Wes Goodwin question

Is it my imagination or is it a fact that our linebackers and secondary guys are not getting pressure or sacks like we did with Venables? Is this a scheme to avoid the busts or long plays giving up? Is it a talent issue? I think our talent is very comparable. I say it is time to gamble a little more so we can get those negative plays that we are accustomed to. I am really seeing this for last year and the three games so far this season. If someone researches and I am seeing things wrong then I will admit to being wrong.

He doesn’t seem to be aggressive bringing pressure. Occasionally in a 3 man front you will him send a LB, but rarely does he attempt to blitz with a safety. This season I think it’s a better situation with the DBs so I would like to see him dial up more blitzing. Maybe that will evolve as the season gets going.

It’s probably the final year or two there won’t be two or more Swinney boys on the staff at any given time.

Next year, they install a bar at the entrance just like at Disney World rides. "No receivers past this point if your height is under this bar." That should do it, till the grandkids show up!

Now we did give up the deep ball against scu an Tennessee last year. But that hasn’t been the case so far this season. Duke had only 175 yards passing against us. Now we do need to get more sacks, but overall the defense has played good. Also, keep in mind that Venables is one of the greatest defensive coordinators in the history of college football. You’re just not gonna find a defensive coach comparable to Venables in college football. The only two coaches you could compare him to are Saban and Smart.

if we could also contain the QB. Now, as it stands; we get zero sacks and every QB we play scampers at will for first downs.
Unfortunately, our DL prob looks awesome at practice…

I was thinking the same thing, but it does seem like he brought a lot more blitzes Saturday than we had been seeing. Hope he continues.

Half of our current sack total belongs to DB’s. Goodwin calls less blitzes but they are more effective when called.

It's your imagination. The defense has been getting pressure pretty well. There haven't been as many sacks because Duke in particular was throwing the ball so quickly.

Um did you miss Phillips running through a wide open whole for a sack on Saturday night??? Wes actually game plans quite well, he doesn’t go all out pressure he sprinkles it in when needed. Our secondary is looking quite good which was for a little bit one of our weaknesses. Teams have figured out how to deal with pressure though a lot better then before by getting the ball out quickly as possible.

BV ran some 2 high, but those safeties were aggressive...

in their run fits. Muse was terrific playing down hill as example, but got caught looking in the wrong place and beat over the top. That aggressive play was top down. That is the BV gamble, risk reward and put his safeties in the midst of it. Stop the run, first and always, that's the BV way.
Over ~5O% of the time BV would walk down a safety[stop the run], playing 1 high, corners on islands, then let loose the dogs to hunt tackles for loss in the run/screen game leaving the opponent's offense playing behind the sticks. Get them in 3rd and longish, then get off the field.
This is classic, BV 1 high against the greatest team ever assembled - AL A FRICKIN BAMA.

When you can play the best team ever having 10 of your 11 play within 7 yards of the LOS, you got a serious set on you and a team of dudes you trust - that's BVball right there. I miss it.
I saw more of that from Wes last year and the 2022 overall stats support it. Unfortunately Clemson's perceived weakness coming into 2022 was 5 new starters in the back seven, which only got worse when some front-liners went down - see Wake, and the myriad of busts in the back end through out the season.
Still, Clemson finished 4th in sacks and 2nd in TFLs in 2022. That's BV good, no shyatt.

When you have safeties[FS, SS, Nickle/SAM] you trust to play as aggressive as BV did in a spread happy world, you can chance ~empty leaving BAMA's RB to Muse patrolling his 1/2 at the 1st down marker and then send Mullen as BV did on 3rd and 6. BV and team had made Tua uncomfortable long before that play and started taking advantage.

Another big difference between the two, an intriguing one to me, is BV is a late caller, while Wes is reported to be an early one. They've both made good cases for their way, so the full impact, if any, might not yet be known?
Coming into 2023 with a much improved defensive back end, it seemed to set the stage for a return to a more aggressive play style from Wes, but with a lot fewer busts?
It has not played out that way as of yet, certainly not against Duke, as Clemson is way down the list in sacks and a pedestrian top 25 in TFLs. It's early and would be a good weekend to get busy with FSWho coming to town.

I think some of it has to do with secondary play. Venables had the luxury of bringing exotic blitz because his secondary could hold up in coverage. He had guys like, Alexander, Tankersley, Mullen, Terrell, Booth. We took our lumps in the secondary last year. Wiggins is looking good so far. And we have some building blocks.
