I made a decent living doing part time work as my main job could not support us. I had more offers than I could show up for, so kinda blessed as to that. Often went from part time job to part time job and might not make it home to my bed everyday, would grab a nap in the used Southern Bell van I bought for $600.
Folks seem to be different these days and demand 30 hour weeks.
Post if you had/have an additional job.

People bust their butts as much if not more than ever. The cost of living is high to top it all off.

One part time job I had was showing up at Midnight in blue jeans at the Charlotte Greyhound bus station. Perverts and thieves would show to prey on the passengers. I still have scares from that, but it paid well.

A couple of rolls of quarters taped up with friction tape worked wonders on the bridge of the nose and the adam's apple. Just saying you know.

had several part time jobs myself to supplement income. There were times in people's lives where 2 to 3 jobs were still not enough. But through it all you just wanted an honest day's pay for an honest day's work to provide for family and continue to hold your head high.
I tell young people today if you don't have a plan to get an education or a trade then join the military. Free housing, free food, free healthcare. I don't know any other job you can retire in 20 years. in the civilian workforce you will have to work 50+ years to retire and that's a gamble sometimes.
I wish someone would have told me but that's water under the bridge. I did the 50+ years and was truly blessed to make it.

like Afghanistan where you may or may not shoot at people and get shot at.
I thought about the military, ROTC, etc. back in the 80s. Looking back, I probably would have been in Desert Storm in early 1991 since I was 29 when we were over there for a couple of months. But like you said, I could have a pension and two incomes with 20 years and survival.
The flip side is I knew I guy at an old job who lost his son overseas in the military. Their family was devestated. War is he!! on the homefront too.

Been there and done that. When I started out in 64 my full time job with MA Bell paid me $90 after taxes every 2 weeks, yes $49.50 a week. My second job was with an electrician wiring houses. He would pick me up when I got off job one and we would work most weeknights to at least 12. We would work long days most every Saturday and Sunday. When his work slowed down mainly on the weekend I worked at a place like a quick stop. I had to carry a picture to remember what my wife and baby looked like. She never failed to have something for me to eat no matter the time I got home and a lunch packed the next morning.
I do not regret one minute of those days it made a better man out of me.

Did you stay with MaBell? I’m from a MaBell family and was blessed to retire from there. My Daddy told me ; as he began to pull in$100. a month, his GrandMa couldn’t believe it. Told him he better be saving some of that. Later, as he moved up a bit, he and mama( they met at Southern Bell) had a $98 month house payment and things were tight!! MA Bell those were the days. It was a good job long term, not the highest paying but a job you could make a career out of if you did your job and kept your nose clean. A veteran pulled me aside one day and told me this job is yours as long you don't violate the three C's. I asked him what he was talking about? He said don't ever steal no copper, don't ever steal no company cash and don't ever mess with c##t on the job.

I was blessed with the world's best kid. He required heart operations my insurance did not cover. No matter as he got the best available. America is a great place. I had debt no one could ever cover. No matter, just had to make the payments so he got the best.
I was blessed.

But after all these years, it's less about the bottom line and more about staying sharp.
And while the Lord has blessed us immensely and money is not a problem at the moment, there have been plenty of lean times, too.
I've worked the deli counter at Publix, sold appliances at Best Buy, Lyft driver, vacation rental repairman ... all to make ends meet.
And those have been some of our happiest times.

I once taught a night class at Erskine- found out quickly that I could never do that full time because I hated giving grades that would affect another person’s future. Also worked some Saturdays testing kids for other school districts because mine didn’t pay enough to get by comfortably. Currently working part time for the first time in 51 years- don’t have to anymore but it’s nice get out of the house a couple of days a week and get paid for it!

I was a full time firefighter after I got out of the Navy in 89. We worked 24/24 shifts. I was a plumber on my days off. in 93 we started 24/48 shifts and in 94 I bought the company from my dad. Worked like this until 2018 when I retired from the Full-time Fire job! (still volunteered until I retired fully from the fire service in 2024.

Wrapping it all up with part-time...at some point.
After Clemson, I wanted to give airline work a shot...but was only allowed 20 hours/week. So, I kept my summer job with Avis, since it was at the airport, too (Charleston)!. Airline work started at 6AM until 10 or so. Avis would schedule me afterwards, or I'd work the closing shift if I wasn't at the airline the next morning.
I loved the schedule...used Avis to run around...put the airline in the bank for a future move. Fast forward 48 years and I've been doing part-time consulting for my 'Italian job', as I affectionately call my Italy-based client. It's largely remote so I can work while vacationing wherever. As long as they want me...I'll continue. It meets my long-held notion that, for me, retirement would be doing what I want to do, when I want to do it...and from where. Sweet times!

Tried some part time consulting twice. Around 1990, I put together a waterline extension project for an industrial park. Did the work from home, and charged the developer just 500 for something valued at around 4-5 grand at the time.
He had the plans and specs, but I held onto the DHEC construction permit until he finally had to pay about 2 months later.
I would have loved the consulting full-time, but I hated the "collections" part. I needed someone like tug or Marlon Brando.
Or maybe, I just sucked at finding the right clients.

Idk if you would call it part time but my part time started out as a hobby. Several people became interested and wanted to buy so I started a little side gig. Its a catering business and only do it on weekends though and try to get in 1 event each month. I'm doing something I enjoy and get to make a little extra money while doing it.

When I was a young man, Dad ran a couple of fireworks stands for about 20 years. I would take paid vacation time during the holidays, and run one of the stands.
The pay was at least as good as my regular job.

My most interesting part time job was refereeing intramural basketball when I was a student at Clemson. Those daggum sorority girls would get really serious!

I also had a part time job while I was at Clemson and I refereed basketball, soccer and whatever else I could get as I had student loans, etc.
Worse was the frat games.
But it put some $$$ in my pocket.

I worked evenings and weekends delivering pizzas for Papa Johns. Was a really good second income, just made for some seriously long days. I paid the bills and child support with my day job and paid for everything else from PJs - groceries, eating out, gas, etc.
Saturday's weren't bad. This was in the days of XM Satellite Radio - before streaming audio/video. I'd listen to college football games all day on fall Saturdays while I worked. Was kinda cool listening to other team's feeds.

I paid for my tuition in cash up front and I didn't owe a dime when I graduated. I had a part time job when I first started teaching so I could pay for Grad School at Clemson.
