Number of top 20 running back recruits be past two years

for some select schools (ranking):

Alabama - 3 (1, 5, 6)
Georgia - 2 (1, 3)
Ohio State - 1 (16)
South Carolina - 1 (19)
North Carolina - 3 (5, 7, 20)
NC State - 1 (18)
Miami - 3 (4, 12, 15)
Florida State - 1 (14)
Oklahoma - 2 (10,11)
Oregan - 3 (7,8,17)
Clemson - 0

Seems like Miami and North Carolina are doing well recruiting RBs, but the rest of the ACC is right with us at 1 or 0.

I wonder why a recruit would pick Alabama to sit the bench AND get "portaled" over as well?

I think the answer to your question is Will Shipley #2 and Phil Mafha #13 in their class.
There is no top recruit who wants to come in and sit behind those two for two or three years. Besides that Kobe Pace was third in line before he left.

Alabama and UGA have higher ranked backs than that

on their roster, so I don't think that's a great argument.

Approx 6 or 7 currently on their greater than or equal to Shipley's rating value-

Look at each schools tradition at running back and the ones they have in the NFL

The best argument is really NFL pedigree. One or Two good years at Alabama can easily land you in the first round or 2nd round. Clemson does not have that pedigree. However Clemson did/does for the time being have that same level of pedigree with DL.

Etienne was only a 3-Star, 26th rated at his position by Rivals his senior year in high school. He turned out pretty well, I'd say. ANY running back's success is going to be influenced in large part by their offensive line. THAT is where we seem to be having trouble developing talent. You can't say we aren't RECRUITING talent there, if STARS mean anything. We need a good, hard nosed O-Line coach. There is a reason certain schools, like Wisconsin, lets say, always seem to have great running games. Find the architect of that, and hire HIM!

This narrative is so tiring

Etienne was a composite 4 star, #15 RB, #213 overall.

He also held offers from 18 other P5 schools (Alabama, Arkansas, California, Iowa State, Kansas, LSU, Miami, Mississippi State, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma State, Oregon, Oregon State, TCU, Tennessee, Texas A&M, Vanderbilt, and Virginia Tech)

Contrast that with Keith Adams Jr, Jarvis Greene, and Jamarius Haynes. All of them were 3 stars. None of them were top 50 at their position. None of them were ranked in the top 1000. And combined they held 2 other P5 offers: Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech.

It's amazing to see the lengths people will go to rationalize our RB recruiting under Spiller. They attempt to distort the facts to fit their narrative. Adults doing childish things. Wild.

Jarvis Greene has potential not excited about the others as starters tbh. Green reminds me of Andre Ellington.

I believe Jamarius Haynes has the highest ceiling between Green and Adams Jr.

We offered all the top RBs in both cycles so it is not a matter of not recruiting top RBs. We’ve just missed.

Some have argued that having Ship and Mafah have deterred others from signing here. The data doesn’t support this when you look at other programs, especially when you whiff on them all.

You can’t say we haven’t put guys in the league because by my count we’ve put at least 5 in the NFL since 2010. Maybe it’s OL, maybe it’s CJ, I don’t really know.

What I do know is the misses have left us very thin and having to rely on 5 guys that were not highly rated. This means at least 2 of those must pan out over the next 2 years.

More importantly, we’ve seen in the past what a weapon a guy like CJ or TE can be from the RB spot. Remove that threat and you put more pressure on the QB and WRs.

True. Zamir White selected UGA over Clemson. He really never became a great player at Ga however

I am stumped why we can't attract any interest from a mid to top tier running back. Heck, we can't even make a top 5, 6, 10 for any of our early offers. From all looks, it appears Shipley and Mafah love playing for CJ and I think they have both shown significant development. The OL was horrible last year in run blocking but were much improved this year. I just have to assume CJ struggles on the recruiting trail for some reason. Maybe not warm and fuzzy, can't convey how the prospect will be used. I just don't know. All the other top programs recruit a back or two in every cycle so sitting behind Shipley/Mafah...I'm not sold on that argument. It is a "recruiting" problem.

Alabama's top 2 rushers are Jrs. Georgia's top 2 are Sr, Jr

2

Jan 12, 2023, 10:49 AM

Clemson's top two are sophomores. Alabamas top running back has declared for the draft. Trey Sanders has hit the portal and headed to TCU.

Hope that answers your question. Again.

RB has NOT been our problem … EVER during the Dabo era.

Our high level offensive success or comparative mediocrity under Dabo has been predicated on stellar performance at QB and WR.

We are not … and have not been for a long time … a program built around primary use of the running game.

When we’ve had a great QB and several really good receivers, we’ve prospered.

The RB position is not and has not been our issue.

This looks eerily similar to the WR recap that was done on here recently. Only difference is that we are getting good production from our RBs, at least. Can't really argue about recruits not wanting to compete for playing time when the same schools get top recruits every year.
