Some quick thoughts/questions on the Mafah fumble review....

Dec 3, 2024, 10:41 AM

I went back and was able to count around 3-4 seconds AFTER the ball was snapped before the referees blew the play dead. Think about it, Cade was lined up in shotgun, the ball traveled a few yards on the snap, Cade quickly read, threw the ball numerous yards and Wesco caught the ball all before the whistles were blown. Furthermore, it's not like Clemson lined up quickly and snapped the ball. They took their time to get lined up and snapped the ball for the next play as if they believed it wouldn't be reviewed. How many times have we seen teams try to get the snap off as quick as possible in hopes that they "beat" the replay officials to buzz down to the on-field crew?

This leads me to ask, was the on-field ref crew ALL zoned out for a few seconds allowing the play to happen if they were paged prior to the ball getting snapped? Or was the crew paged after the ball was snapped and they made a judgment call to blow it dead after the fact? I really think they were paged after the snap and chose to not ignore the buzz from the replay official. Either way, it's a travesty and a huge mistake by the entire crew.

The issue that no one (outside of the crew) will definitively know is WHEN they were actually buzzed by the replay official...and we'll never know.

Clearly there were other issues that contributed to Clemson losing the ball game (including this trick play attempt when the drive was rolling) but I think this situation was handled very poorly by the crew.

Anyone else feel similar? Different?

Haha yeah, this is all about what happened after the failed trick play...

I agree there are a lot of questions about this play and review. At this point it is what is though. We should have never been in the situation to have to drive down the field to win or tie the game. The coaches let the fans down and some of the players. Some players made business decisions on the defense. That doesn't sit well with me. If you are afraid to hit or tackle, don't play football or don't play defense.

I think it’s BS. The refs are disrupting the flow of football games, not just Clemson, but in other games too. With the million dollars that college football generates, why can’t we get refs worth a crap. They don’t have the same issues in the NFL. Why can’t college football get better refs?

I agree...officiating at the P5 level is garbage...

every P5 conference needs to go to the NFL and just do what they do for the sake of the game. No reviewing anything unless its a challenge or within last 2 minutes/scoring play.

And get rid of targeting. Just call unsportsmanlike conduct if its intentional...like the TL hit in the NFL the other day. And call low blows to a QB or roughing passer like you already do.

But reviewing all the other crap..catch/no catch/fumble, etc....leave that up to challenges.

The NFL has full-time referees. College football does not.
