New Story: Swinney on perceived bias: "I didn't think I'd ever live to see that day"

Swinney on perceived bias: "I didn't think I'd ever live to see that day"

Dabo Swinney didn’t know if he would live long enough to see a national bias in favor of Clemson. Clemson jumped from No. 4 to No. 2 in the College Football Playoff rankings released Tuesday night, setting off a firestorm of outrage on social media, in print, on television and online media. It was a great question and I loved Dabo's reaction to it.

Actually, I feel like we have earned a bit of bias. We are what college football was meant to be. We have guys actually getting an education, staying out of trouble, winning big games, and graduating. Our players have good work ethics and personalities and our fans celebrate big wins by buying t-shirts, not tearing up the town. Nice to have the respect of the Committee.

Thank you Dabo.

If everyone had this type of wisdom most of these talking heads would have to get a real job like the rest of us.

“The rankings don't matter. I don't know why people get worked up about that stuff on November 15th because it's going to all play itself out,” he said. “You're going to play the games. I could see if they were going to declare a champion this Saturday. It doesn't matter. We're going to play games. We're going to play Miami. Somebody is going to lose. The game is going to go until somebody loses.

“There's not going to be a tie. All of these things work themselves out. You've got other matchups as well. That's what's great about college football, just when you think you've got it all figured out, you don't. We're just thankful we're in the hunt. We've earned it. It's not like we haven't played anybody. We've played a good schedule and we've earned it. At the end of the day, you win or you lose.”

seriously

Nov 16, 2017, 9:24 AM

This is just full-on click bait (yea, Crump and BMeist, you too!)

The media is there to stir people up so they get these reactions.

Ignore it, there is no value and it means nothing.

Right on Dabo. There are at least four games yet to be played, and, I hope, five. But if we don't win the next one, the whole outlook changes. Play ball. The heck with the rankings.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I wish he would have thorwn a "I don't give a crap" in there

Nov 16, 2017, 7:22 AM

somewhere. I loved that quote. "We don't give a crap. The game can't have enough snaps. Line up and play, that's all we are going to do". Seems fitting.

The rankings matter to teams like Coot U , Temple , Idaho , East Carolina et al ...because they never are .
If you ain't much at all , then the rankings matter

One has-been ex college QB (who I believe lost to us in 2004) is hardly a firestorm. More like he's that lone squeaky voice wanting to jump on the Clemson hater bandwagon. I say let's have a cage match between him and Finebaum, to the death.

2005 Champs Sports Bowl
Clemson 19 - Colorado 10
Colorado QB Joel Klatt Year - Sr

That 'splains things!

Once again, Dabo is right. We have played a tough schedule. When you listen to the committee chair and guys like Herbstreit who know what they are talking about, they mention Clemson has 7 wins against he FPI top 40. No other team is even close to that. Strength of schedule looks at the whole body of work not just top 15.

Yes sir, before Dabo become Clemson HC, none of us ever saw us in these type of arguments near the end of a season, NEVER. These arguments were reserved for the top teams, and we wasn't one of those teams. So I suggest just sit back and enjoy the Fun and let the pretenders argue that they are the best teams!!!

Can I get an "AMEN"!

Nov 16, 2017, 8:36 AM

Dabo is spot on. The only rankings that matter are on Dec 3. Three more weeks of action. Our Tigers need to take of business each week starting with El Cid this Saturday in the valley.

Love the comment by Dabo on bias toward Clemson. Terry Don, Dabo, his staff and Clemson Administration ALL deserve credit for the reclamation of Clemson Football. So proud to be a Tiger! Our brand is Top 5 nationally but hey we are just a little ole school from upstate South Carolina.

We've been in the last 2 national championship games...

Nov 16, 2017, 10:31 AM

and won the last one. And one guy thinks Clemson being 2 is laughable? We beat the current number 6 team this year. We beat the current number 1 team during this calendar year. The current number 4 team he thinks is so great got curb-stomped by us the last two times we played them post-season. The current number 3 team we beat 58-0 the last time we played them. But us being number 2 is laughable. That really ticked me off.

