Question about "Five Finger shoes"
Apr 28, 2012, 11:47 PM

The past few months I've completely went from weight lifting to cardio only, I've heard good things about the five finger shoes, not just for running, but overall. Anyone got any advice about them? I'm thinking about aquiring a pair.

Not for the shoes, but for you.
Just like lifting, you can't do something new and expect to not get sore. With running, b/c it's sport that overuse injury is very easy to do, switching out of a standard running shoe with midsole heights of 24mm in the heel and 12mm in the forefoot to a shoe with 4mm & 4mm, it's very easy to get injured.
As a step in that direction, I would maybe look at the NB Minimus Trail (works great for running and lifting) since there is a little more protection.
If you decide to go with Vibram though, go with their most protective model and is best for lifting and side to side motion, the Komodo Sport.

Cool thanks a lot. I've been using the new Reebok running shoes that came out a few months ago, they work really well, very lightweight.

Vibram also makes the soles for the Merrel barefoot shoes. They don't have the toes, but like the NB minimus, the are great for trail running and real comfortable.
Merrel does offer a pair that is for road running as well. But like others have said, most of these barefoot shoes are not good for road running. The Merrel barefoot road ones might be a decent compromise though.

runner. That's what I use. But beware ... do not start off with barefoot shoes running a mile or more at a time. That's what I did and developed a painful neuroma on my right foot that required surgery to remove. I was stupid. I should have been more patient. If anything, barefoot runners teach you proper running form, and that is to run using your forward portion of your foot. Running with a heal strike first is way wrong.
I love my Merril's. They are outstanding and the Vibram sole is as solid as a tire tread.

I have a couple friends with them, and first time I saw them that's what I thought, but I'll take the chance of looking like a moron as long the shoes help.

Don't try to run on hard surfaces. No support in those things = shin splints very quickly.

You'll need to alter your running mechanics. Our strides are accustomed to a heel first strike, and it's a hard habit to break. If you keep the same form and switch to barefoot style shoes, you're gonna have a bad time

Nikes but got IT Band Syndrome so my physical therapist advised me to get a pair of Brooks that focused on stability.
Helped out tremendously, I've owned three pairs of Brooks and they work great but may cost a little more.
