Piggybacking off the "concerts" post from earlier about

May 16, 2022, 11:50 AM

missed concerts at Clemson. Later on in life, who have you seen in concert, at ANY venue, that surprised you in a GOOD way?

I have two acts. One was John Fogerty. Saw him just a couple of years ago, in Augusta. The tickets were not exorbitantly priced, like some of these aging "stars" seem to do. I went to the show without a whole lot of expectations, because, lets face it, Fogerty is as old as ME. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that he can still "Shred the 'Gnar" with the best of them. A great show, start to finish.

The second one, which I didn't even BUY the tickets for, was Elton John, also in Augusta. I was gifted the tickets by my older brother, who had had a recurrence of the cancer that would ultimately take his life away. I offered to pay for the tickets, but he wouldn't hear of it.

I was a "casual" Elton fan, but the ticket prices were steeper than I would have bought on my own at the time. Bro had bought two FLOOR tickets, the most expensive ones! I believe this tour was along about the same time that Sir Elton did the now famous "Elton 60" Madison Square Garden show that he put out on DVD. (It is superb, by the way. I now own it, and highly recommend it! It is worth the price just for the performance of "Empty Garden", amongst other, more well known treasures.)

As I said, I was gifted the tickets, almost last minute, so I had NO expectations of what kind of show he was still capable of putting on at the time. And, sure enough, there were some high notes he didn't even try to hit, but in the end, you didn't care. Because, I will tell you one thing. That old man can still KILL IT playing the pian-ey! At his age, and given how long he has been doing it, pretty amazing just from a medical standpoint that his fingers are still fluid enough to "Tickle the Ivories" like he does. I went from just being a "casual" fan, to being in complete awe of the mans talent.

Concert goers out there, give me your "best" experiences.

Audio of the entire show. A friend called me the night before with two tickets.

Cootlumbia, but they backed out due to concerns about hurting the grass in the stadium? Or maybe I am thinking about an earlier Stones tour.

I know it wasn't originally on the schedule--slightly remember something about the Roach.

I've never found a full recording of it until today. The Spanish speaker is only at the beginning.

I saw the Stones in Charlotte on the "Bridges to Babylon"

May 16, 2022, 6:00 PM

Tour. The only real good thing about it was the two giant dolls moving to the music. The Stones pretty much just mailed it in that night. That was in what back then was known as Eriksson Stadium (Bank of America today).

In contrast, the very next weekend, I saw The Who at what was then called Blockbuster Pavilion in Concord, NC. They played Quadrophenia from start to finish, and then finished up with several of their actual "hits". They played GREAT, all night. Even Roger Daltry was in good "voice" form that night. It was a balmy night with a slight breeze, perfect for a semi-outdoor concert. Sometimes you get lucky.

Speaking of luck, I didn't know it at the time, but I got to see ZZ Top on one of the last round of shows before Dusty Hill passed away, their 50th Anniversary Tour. This was in Augusta, Ga, and the OPENING ACT for them was....CHEAP TRICK! Didn't need my hearing aids that night, both those bands only had one volume, ELEBEN on a scale of TEN.

Billy Gibbons opened with the line, "Fifty Years, Same Three Guys, Same Two Chords!" Aside from the terminal loudness, both Cheap Trick and ZZ Top still play great.

I had ZZ Top tickets for their show in Greenville last year,

May 17, 2022, 7:09 AM

which was canceled because it was the day after Dusty died. But I did see them way back in 1976.

We saw Aerosmith in Ohio when we lived there in about 2003 or 2004. Outdoor arena - I had high expectations and wasn’t disappointed. But the surprise was the opening act. Some guy named Kid Rock that we hav never heard of. We arrived after he had started so we only heard about half his set but he was really good and we ended up regretting that we didn’t get there at the start. Of course, after that he became a lot more popular and we heard more of his stuff but that night he was a pleasant surprise.

This is one of Kid Rock’s airplanes. I was told his better, newer plane is a G-sting.

