Question for anglers...

Question for the anglers on the board...where are some good spots to fish without a boat, kayak, canoe, etc? My 19 yr old and I like to try and fish when we can. A lot of times it’s just him because he has more free time than I do. Anyway, we don’t have any type of watercraft so we have to bank fish, pier fish, etc. We've tried Saluda lake, Paris Mt. state park, and a few others with no success. Friend of ours just told us about Twelve Mile park. Is that a good spot to try? We’re in the Easley/Powdersville area. He spends time in Clemson with his buddies, I think one of them likes to fish but he isn't too familiar with any areas either. He’ll be heading back to school locally in the fall so hopefully we can get a few trips in before then. Any suggestions appreciated.

that people who fish off the bank cast as far out towards the middle as they can and people fishing from a boat cast as close to the shore as they can?

Fish a few rods with cut bait or earthworms on the bottom. Don't be stingy with the bait. Catfish will bite most times.

Find an old farm pond and ask permission to fish it. Lot of big bass in those ponds out there.

Not a farm pond but a nice little spot between a school and a golf course. He caught this yesterday AM.

Wish I could help, but I am a saltwater angler and know next to nothing about that freshwater stuff.

Hot as it is, I would head up towards the mountains/hills and drift a cricket through some holes while standing/swimming in the cold water. I have only fished the Chattooga, Chauga, East Fork up around the fish hatchery, Whitewater, Eastatoe, and a few other small ones in that area. There are some maybe a little closer to you on upper Saluda drainage. Hwy 78 above Long Creek right around the bridge is easy and always took my son there when he was small. Always caught some decent fish.

Otherwise throw a worm in the lake and go for a catfish. Trout are better eating IMO.

I live in Mississippi so I don't know if this applies to SC. Landowners with ponds often sell annual fishing leases as a source of eco-dollars. What is included - (e.g., like open access, john boat, dock, fish cleaning place, etc). is up to you and the land owner. I have ponds and would charge $500 - $1,000 annually (john boat, boat house & dock, unlimited fishing, no license required because it's private property), but don't want the bother. You can advertise in one of the Facebook market sites for your area. The down side is the cost, but the upside is the fishing is usually good, it's usually secure, not often crowded, and the clientele are/become friends. A lot of people use fishing leases so there must be something to it. Mississippi also has a number of fishing clubs where a group obtains a fishing lease.

Just some thoughts for you. Hope it works out.
