All the more reason these players need to have contracts that extend beyond committing to school or beyond 1 regular season and should include postseason as well as practice. They want big boy money, they need real big boy contracts too.

at the top level programs but way too much money at stake for it to go anywhere. I think the viewership numbers were up quite a bit last year. People enjoy it and that won't change.

My thoughts exactly - the REAL game is like NFL FANTASY football
Apr 12, 2025, 8:01 AM

These players are plugged in and out from team to team and from week to week.
Just as FANTASY teams are created from all of the teams in the NFL, college fans will find their interests and loyalties spread across the 20 colleges that comprise their fantasy teams.
College alumni simply have no way to “connect” with players on their respective teams. Unlike the NFL, the college contract chaos has FEW RULES that can provide sane financial management for STUDENT ATHLETE team rosters and creates an even more volatile team consistency.
As said, college football has a few years left. The game will become such a secondary XFL league, it is shocking to me that the power management in college football seemingly CANNOT or WILL NOT see the road that they are taking their sport down.

Disagree my friend. No one's gonna have an allegiance or even a connection to multiple schools, let alone 20, bc of one player playing hopscotch for more money. Don't necessarily hate the NIL concept but the school jumping has got to end. Go Tigers!!!

They need to let him walk. Paid 2.4 million last year. Wants 4 million per now. Have two five star QB's now and another five star coming. He's not that good.

I was just about to post your exact sentiments.
If I'm a coach I'm asking the question " is he's a kid I want on my team"? Nope, and adios.
Sounds like UT will be all set at QB without him, and I hope they don't give him another dime.

he showed flashes last year and is your best option at QB next year. Let's be real, another $1.6M aint a problem for UT football. And he plays the most key role on the football team.

The problem Tennessee has is Nico is the glue holding together their skill position players. They already had to promise Lil Boo Carter snaps on offense (he played DB last year but is dynamic with the ball) or he was leaving. Coaches have very little leverage over guys who only play for money.

The "get rich quick" style of roster construction can seem appealing in the short term, but it does have its downsides. Maybe more people are starting to realize this. Looks as though all the sacrificing of ethics, dealing dirty, and making it all about the money may finally be catching up to Tennessee...

Tennessee is one of those schools that have gotten better at everything once they could buy a team. Don't feel sorry for them at all. They've helped create the mess that football and basketball is in. They'd be idiots to pay up. His performance was nowhere near the asking price.

Pros demand trades. Pros demaind their contracts be renegogiated. Pros say they aren't going to camp without a new contract.
The difference is, the NFL, NBA, MLB, etc. have the players be employees and the benefits and restrictions of their employment are collectively bargained.
We will be there in college football in a few years. Then, all we will have to worry about is will the players go on strike or not.
Won't it be fun when the players unions says, "We will go on strike the day before Thanksgiving if we don't get a new contract"?
Thank the NCAA for this. They wanted to become the minor league for NFL and NBA. They wanted to take recruit based purely on athletic ability with absolutely zero regard for academics, education, and graduation.
Dabo is the only coach or administrator who is showing actual concern for the education of the athletes. (I'm sure there are a few others, but he is the only voice I'm hearing speak publicly.)

…is keeping me watching the Tigers. However, as the college game metastasizes into a free-for-all-money-grab with effectively no contract rules, slowly but surely, I will be weaned off of the college game entirely.