It’s an unusual paint job and you immediately notice it. It’s much more obvious with the naked eye.

Elton John had three great albums:

May 16, 2022, 12:10 PM

Tumbleweed Connection in 1970, Madman Across the Water in 1971, and Honky Chateau in 1972. The next two Don't Shoot Me I'm Only the Piano Player and Goodbye Yellow Brick Road were solid but not as good as the other 3.

Everything after these 5 albums was complete crap.

I saw Elton John and Billy Joel in the Piano Man tour in Death Valley. 3rd row center stage. Elton John was completely boring. Billy Joel absolutely stole the show.
I really was hoping for more from Elton John.

Someone gifted me tickets to see Chicago several weeks ago

May 16, 2022, 12:13 PM

While I realize it's largely a Chicago cover band these days (I think three of the original members remain), I was pleasantly surprised. It was actually a really good show.

A little known bit of trivia. After Kath accidently shot and killed himself, the group seriously considered disbanding.

It was Doc Severinsen, musical director of the Tonight Show band, who persuaded them to keep performing.

Best experience is Pink Floyd and any Dead show. Most recent was Marcus King in Greenville back to back nights last year. Also caught Dead & Co back to back in CLT and ATL. That ATL show was rough. Getting old. Lol. Have Dave Matthews coming up this week the Billy Strings, Dead & Co in VA and Phish next couple months. Hoping Dead do a fall fun and hot CLT and ATL.

the two double album sets they came out with back in the day as "greatest hits" kind of things. Although, I am SURE I would be "mellowed" into enjoying any live Dead show, unless it was outside with a stiff breeze blowing

Godsmack, Robert plant and the fabulous space shifters

May 16, 2022, 12:40 PM

I expected Godsmack to be just a decent hard rock show but they were actually fantastic live with great musicianship, far more hits than I remembered… And fantastic drum duet.

Robert Plant and the fabulous Space shifters… Or far better than I expected. He covered some old zeppelin but did it in a way that he could still manage at his age. He doesn’t have the pipes he did but he was still a consummate performer and quite mesmerizing

Saw many concerts as I worked security.
A cashier would go the booths a few times a night and collect the money. I would make sure no one grabbed the bag. An amazing amount of money is spent.
Fun tangent is at Hornet games, beer was the top seller. At concerts, memorabilia was.

Two great ones I saw that come to mind are Meatloaf and Charlotte Church.

Like you I wasn't expecting much, thinking he may need to sit and sing with a weaker voice and smaller band.

But the man sounded as well as he did in his 20's and put on a good show.

I've been to several concerts trust me. To your original question as far as surprises recently, opening acts Cheap Trick, Grand Funk and Zac Brown. All time Molly Hatchet with Danny Joe Brown opening for AC/DC. They all blew the roof off the joints

Zac Brown Band

At the Bilo Center. My mom wanted to go to the show so I bought her tickets as a present. I’ve always enjoyed his music but never thought he would be as good of a live performer as he was. His concert was all hits and also included a bunch of classic rock covers like Allman brother and Van Morrison. It was a great show.

Aerosmith in the original Charlotte Coliseum
Saw the first 45 mins of Cheap Trick at ECU. I’ll skip the incriminating details, but we spent about an hour and a half laying down in the parking lot…..cuz that was the best we could do.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

May 17, 2022, 7:22 AM

a few truly great ones in recent years...Joe Bonamassa in February 2020, in of all places, the Township in Cootville...it was a fabulous show...helped by the fact that my date was the hottest 65 yr old I've ever seen, who is a huge fan of Joe B...that was a great night!

The Avett Brothers at James Brown Arena in Augusta, in 2019. They put on a great concert! If you aren't familiar with them, check em out on YouTube...they're from Concord, NC...been around for 20 plus years. They've won Grammys, but maybe not as well known as they should be!

I go to several shows a year at the Newberry Opera House...a great little venue that seats about 450. About five years ago, I saw Paul Thorn there, and his show was absolutely fabulous...one of the best I've ever seen anywhere!
