Paying to watch.....certainly NOT just a player!

Someone posted earlier about NIL and players being the "product" that is making all the money for the schools.

That is BS. Has ANYONE specifically went to a Clemson game to watch a player? Did anyone decide they would drive to watch an FSU game because we lost out on a Geno Haynes? How about Herschel Walker? Anyone head to Athens on a Saturday to watch him run the ball for the Dawgs? Heck no! We go to cheer on the Tigers.....NO MATTER who is playing for the team! Fans "paying" to watch the players....bologna! CFB fans pay money for the SCHOOL/Team...the Tigers, the Longhorns, Seminoles...whatever mascot or name is on the FRONT of the jersey...NOT the back!

Humility seems at an all-time low....just like critical thinking skills.

Go Tigers!!!

Yeah I watch for the players and the product on the field. I like watching good teams. The school and it's history are equally as important, but without the quality players I won't bother to watch. I will tune in to random games if I know they are stacked with talent. I used to watch San Diego State University just to watch Marshal Faulk. I would watch VTech just for Michael Vick.

Ok, I can agree with watching a game on TV for those players. Because I did as well. Are you tuning in to watch SDST w/Faulk over the Tigers game playing at the same time?

What I was getting at is would someone actually go to a game of another school when Clemson (or, whoever their team/school is) is NOT playing against said player's school?

For instance, Clemson playing against some team at home (or away), while another team with a player Clemson lost out on in recruiting....Are you going to the other team's game? Are you now a fan of that new school and will buy all the gear because of that one player?

I bet not.

The NIL stuff...yea, pay the players from the video games and from merchandise sales for their items.....advertising and such.

If Clemson is stacked or even talented I will look forward to watching and make it a priority. If they sucked I would probably find something else to do if possible. I would only tune in as a last option.

To each their own. I've flown from Okinawa with a main purpose to go to a Clemson game with my Dad and family....drove from Oklahoma...Texas...just for the reason to be with my Dad in Death Valley and watch the Tigers play.

Cheer them on to win, but if the team isn't that good....didn't matter. I would still go.

Go Tigers!!!

I am like most fans who watch sports. The players are enormous. At this stage they are what keeps things working. The system was set up and put in place, but that part is old news. Now it's about the players. I am looking forward to next season to see our players I am excited to see. Cade, that frosh RB, Wesco, Moore, Antonio Williams, Sammy Brown, TJ Parker and many more. The players make it at this stage. The history is already in place as far as team name recognition. It's about excitement and putting on a show.

I am excited for next season as well! But, am for all Clemson football seasons.

So, specific question since you brought up Cade and other great/exciting players. If Cade transferred and Vizzina(?, nothing against the kid at all!) was the starting QB.....are you changing the # times you go to a Clemson game? Do you still attend/tune-in? Or, are you now following wherever CK2 possibly went?

I would want see how Vizzina would do. I believe in him. If we had 4 walk-ons replace Cade, Antonio Williams, Wesco, and Moore, I wouldn't make the game a priority. I would know that we aren't the type of team that would do much for the season and wouldn't do much as far as the big picture. I would probably just concentrate on recruiting and how we were going to fix the problem.

I am a fan and I am an alumni and know the team 3 deep generally. At the end of the day it is entertainment though to watch sports. I need to be entertained. I don't owe it to anyone to watch if the product was awful. Luckily, Clemson has been entertaining for years and there is always someone, whether it was CJ Spiller or Ron Gardner,or Justin Miller with his returns for TD's etc etc. We don't have to win the ACC or win it all for it to be entertaining. The right players make it entertaining and worth watching. They make it a viable option for entertainment. On a perfect beautiful day there are a lot of options. Right now Clemson is the best option when playing and has been for years upon years.

That’s a crazy argument, look at the average price of Clemson tickets against the national average ticket price. When we are better they cost more, because people pay more to watch better teams and better teams have better players.

Welcome to the late stage capitalism party, this is what it looks like.

There have been games at Clemson that I made sure I didn't miss because players but I wouldn't have traveled to see that same player at a different school. Players I quickly remember is Deion Sanders, Matt Ryan, P Rivers, TCU Dalton and I an sure there are others, but most of those were can't miss Clemson games as well.

I do not think it should be the SCHOOLS paying....and it is the "Wild West" right now.

Btw-- plz ignore the political title. I think this article makes a lot of good points irregardless

You want to over-regulate what should be a free market because you don’t like who is winning? Sounds like commie thinking to me.

Strange to me to see folks attributing market deregulation to Liberal ideology.

If you want a free market, then the highest bidder wins. That reduces competition and parity, makes it more unfair for most teams and reduces the uncertainty and therefore increases the likelihood of a result. The end product will be the same 4-6 teams with a shot at winning year after year and the rest of the programs will just shut down because they cannot keep up and revenues will fall. With TITLE IX tied to their throats, many universities will have to abandon their athletic departments. Great result. I am all for a free market system...but this one is not going to work the way things are currently set up.

There’s a flaw in your logic. NCAA is a transient league. PT is more valuable from a career earnings standpoint than NIL money. So, instead of the highest bidder winning, it’s a combination of bidder and opportunity which is creating more parity.

I would predict the quality of the average team outside of the top 30 is going to get worse and the quality of the average team inside the top 30 is going to get better as NIL progresses barring some significant changes to transfer rules.

I think NIL has overall improved the league, but not without negatively impacting some aspects of it. Some regulation to the Portal would go a long way in keeping the parity up while also improving coaches abilities to manage rosters.

The bottom line is this:
If you have good/great players you have a really good chance to have a good team.

If you have great/good players AND good/great coaches you have a chance to be a great team.

Getting the best players is paramount to winning games/championships.

The greatest players demand the most money

That being said, we all are watching games because of the players.

NFL development league long ago. They would have pulled all the best 18-22 year old
Players and made a fortune.

If it were about the players then Trevor Lawrence could have NOT played college ball and just signed a NIL deal with Nike. His name doesn’t have to be associated with a college team to make money (sorry, obviously an older example but I don’t really know who equates to him now).

But no one ever formed a league because it didn’t have a passionate fan base who loved their team and would show up win or lose (yes, less when we still had over 68k on average in 1998…when we finished tied for last in the ACC).

On the margins, the players can have an impact. A few thousand fans. But mostly it’s about the school…the decades of brand development and loyalty they have cultivated with their communities to connect them with the team.
