

Clemson going to the SEC would be a geographic fit, if it came down to those two mega-conferences in the future.

Jul 1, 2022, 8:45 AM

I read all of the conference realignment news last night and had to think about it for awhile. For some reason, this time feels different. I cannot believe that I am writing this but, I do not envision Clemson staying with the ACC. From a travel standpoint, I want the SEC. But I have to admit, the B1G would be intriguing and adding Clemson seems like the correct move for them. I sure am glad that I am not Neff right now. The poor guy is earning his paycheck with all of this. Clemson just needs to figure out a way to get out of paying all of the ACC exit fee because that is a LOT of money.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Realignment

Jul 1, 2022, 8:55 AM

$52 million used to be a lot of money. With our gap in conference revenue, it would be made up in 2-3 years in either the B10 or SEC

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

GOR means our $ stays with the conference

Jul 1, 2022, 11:03 AM

It’s close to 1/2 billion if we exit today. That actually may be the low side. Depending on how GOR is written, it may(likely) mean the new value of rights from the new conference until 2036 which could be over a billion joining one of the SEC or BIG. Essentially GOR means you have to self fund your whole program for the duration of the contract. You either have to find a loophole - good luck- or perhaps the majority of teams or whatever the # is to disband the league. I imagine the other teams not wanting to leave would still have a case for $100millions in damages.

Re: Realignment

Jul 1, 2022, 9:40 AM

Do you think there is any chance ND joins the ACC? All of their traditional rivals are not in the big 10. If not, ACC is kind of sunk. Like one post said, this time feels really different than the last realignment. I just don't see us being in the ACC for much longer.

I hope it's the SEC over the big tho.

Re: Realignment

Jul 1, 2022, 1:52 PM

Objectively, Clemson would be a great fit for the B1G. They gain a beachhead in the south for recruiting. They become the truly national superconference. We have a great brand and we have strong academics (and research levels that match many AAU schools).

Whether the B1G is the best fit for Clemson is a more difficult question.
