Everyone is hard wired to addiction to some chemical. Those who haven’t tried may never realize what drug it is. Genetics show this is true for 100% of people. Your drug might be crack. Genetics loads the gun and the environment pulls the trigger. I know because I’ve been studying this the last 6.5 years into a doctorate.

I have lost loved ones to addiction as well. It has hit me so hard that I focused on a new psychology degree at 49. I have started my PsyD (psychiatry plus medical doctor) program and look to be practicing addiction therapy medicine in a few years (PsyD program=5.1 years). I plan to spend my last twenty years trying to help one person at a time learn that life after addiction is possible.

You never know what someone is going through. Sorry for your loss.
Hopefully we can come to a point where we stop brushing off addiction as a choice and develop programs where people can readily get the treatment they need along with society not casting unwarranted judgement.

So sorry for your loss. I lost my brother to alcohol and my parents to cigarettes, all between 1989 and 1998. I still get mad at them sometimes. But mostly just miss them.
