I spoke with a former Clemson assistant basketball coach last night. He has always told me that Brownell is an excellent coach. He said is recent success is due to not having to recruit against Duke, UNC, etc. for high school players. That is not is strong suit. He said from a coaching standpoint he is one of the best though. The ability to see players with experience and not have to out recruit other schools has been the key.

That's great. Clemson has the longest tenured coach in the ACC who can't recruit high school players. Who has cost Clemson two ACC regular season co-championships with losses to a terrible Louisville team and a Georgia Tech team who lost to Wake yesterday by 26.

BroWnell can recruit on both ends. He is the master of the portal and he recruited high school players and developed them into All-ACC players. Just shut up.

I think his HS recruiting has picked up significantly over the last 4-5 years. I think a few more outstanding seasons aided greatly by portal additions may boost his HS recruiting even more.

He needed to have some decent success to expand his HS recruiting footprint. It was a tough sell when we were going 17-14 every year. He had great luck with local highly-ranked recruits (i.e. SC, NC, and Georgia) like PJ Hall, Blossomgame, the Hunter brothers, Milton Jennings, etc. and was in the final two for Zion just because of proximity.... but going into the portal and adding guys has seemed to help establish a reasonable baseline. We have the faciliies, fan support, and play in a league that gets enough eyeballs. Plus we now appear to be a team that should be around 20+ wins and sniffing around the NCAAT on a consistent basis, so now he can go and sign the Dallas Thomas, Del Jones, Zac Fosters of the world.

Virtually no evidence suggests he is an "excellent" coach. None.

NIT loss to Morehead St is beyond meaningless. If that's your gripe, you have serious mental issues.

Not sure what this means: "He said is recent success is due to not having to recruit against Duke, UNC, etc. for high school players." Who is he recruiting against?

I agree. I once spoke to Dickie V. and he said several years ago the same thing. A good coach but poor recruiter was the buzz for Brad. Also, he said Brad was a great person.

I don't get why anyone puts Brownell on such a pedestal. He is not a great head basketball coach. He's been at Clemson for 15 seasons, yet: NO Final Four, No ACC conference title, NO ACC tournament title, and a couple of NCAA Tournament runs (Sweet 16 and Elite 8 last year). That's in 15 years! His overall coaching at Clemson is barely above .525, yet some Tiger fans are hailing him as some Iconic HC. The league has certainly gone downhill in coaching. I just witnessed a few ACC games over the weekend, and I honestly had to laugh. Capel (Pitt), Autry (Syracuse) Madsen (Stanford), Va Tech's coach, Davis (UNC), Hamilton (Fla. St.), BC, SMU, and more, are atrocious. No fundamental base is being taught, and the players are simply playing street basketball. Poor man defense, whoever gets the ball shoots it or drives the lane, no passing to other teammates, no interior defense, and everybody is 3-point shot crazy. It's like make-it-take it, "I got next" basketball. I haven't any team that I would favor to win the National Championship this year. Auburn? Alabama? Houston? Tennessee? These teams are more athletic that any of the other teams I've seen this season, but they have NO fundamental base. The coaches seem to throw them on the floor and say: "scuffle and make the best of it!". None of these guys are students of the game. The blame falls upon the head coaches, period. Coaching is teaching, not transfer portaging and exchanging new players every year. This why Brownell is 25-6, not because he's some great, iconic coach. I saw UConn yesterday playing, and I have to say that They may be the most dangerous team in the Big Dance. Their record is at 22-7, and they certainly are well-coached by Hurley. They actually perform like a team who understands pure basketball.
