Offensive Question

To folks who understand the game and watching film more than me, which is probably everyone on here. I am on the bandwagon that we have so much returning production from last year’s offense, and I want to light up the scoreboard in 2025. Part of that is the second half of Texas, SMU, NC State, etc. But…so many times we would go 2+ quarters and be in such a drought on offense, not even getting in FG range. I’m thinking of Pitt, Va Tech, USC. I know some of that was injuries on the line, but are we really going to snap our fingers and not have that this year? That is honestly my biggest hesitation for thinking, This is the year. What were some of those issues, and are they fixable? We have a lot of those same players and scheme on that side of the ball this year.
Also, not much mention of this, but the rolling clock on first downs really have shortened the game and limited possessions. I think this makes these scoring droughts even more of an issue. Thanks!

I’m probably wrong but the more I’ve thought about it I think they were just coaching not to lose on offense because they knew the defense couldn’t hold up. Get a lead keep the defense off the field and pray nothing bad happens. Which is why I think we only ever saw them really open it up against weaker teams and when their back was against the wall and didn’t have a choice.

Im right there with you. We had some ugly stretches of offensive football last season, especially over the last half of the year. Overall the offense took a huge step forward but we certainly need to be more consistent against decent teams.

You are correct in your concerns, we did go through dry periods. It did seem like our play calling became conservative when we got a lead. But to me that is when our offense needs to drive the ball down the field to put the dagger in our opponent. If we have the ball and driving it keeps the ball from opponent. I know that is oversimplifying but we need to execute and score

I think we have a bad habit of taking out foot off the gas. Meaning we get conservative and predictable. Our opponents know this.

At times. And this has served us well, thinking of ND and Auburn games of the past. Fabio is not afraid to tell the defense to go win the game. I’m thinking of VA Tech and going into halftime at what, 7-7, or 0-7? They just didn’t seem like the team that should be holding our offense down like that. I guess I’m hoping for more consistency this year, even if that means 14-17 points each half instead of a 7-10 spot.

I think Garret Riley is way overated…that’s one of our major offensive issues. If he didn’t have the last name of Riley, he wouldn’t be living on lake keowee making millions of dollars each year👌

All of this may be true, but I think that part of the problem is our skill player rotation. Several games last year, after getting a lead , we rotated in some other skill players that were not our starters. I’m not sure why this was done, but it took away our momentum and often led to quick three and outs for our offense.
I realize that our HC takes great pride in playing as many players as possible, but the timing of these substitutions often did more harm than good. There is a fine line between trying to play backups to build depth and playing time to try to keep players happy.

I think part of the Texas game was Clemson had no choice but to play wide open. The team was down big early so they had to go for it. I think part of the biggest problem was not playing wide open for 4 quarters. If they play wide open every game this year I don’t see why it couldn’t be replicated. Every offense will slump at some point. As long as it’s not at the worst possible time I think they’ll be fine.

Not having a replacement for Mafah after his injury was a big factor. Phil simply couldn’t play without significant pain and it showed. No running game made the offense stagnant last November. Oline injuries didn’t help either.
Now let’s consider what may different this year. Deeper more experienced receivers. Hopefully, 2+ RBs they can trust to atleast force a defense to respect those play calls. Oline is deeper and more experienced. Cade is more experienced and has strong talent around him. Riley? I too am skeptical about this guy’s ability to call a 4 quarter game effectively. This is his deepest and most talented squad. He needs to show us he can adapt in-game and utilize all the tools available to him. Otherwise it will start all the debate about Dabo meddling in the play calls (🤦).

I am also not convinced that Cade will take the next step and eliminate his panicky boneheaded mistakes.

There’s plenty of reason for concern on both sides of the ball. However the continuity and development of personnel gives reason for optimism too. Other schools have even more questions, less continuity, and less cohesiveness. Offense showed plenty of potential, but they do need to keep their foot on the pedal.

Not simple as in "that question is so easy even a coot could answer it" but simple as in "I'm not smart enough to give a commplex answer."
1. OL should be much better this year. 2nd year under Luke. Lots of retruning quality talent.
2. WR room is loaded. Last year they were either young or injured.
3. Cade is a year older. With a better OL and a better WR corp, that should lead to a better performance by him, which by the way was pretty darn good last year.
4. Question mark is RB. Can they stay healthy? Are they good enough. No experienced talent there.
5. I didn't mention TE but I think that room will be fine. Not as productive as last year, but with the talent at WR, they won't need to be.
And,
6. The defense should be VASTLY better. That means more possessions for offense. Offense won't have to play conservative to "protect the defense."

#6 is an underrated answer. More short possessions forced by the defense flips the field and Riley can keep calling vertical plays. He seems to struggle a bit and go lateral with the calls deeper in our own end of the field. That’s when WR screens most frustrate Becky from Gaffney (and she’s not alone).