No reason to get ticked when Joel Klattrap has a brain the size of a tick.

Re: New Story: Swinney on perceived bias: "I didn't think I'd ever live to see that day"

Nov 16, 2017, 10:43 AM

For sure Dabo has it all figured out bc, he spoke the absolute truth. The best teams will usually end up playing each other, and the best teams usually come out ahead and win it all!!! Pretenders all ways end up being mad as h&ll bc they caught pretending to be what they're not. The best team won the NC in 2015, and the best team won it in 2016, and the best team will win in 2017 most likely!!!!

Based on Klattrat's thinking why doesn't he go after Alabama? They don't even have a top 15 win based on current rankings. They have #17 MS State and #21 LSU. I'd say there's some bias going on and it isn't with the Tigers.

All of these prognosticators remind me of a former research associate who said, "if we make enough assumptions, we don't have to do the research". According to these self proclaimed experts, we don't have to play the games because they can predict the outcome 100% of the time. Just imagine game day with no actual game. Fans arrive as usual for tailgating. Then off to the stadium. At 3:34 PM the experts gather on the field and give fans a play by play account of what would have occurred had there been a real live game. Rather than having to direct our boos to our opponent, players, coaches, officials and those standing up in front of us, all of our boos can be directed at the experts.

...on perceived bias: ...it should be noted...

Nov 16, 2017, 11:58 AM

Back in his playing days, Colorado was in the Big 12. His bias toward the Big 12 is obvious. His infatuation with Oklahoma (and them not being ranked higher) is evident. As Dabo has said in the past - people do not do their homework. I'll be the first to admit, the rankings don't matter. Having said that, though, think the committee got it right. In fact, they even cut Oklahoma some slack when you look at the statistics - particularly on defense - as the saying goes, 'defense wins championships'...

Of the current CFP Top 25 teams:

Oklahoma is the SECOND LOWEST (74th) in FCS for yards allowed per game, second only to Memphis...Four of the other Top-6 teams rank in the top eight in this category except for Miami (34th).

Oklahoma is LOWEST in FCS in yards per play (tied for 19th)...the other CFP Top-6 teams rank in (or tied for) the top five in this category.

Oklahoma is the THIRD LOWEST (60th) in FCS for points allowed per game ahead of Oklahoma State and Memphis...the other CFP Top-6 teams rank in the top nine in this category.

Go Tigers!! Win and in!!

I can understand OU being ahead of us, not Miami

Nov 16, 2017, 12:03 PM

OU is on a roll. Wouldn't have a problem with them being 2. The only thing Miami has over Clemson is the fact that we have the 1 loss. But line up schedule to schedule and its not even close from a resume standpoint.

Top win is basically comparable. You could make the argument that Auburn is better than ND, but no real need.

We have 4 common opponents

Miami @ FSU 4 point win with last minute TD
Clemson FSU 17 point win

Miami vs GT 1 point win FG with no time left
Clemson vs GT 14 point win. GT scored a garbage TD. We could have named the score

Miami vs Syracuse 8 point win 1 point game until TD with 2 minutes to go
Clemson @ Syracuse - 3 point loss

Miami vs VT 18 point win. Pretty much a cruise the entire time
Clemson @ VT 14 point win. VT scored garbage TD. Pretty much a cruise the entire time

So with the exception of the Cuse game, Clemson has more thoroughly dominated the common opponents.

Remaining games.
Miami - Duke/UNC/UVA/Pitt
Clemson - Louisville/Wake/BC/NCSU

Not even close. The Atlantic is 9-3 against the Coastal. And will probably be 11-3. Only NCSU/UNC and Wake/Duke left.

OOC -
Miami - Bethune Cookman, Arkansas St (cancelled), Toledo and ND
Clemson - Kent, Auburn, Citadel, South Carolina.

Comparable. Bethune Cookman=Citadel Kent=Toledo, South Carolina?
