Tipping on take-out

I know I'm El-cheapo. However, it seems like a number of restaurants are now giving the option of making you choose a tip or not when swiping your card. Even when just picking up a take-out order that has been called in or done online.
I always thought the tip was for the waiter/ waitress for giving good service. It looks like they're just trying to make it become an additional cost of the food.
Do you normally tip when just picking up a food order?

Then you could only do take out for a while, so of course.
Now....yeah, it's out of hand and I think I grew accustomed to it and continue to tip on takeout.

heard of anybody actually doing it unless there was some special circumstance where the restaurant or person went above and beyond. Having it presented on a touchscreen, or otherwise suggested in such a way as if it was expected or commonplace was absolutely unheard of.

as hostesses, waitresses, bartenders, etc., (no pigs) and I get it. I have heard countless stories about cheapskates and rude, ungrateful customers. Personally, I always tip at least 20%, sometimes 30% or more when I dine in and someone brings food or drink to me. Somehow though, restaurants and their workers survived and thrived for many years without tipping for carryout, and if they can't do so now, it's not because people won't tip for carryout. People providing carryout should derive their income from a fair hourly wage. If not, they should quit and restaurants should go out of business. At least half of McDonalds and BK and so on are drive through/carryout, and nobody ever tipped for that, or at least I never heard of it. Why is it a thing now?

different than tipping at a place with waitstaff. If a restaurant has waitstaff, they are probably the ones taking care of the to-go orders. Ask your daughters who did it where they work.
Also, there is a higher % takeout now than previously. So a waiter could be busy all night doing to-go orders and not have as many tables.

Still, taking an order, putting the stuff in a bag and setting it aside is a far cry from actually waiting on customers who sit down in the restaurant; an entirely different level of service and skills required, so if the dine-in/sit-down server deserves 20%-25%, the call-in servers couldn't possibly deserve more than 5-10%, if time, effort, and skill has any bearing whatsoever.
But here's the one's that really get me, like at 5-Guys burgers or Jersey Mike's Subs; just a person behind a register or a counter, and you walk up, order, and they hand you the order; they still present you with the option to tip 15%. 20%, 25%, 30%, or NONE. I don't feel bad about hitting NONE, and shame on that restaurant owner or manager if he won't pay his employees.

Waitstaff doesn't. Maybe the hostess does, and maybe the hostess does the take-out. But if she does, she probably does have a tip-based wage. The way I look at it, that $3-$5 on takeout is going to make much more of a difference for them than it is for me, particularly if their wage depends on it. And maybe they have to split with the kitchen, too.
But also restaurants are facing a much bigger labor shortage than before, and so increasing wages with tips is a way to keep the good folks at your favorite places.

and they are at like $2.13 per hour.
I'm about a 10% guy on take out, no more than that....mainly because it isn't like a lot of work/service they provide but at the same time 10% isn't really any biggie to give.

I'm a standard 10% on take out as well. Unless they habitually mess up my order. Then I won't.
However, the non-tipping may be leading to the order mess ups - so it is a vicious cycle.
Perhaps I will tip next time even when my order is screwed up in hopes the process then rights itself.

Might as well tip at Publix for the woman ringing up my order at the register. Nope. Don't do it.
Now if I eat there, it's usually 20%. Where some person had to walk to my table, take my order, deliver it to the kitchen, then bring out the food, fill our glasses, etc.

order (if you call), getting it boxed and bagged, adding all your sauce on the side, etc, checking you out when you show up and making sure you get the correct/all the food.
So unless you simply cannot afford it I think you should tip on takeout.
Obligatory: tipping system in the US is broken and should be abolished. But it's not. So it is what it is.

Gets paid the same as the servers waiting tables. So yes you are supposed to tip them around 10% for getting the order ready and bagged and checking to make sure it is correct. It’s not a new concept at all, I used to have a GF that did to-go at Carrabas in Asheville and 10% was customary (this was in 2004).

through the drive through and pick it up. If somebody brings it to my car, I will tip them. A tip is strictly for people who provide a service but depend on tips for income since they don't get paid a regular wage by their employer.

have the tip screen automatically in the payment progression, which in my opinion coming up in food & bev, is a good thing. It guilts cheapos into tipping the appropriate amount.
For me, I usually tip around 10% on takeout.

one could possibly also sit down and have a meal with a server then some tipping should be done. Somebody had to take time away from their other customers to pack up the order and all that. Toss in an extra $5 for the trouble at least.
Now, all the quick service places where one stands in line, tells somebody what they want, then gets their own drink and such is kinda crossing the line. I may toss in a couple bucks if I'm feeling generous, but not always.
