Many of the writers here seem to have a subliminal narrative going that makes it pretty easy to see where they stand on the issue. It's actually pretty easy to see.
Article header pictures, especially after losses, always depict him in thought or in a moment of sarcasm, but with a serious article tone (Clemson loses), it allows others to view Brownell in a comedic light and furthers the, "let's pick at every single facial expression and mannerism the guy has" viewpoint.
Pictures of Brownell complaining to officials are used to paint a picture of, "I'm complaining because I have no idea what I'm doing," when in reality, he's in a competitive moment, showing passion and fire...something his detractors insist he never does.
You're right...this is, and always was, a non-story. Unfortunately, Clemson's most popular beat site would rather it be much more of one. Publishing it allows it to be just that.

Exactly. The typical agenda to minimize basketball is pretty clear.

Other than the obvious game summaries, there is very little content from Clemson media outlets. It’s the bare minimum. We don’t even get press conference videos after road games. No recruiting updates in terms of players we’ve offered or players who visited campus. I am not expecting to know every time an assistant coach sends a tweet or a recruit takes a leak, as we get with football, but a reasonable level of info for a revenue-generating sport like basketball would be nice. The successful basketball programs many fans here want us to emulate get far better basketball interest and coverage than we do.

greater coverage and media consideration. I recall similar references to the football program merely five years back about the national media, until the program built its identity and started winning everything in sight, and now it's wall to wall with near infomercial territory on some of it.
The media is fueled by eyeballs and clicks. If basketball is selling the media will invest time in it. If something else delivers better results that's where the coverage goes. You always want to keep the pump primed, and there's plenty of that here now.
There's a lot of self-fulfilling prophecy reasoning behind basketball's middling stature around here though. Engagement, identity, and results - those responsibilities lie at the top of the program, not those who cover it. For fans, there's a solid core in place, but there's really only one way to get to the electric level.

Even if we lost to FSU and Miami, Clemson was never going to fire a HC in the middle of a national crisis. How would that make it look to any other HC they could potentially hire more worried about their families?
16-15 and the team never lost in the ACCT and had already beaten 3/4 of the top ACC seeds... Plus ending the chapel hill streak.
I cannot believe this was EVER inferred in a time of crisis.
Edit: If you seriously TDed me for saying firing ANY coach during a national crisis was inappropriate, you sure need to get your priorities straight. Our offices are closed and work from home, nobody is looking for jobs in CBB right now.

Just as a point of clarification, Clemson's losing streak in Chapel Hill preceded opening of the Dean Dome in 1986. Not all 59 losses occurred in the Dean Dome.

Point out where Clemson won in Chapel Hill before this year. I don't recall saying Dean Dome at all. 0-59 is 0-59.
Brownell didn't lose in the ACCT and it is inappropriate to fire ANYBODY right now.

He's a millionaire and nothing about what's going on in society should have bearing on firing a coach. I mean let's not act like we don't have 10 years of evidence. With that said I never thought he'd be fired this year. I've been up and down this year but I have no doubt next year is a make or break year for him. With what he has coming back and the emergence of the young guys there is no excuse. Personally I don't think there is an excuse for being a 6 seed in the NIT but hey that's just me. Some may find excuses but thats my feelings and they aren't changing so you'd be wasting your time even trying to argue with me because it isn't happening.

Based on Leggett and Smith, DRad does have the balls to make tough decisions.

Have you considered the fact that maybe, just maybe, he sees the good Brownell is doing and has confidence in him?
DRad’s job is to evaluate how each coach is doing. He has way more info than anyone else, which he uses to make his decisions. Perhaps you should trust him and his experience, rather than thinking you know better.

Two NCCA berths in ten years is not doing a good job. At most other schools he would have been fired a long time ago.If we had this attitude in football Tommy Bowden would still be our coach and we would not have any of our Championships under him. Take off your orange colored glasses for a second and see the reality of what is happening!

look I don't think I know better but 2 ncaa berths in 10 years come on and don't forget one of those ncaa berths came with oiver Purnell players so he actually has 1 ncaa berth in 10 years with his players and called that doing a good job if this was the football dabo would be gone

Well, basketball isn't football and that's the point.
Mar 14, 2020, 10:42 AM

Basketball at Clemson isn't supported like football is. Our coaches have to scratch and claw for everything they get, whether that be facilities, additional staff, or fan support.
If our football program were supported like our basketball program has been, Dabo wouldn't have won any championships.

