Power Failure in Clemson
May 11, 2019, 5:12 PM
|
|
I had just finished breakfast and was reading the morning paper when "El Kabongo", the power went off. We were informed he power would be back on about 12:30 PM and then later the time was about 2:30 and then about 5:30. Well, it came back on at 4:30. Here I'm sitting around waiting for power because when the power is off we soon realize everything shuts down. No cooking, no reading, no AC, no TV, no internet, and can't even wash dirty clothes or dishes. If I wanted or needed to go to the store or anywhere, I'd have to disconnect the garage door opener to get the car out.
What ever happened to the good old days when we didn't have electricity, running water, automobiles, the internet, frozen foods and all of that stuff?

How come folks don't mention all the monstrous ways people used to suffer and die back in the "good ole days"?

In my younger years, there was only one thing to do when the power went out ! Today, not so much.

Get yourself a Generac generator! Mine uses natural gas, and I never even know when the power goes off or comes back on - completely automatic

Neighbor put in a whole house General generator. Hurricane Matthew knocked the power out for a week. He looks like a genius. They went on living like any other day. Running heat pumps, washing clothes. Then the $800 gas bill came in. Turns out it’s wicked expensive to make your own electricity. They are nice to have but you really want to know when it turns on.

Those good ole days ended when I had to walk in the rain for a mile+ with holes in my shoes and just a hat to keep the rain off my head. There was electricity available, but being dirt-poor, our electricity was often turned off, along with the phone, and lack of heating sources (coal, kerosene, etc).
The good ole days began when I was old enough to work my tail off and actually buy some clothes that were cheap, but decent enough not to suffer from ridicule. Being retired, and 3 successful college-grad kids, is the result of hard work and sacrifice. That CLEMSON degree is a special thing, so take special pride when you receive it.
