Yesterday, I caught a great deal of ridicule for suggesting that others might want Wes.

Not sure that even remotely implies that Wes has taken an offer elsewhere.

He is not going to kill it , Venables will be fired at seasons end next year if not before and he will be looking for another job . Venables does not have the 5 star talent he had at Clemson and his schedule is a tough one next year . The combo of Dabo, Brent , Jeff Scott , was a heck of a staff especially on the recruiting trail and he doesn’t have that at Oklahoma .

I'd take that bet. I do think they complement one another nicely (Wes is smart but overthinks and is timid, Venables isn't as smart but is aggressive with great instincts on plays). But Venables' good will is gone. Their schedule is brutal next year. Venables has basically the same schedule he just went 6-7 in, and just lost his entire team to the portal. I think he has to go 9-3 or better to keep his job there: Michigan, @ SCar, @ Texas, Ole Miss, Tennessee, @ Alabama, and LSU. They'll both be on the job market next year.

Some program out there is like man we’ve been doing too much tackling. We need to eliminate that right away. How about wes Goodwin? Perfect.

I think we might see him as DC at OU (or something like Co-DC where he can be in the booth). That doesn't make Goodwin a good coach. If you're drowning in the ocean, a termite infested garbage can still seems like an okay option. Venables' ### is on fire right now and he's desperate for anything to help him survive next season without being fired. But Venables also has no team any more because they all transferred away and one of the hardest schedules in the country next year. He's basically banking on a transfer QB who was just okay playing in a nonexistent conference.
So no, you're the only one who looks dumb.

Serious question: if a team tackles poorly, is that on the DC?
Dec 31, 2024, 1:14 PM
[ in reply to Re: He suggest that Wes has taken an offer when he said,... ] |

I’ve never played organized football, let alone at the D1 level. It seems to me that position coaches would work on technique and whatnot and the DC would create a structure to best use the talent. But maybe a DC has to create a defensive culture of expecting clean tackles and finishing a play? I just don’t know.

It is on the DC as well, or it should be. The positional coaches are under your chain of command. If they continue to be terrible, it's your fault.
That said, I don't think tackling is the problem. It's more a problem of positioning and players not being where they should be on any given play. That's much more on the coordinator. I did a full analysis of a drive or two in the Texas game and explained the issues. People liked it on here. I can track it down and PM it to you if you want to know more.