If going to the tournament in year one with "Purnell's players" (who I believe Oliver wouldn't have taken to the tournament, but that's another post) is viable enough to take away from his two tournament appearances (you said he only gets one tournament appearance in your mind), how is it not an unfair narrative to then claim he has been to one tournament in 10 seasons. After all, you JUST claimed in the same post that one of those seasons doesn't go towards his credit. Get out of here with that nonsensical take.
The narrative relating any sport at Clemson to our football program needs to stop. The culture of support towards football at Clemson cannot be compared to any other sport. None. Yes...Dabo worked very hard to get some of the MAJOR improvements that took place. But you cannot compare the two sports...period.
Football at Clemson was like a 1967 Shelby Mustang that just needed a few updates and tweaks to return to its glory days. That Mustang found itself in a shop full of resources, ready to go. The basketball program, on the other hand, was a clunker. The car had been reliable for the previous owner...he drove it, proverbially, into the ground, and then he left it at the junkyard for scrap metal because all of the resources in the town were at the shop with the Mustang.
It's not easy to start over...but that's what basketball did. Fortunately, there's been some investment into elements of the program to try to have sustained success and not fleeting success that goes when the coach leaves. I, for one, think it's being done right. The growing pains have been tough, don't get me wrong. But I do think we're getting there.

best is the standard is what dabo says about football why can't we have the same standard for basketball i'm sorry my nonsensical take means I want all of our sports to do well and be the best maybe you should take your loser mentality take and join the gamecocks.

I'm not saying "best" can't be "the standard" in all of our sports. What I am saying is that the path to get there isn't going to look the same for Clemson basketball. It's a much more long-term change. Clemson football had the resources in place to make a fairly quick change and have immediate success. Clemson basketball wasn't, and still isn't, in the same position. It has improved, certainly, but there's no comparison about the makeup of the two programs.

apply it to basketball, yet be unwilling to invest accordingly. You can't say that we should have high expectations for the program, but balk at the idea that we throw some money (especially money that could also be spent on football) toward the basketball program.
There was a recent thread here which posed the question: would you give up one football win a year for 10 more wins in basketball. Pretty much everyone who responded said no. No one even considered whether or not that one loss in football would be significant, or keep us out of the playoffs. The message was that football is NEVER to be compromised for basketball, even if it meant little to no impact on football and a huge benefit for basketball.
You can't have your cake and eat it too. You can't say on one hand that we are unabashedly passionate about football and that it should be the priority all the time, yet also say that "best is the standard" when it comes to other sports. There are programs which prioritize basketball over football, as well as programs that prioritize basketball along with football. We aren't close to being either one at Clemson. Historically, basketball at Clemson gets the scraps. It hasn't been quite that bad lately at Clemson, but it is still clearly a distant second in terms of priority and importance.
The last figures I saw, which were from several years ago, showed that Clemson was 14th out of 15 ACC teams with regard to basketball spending. As I have stated, we are getting a lot for our investment since we are way better than a bottom dweller in the ACC. To be 14th in spending, but around 7th or 8th in terms of average finish under Brownell, shows that he is delivering a ton of value for us. That is especially true since our fan support for basketball is probably toward the bottom of the ACC as well. All this at a school with an awful basketball history as well.

With the top 10 home wins, injuries, young team, and higher ranked recruits coming in for next year, was there ever any question of Clemson firing Brownell? Honestly, I’m wondering why the question was being asked of the Clemson insiders. Yes this season was disappointing but generally met with expectations pre-season and really no different than what DRad has accepted over the past 10 seasons, while also greenlighting contract extensions.
Bottomline, next season is where the hot seat comes into play both from the W/L’s and the remaining contract financials.
The financial losses being incurred by the conference and each school due to the virus is also likely to influence all sports with regard to the athletic departments and donors willingness to eat any buyouts over the next year. I predict this situation will keep coaches employed as compared to recent years when the economy was doing well and athletic departments were running in the black and/or capable to manage debt.

Fine give him another year we all know next year if expectations are not met the people making excuses now will find more excuses not to fire the coach. Our basketball team lives in a state of excuses and mediocrity.
