=== as I don't have a channel for that. Tour de France rates with the best sports events -> bar none.
These athletes (even the last in the field) "pale" most all other athletes as to ability and heart.
This is a "team event", most don't get or understand that.
They give "all" each day and do it day after day for three weeks.

My buddy Earl Owens told me to buy a bike as it would help my running. At the time I was 45 and doing all I could just trying to gain one more second in a foot race. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earl_Owens
I got the first carbon fiber bike to arrive in Charlotte and set about to train "with science". I got a stand so I could ride the bike indoors as being on the road scared me to death.
I entered a few Biathlons and always won the Masters due to running. In the bike segment I would "work out" with my heart rate monitor and cadence counter. The deal was as my heart rate changed, would shift up or down to maintain a pedal count around 100. I would be working my ### off as fat folks passed by laughing. I was not a biker, but no matter as at some point we would hit the running segment.
On the flip my Bride loved the bike. Being 5' she ordered one with different size tires to level out her racing bike. She was an ace runner, and loved the bike. I would join her bike group on Sunday mornings. One day she comes home and tells me she has signed us up on her company team to ride 150 miles to Myrtle Beach.

I started riding a bike after I discovered that I had bone spurs on the back of my heels. My podiatrist said they would have to make "mince meat" out of my achilles tendons to remove the spurs and suggested cycling. I bought a cheap all round bike and just about wore it out when I upgraded to a Trek Lance Armstrong (US Postal) model. A few years later I bought a Titanium frame Lynskey which I still have. After suffering a Mallory-Weiss tear in my esophagus one day after throwing up while riding my bike, I lost so much blood, it took darn near six months to regain all of my strength. My wife wanted me to quit riding, as she thought it was too dangerous on the road, I have pretty much quit and started walking.
I'm not sure how much biking helps running as they are really a lot different in the muscles you us. Doing both are great for you, but a really good biker isn't going to get off his bike and immediately become a great runner ...... and vice versa. Of course there are exceptions, as Lance Armstrong ran a good Boston Marathon while still a cyclist.
One thing for sure, every single Tour de France rider is a world class athlete. Huge respect for those guys.

I never liked biking after I outgrew my childhood schwinn. Much like running(jogging), just no interest. After the Lance Armstrong slime show for years, they should ban biking except as part of a triathalon.

I expected someone sooner to bring up Lance. No sport (not college football) is as tested as the Tour.
To believe Lance with or without ### is not a special athlete means you need to look into this.
I am 100% against PED, but it is in every sport. Few are a Lance.

Teams ride at a level no lone mortal can match. All are on life line after a hundred miles. The horses are pulling all. After a 100 miles or so in the alps one guy like Lance musters the heart to attack and leave the safety of the pack.

This starts July 5th and is an incredible event. The athletes in this are second to none. Over 21 days they will "race" for nearly 2000 miles over flats and mountains. They will do time trials and daily races over 100 miles.
Just getting in means one is an exceptional athlete. These guys make a lot of $$. The bikes they use go for around $20K. On the tour they will have the best of science to support them. After each day they have to re-fuel and rest for the next. It is an endurance event at the highest level man can do.
For 3 weeks guys will line up everyday with the best in the world to do battle. That is tuff both mentally and physically.
It is a dangerous event, many will carted off in an ambulance. Loose concentration for a second and you might be done.
What most don't realist it that this is a "team event". Each team has a guy they will go all out to support. For example, if he has a flat tire they will quickly give up their bike to him. They will block the wind and do all to keep him safe and rested. Guys not on a strong team have zero chance of making the podium.
Everyday there are important races going on with little to do as to those competing to win. The best sprinters will have opportunities to shine. The best climbers will fight for that title. Winning just one day of the 21 -> makes one a legend, so guys/teams will go for that each day. It is possible for the over all winner to never win a day.
Different types of athletes will be there. -- The sprinters have no chance at the podium, but will win individual days. These are awesome, fearless guys. Their teams will help them hang in for a hundred miles, then lead them out when the finish is near. -- Strong riders are the most important of all, and will control the race. Day after day they will do the work. They are not there to win or place, but it can happen. -- A very few will hope to make the podium or have any chance at it. These will be the smaller, thinner guys who can endure the mountain stages. They will be helped and protected by all on their team, but in the end must go it alone. These guys will win or loose in the mountain stages.

Nailed it Tug! I always pull for the breakaways, but only once in a blue moon do they succeed. The peleton (pack) is like a heard of elephants eventually running you down. Once the breakaway is caught none of them have any sort of chance in finishing that leg toward the front.
When I rode a lot, I would always enter the time trials at Donaldson Center in Greenville, held four times a summer by the local bike club. The time trial is 10 miles, fairly mild, except for one long downhill, which meant it was a long uphill on the return (five miles out and five back). My goal was to average 20 mph, which I managed to do (10 miles in 30 minutes). I finished in like 29:40. The really good riders were finishing in about 20 minutes (30 mph). In contrast, the Tour rider ride about 25 mph, with plenty of ups and down on many of the legs. Incredible.

Hats off to these guys and everyone else that ride to compete.
Isn't there a bike ride around or up on Mt Mitchell, NC?
I'm just wore out thinking about it.

RESPECT for all bikers/runners but all it got me was a few tee shirts and two replaced hips and two knees. But running helped me quit smoking in 1976 so I'm eternally grateful. I always record the Tour mostly for the countryside and castle scenes. Great stuff. Live long and prosper and keep on WALKING y'all!
