Question for those that drive to and from on holidays.

Thinking about driving 7 hrs on I95 from SC to Cape Canaveral for a cruise on Labor Day weekend. Boat leaves on Sun 5/24 so thinking about driving down Sat 5/23 and spending the night in a motel. One of the group thinks we ought to take the cruise at a later date that doesn't occur on a holiday weekend. I think driving won't be too bad during the day on Saturday. What are your opinions?

I lived in central FL for 24 years. Holiday traffic on 95 is awful. Good luck.

Add 3-5 hours to that drive time
If you’re lucky

My wife just drove my daughter to Orlando for a camp. From Liberty, SC it said drive time should be 8.5 hours.
Took her 10 hours and she was happy. You have to tackle I95 though Savannah and Jacksonville.
The expected drive time is NEVER correct

I95 and I85 are both tertible, no matter when you drive it. In fact, every interstate on the east coast and southern states now is a nightmare . Traveled them all for 15 years in a 38 foot motor home and it was bad 15 years ago. Today, I don't even like driving a car on any of them.

If you are leaving in May for a Labor Day cruise you should have enough time to get there.

There I’ll be more traffic headed north out of Florida than south at that time of year. Any weekend those roads will be very busy. I would go Saturday just in case you run into a major delay. Waiting until Sunday creates the possibility of literally missing the boat.

I did it once on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Plan on finding every rest stop and fast food bathroom out of toilet paper with overflowing trash cans and water all over the floor. Plan on 9-11 hrs instead of 7.

That’s the absolute worst time of year to go. When we lived in South Florida it was widely known and very obvious the snowbird season ran from Thanksgiving to Easter. That was quite a few years ago but I’m sure it’s still just as bad or worse.

I drove to Orangeburg from the NC foothills yesterday. 5 miles N of Columbia I-77 went from 75/80 to dead stopped in a blink, bumper to bumper. Heard crunching metal behind me and saw one take to the grass with a mangled front. I can't imagine what the carnage would have been if 99% of the cars today didn't have ABS. Am still thankful Orangeburg is W of I-95. DON'T DO IT ON A HOLIDAY!!!

If you are in the upstate area cut through Augusta and come out near Savanna on 95. It adds 30min or less driving time but will bypass a lot of 95 traffic . I do it every time we go that way and the drive is nice .

I did that on the way home last time I was in Florida. You are right it adds a little time, but the time to drive that route is much more consistent. The interstates can, and usually do, add and hour or more in the blink of an eye.

You could always take the old school route down US 1 through Georgia and get over on A1A in Jacksonville, if you are leaving from the upstate. " I have taken the road less traveled by and that has made all the difference." - Robert Frost

Be careful on 95 in southern GA, they will have the speeders lined up. Once you get past Jacksonville, it is 90mph all the way down.

try to stay in Merit Island if you can, it is gorgeous. You can get an air b and b on a sailboat anchored in the causeway.

Terrible time for a cruise. Go when it's cold so you can enjoy some warm weather.
If you have to go over a holiday plan on leaving the day before and staying in a motel. Good luck to you.
