New Story: Commentary: Has Deshaun Watson declined from last year?

Commentary: Has Deshaun Watson declined from last year?
This past weekend I spoke with my uncle about the state of the undefeated Clemson football program. Like any die-hard Clemson fan, all his friends have blood that runs orange too, and he shared with me their concerns. He wanted to know if the statistics backed up what he saw with his eyes: Has Deshaun Watson declined from last year? Is he playing as tight as he seems? Why isn’t he running the ball as much? Should we be worried, despite having a pretty clear path to the playoff? Full Story » |

Do you think Joe Bama fan wants DW4 in CFP?

You can push All In on that one that they for sure want no part of the DW4 in January.

I sensed a "Rocky Bolboa vs Apollo Creed moment" after the natty, in that AL wanted no more of Clemson for a long time. They were very fortunate to escape with their skins and a nice trophy, but we certainly were not one of their typical opponents. Special Team's play killed us in that game, and that seems to be much improved. Look out folks! Here we come again, and I believe we have strengthened our weaknesses.

Very average compared to the rest of the nation, but rising steadily each game. Will be interesting to continue to follow.

Well that settles it , he'll just have to come back next year to improve in order to become a first round draft choice ! ??

he needs to stay until I deem him ready for the next level. Probably need to see if we can get some kind of medical redshirt for that first season since he got hurt a few times. Probably gonna take at least a couple more seasons before he's ready. just sayin...

You a are exactly right....he has no reason to come out at the end of the year...he is insured for millions of dollars so if he gets hurt he gets payed....and there is alot of money lost if he goes out of the top three in the draft...and at this time he will, so why not stay and raise your stock??

I'm in the camp with your uncle. I'm not concerned about his running at all but I don't think he's been as sharp with his passing. And I have a theory as to why that might be- he is stronger this year and that takes some adjusting.
To use a golf analogy, if you put a weaker golfer and a stronger golfer a wedge away from the green and assume both are accurate, there might be a 10-yard difference between the weaker golfers full swing and his 3/4 swing but the stronger might have a 20-yard difference. It just takes more time and practice practice to dial that in.
I expect the progress he has shown the last few games to continue but if there was no adjustment period needed, the way he finished last year should have been close to the way he ended last year, particularly giving him back Mike Williams.
Maybe it's that range of stength or that the added strength came at the expense of some tightness (other than Tiger Woods a few years ago, how many ripped golfers do you see?) but something was clearly a bit different about DW in the early games.

I differ from you, but only slightly

I agree that DW4 is bigger and stronger, but I think the problem goes back to the 1st four games when his receivers were dropping he ball (18 drops, 10 of which were for TDs). Being the kind of kid he is, Deshaun was thinking, "what am I doing wrong. These are the best receivers in the country, so it can't be them." So he starts trying to be "so precise that they can't miss the catches" and in so doing, he starts "guiding" the ball rather than "throwing" it. I saw this in his motion in the first 3 games.
Now, fast forward to games 5 and 6, especially with regard to the BC game. Take the long completion to Williams... "good" throw, "great" catch. Now the TD to Cain... again, "good" throw, "spectacular" catch. Now, all of a sudden, the receivers are doing what DW4 expects them to: he wings it, they go and catch it. This has to help Deshaun's confidence, and will let him relax and play the game he knows how to play.
I predict that we see a continuation of this in the NCSU game Saturday. I hope I'm right, and DW4 and his "great" receivers continue to click!
So, Go Tigers!

I agree. DW4 was off in the first couple of games on a few throws but the recievers were very bad for him. He was also kept in the pocket to "protect him". He plays much better when he has the ability to throw or escape. When he plays on instinct his game is great. The quick reads need to be caught by the recievers. Note the lack of play over the middle. That is a recievers issue not on Watson. That all said the recievers are starting to show up.

He's been errant at times but the o-line was shaky early and I've seen a LOT of drops on very catch-able balls. I think you will see the elite Watson emerging in the 2nd half.

Account for the early seasons drop and the Ray Ray drop that lead to a a pick and he has far better numbers than 2015 at this point in the season.

TD's if the receivers had not have dropped very "catchable" passes. Plus he has two freak interceptions that were not his fault.
He has not been as accurate on his long passes but if you look back on the past two years, it's almost like he needs a half to get dialed in.

I really like that line of thought. I thought of exploring this in the article too! Here are the numbers by quarter:
Q1: 34-61 (55.7%) Q2: 46-66 (69.7%) Q3: 25-45 (55.6%) Q4: 19-34 (55.9%)
Doesn't really show that he gets better as the game goes on, but it is important to note a few things:
-throws get much harder as the game goes on -DW4 hasn't played as much in the 4th quarter during blowouts (or has played with less experienced WRs) -Clemson has been one of the nation's best in Success Rate in the 2nd Q because of Watson finding his groove after a couple drives

I tried to look at this for the article, but the problem is that many play-by-play game logs either don't list drops or are inconsistent. Because it is subjective it is sometimes hard to quantify. Also, Watson's INT vs. Georgia Tech (which led to the safety) was the miscommunication on Watson or Williams? Always, caveats. Wish I could give you a better answer!

Receivers were not good the first 2-3 games. Dropped balls and running the wrong routes. One game, Williams ran an out on the goal line, but the route was a slant -interception. Williams failed to adjust on back shoulder throw-interception. Deon Cain-3 drops- Thompson a drop. Leggett 2 drops. Missing Renfrow. Legged and Cain dropped touchdown passes. No problem with WATSON. Deep ball-/ did you see the BC game?

and titling, so as to be sensationalistic. I thought I was getting ready to read something from AARP magazine here. Deshaun is only on the up and up as he and his O line and receivers get more and more in syn with each other. We simply don't appreciate what it takes for 11 men to forge chemistry in a violent sport, and so we have to read stuff like this.

We just need to take a step back on dw4 and realize that the play calling was extremely vanilla and we had an overhauled offensive line that still needed to mesh. Dw4's stats will get better as the year progresses. Mark my word this weekend he will put up sick and I mean sick numbers this weekend and for the rest of the season. The only thing I'm truly worried about though is #63 Hearn. He has been bear badly a lot this year. He has to step up or dw4 will not finish the season.

Has Deshaun or our offense met media/some fans expectations for this season thus far? The answer is no. Were those expectations way too high? The answer to that is yes. We've started to gel the last few weeks and Dabo showed a killer instinct I don't think I've ever seen from him last week. It could get ugly for our opponents moving forward.
Game 7 against the U was our breakout game last year. We played well up to that point, but put it all together in that game. Hopefully we can do the same with nc st. this year. We're obviously on our way to getting hot at the right time and that's all that matters. The stats will come.

I personally think TOP is going to be huge for us down the stretch. Yes we hit 6 20+ yard plays(3 50+) and that's great, and our running game got back on track, but we need to be able to pound it and take some stress off our defense. We're still struggling at times on the OL as well.(see fruhmorgen last week)
Overall as a team we haven't played our best game.

It's the eyes....
Oct 13, 2016, 9:52 AM
|
|
Like some of you die-hards, I attend every home game.....and then spend a few hours the following Sunday watching the replay on ESPN.
What I've noticed isn't so much that he's off. It's his eyes. Almost as if he's half asleep behind center. It's weird. DW4 is still amazing as an athlete and a representative of Clemson and I'll never forget the ride he's given all of us Clemson fans - but - I do sometimes wonder if he's keeping himself in the pocket in lieu of avoiding injury for the NFL.
Not that I can blame him. It just appears as if the "hunger" that I used to see in his eyes is preoccupied with something else.
I've been wrong before - I hope I am now too.
Go Tigers!
