My welcome to College Cheerlading moment!

In honor of David Hood’s article about welcome to college football, I submit with tongue somewhat planted in cheek, my welcome to College Cheerleading Moment! I was not involved in any extra curricular activities and wanted to have more of a college experience. First I tried rugby. If you’ve never watched a rugby match, they start play with a scrum where if you’re the 2nd or 3rd row you basically have to put your head between 2 guys butts! Well they never let me run the ball and while I liked tackling people, I got tired of sticking my head between 2 guys butts! So I said I’ll try this cheerleading thing. Holy cow! There were like 400 girls out there and maybe 20 of us guys. The varsity girls who taught us to stunt were so nice and drop dead gorgeous! The first time they taught me to do a chair seat (where you throw the girl in the air and you catch them on your hand) I was like, “you want me to do what?” While trying to play it cool. I had no clue what all those arm motions meant or why they had to to do them and I really sucked at that part. The girls were howling with laughter at guys who had never done the arm motions and we laughed along with them in good fun. But I took to the stunting very rapidly. If you wrestled in high school and worked out a lot you can learn to stunt easier in my opinion. Kind of like Grady Jarrett wasn’t the biggest d-lineman but he wrestled so he learned leverage and body control. Anyway I didn’t make it the first time but I tried out again and made it. Even though I was the smallest guy (5 of the guys were over 6 feet 200 lbs), none would argue that I wasn’t the best stunter. Word got out that I was the best stunter and when I was on the varsity squad there would be like 100 girls trying to stunt with me. That was an awful great boost to the old ego let me tell you! I spent too much time stunting and never could learn the arm motions so I wrote them on a piece of paper and taped them to my partners back!
Those were different times as our squad was so big when we went to the away games and arrive at the hotels, people thought we were the football team. We said “no we are the cheerleaders”, and they were like, “Dang, I’d hate to see the football team! “
The girls on the squad ended up being more like sisters and you had more of a love/hate relationship with them and not really attracted to them. So when you see a guy cheerleader holding up his partner and he has to look up or she will fall and get injured, he’s not really thinking, “oh I get to look up her skirt..” it’s more like, “this beach went downtown last night and I’m having to work harder to keep her upright!” And it is a freaking workout in the sun! When you go work out, you may lift weights for an hour or so. Think about the Football games, you’re out there for 4 hours lifting the whole time in the sun!
But I had a blast and wouldn’t trade that experience for anything!

Any really embarrassing moments during a game, I mean between you and the gals? A drop? A butt in the face?

Not really, that was more in practice, as in only well polished stunts
