My Thoughts

Sep 5, 2021, 8:53 AM

I know that I am the recruiting guy but thought I would share a few things.

-First, the defense played phenomenal. BV answered all the questions from the OSU game where the defense got dragged all over the field. Breese is as advertised and Ruke and Tre played great in TD's absence. Andrew Booth is insane, UGA never threw his way and the only times they did he blew the play up. I think the most underrated player on the team is, and has been, Spector. He had another great game and of course Skalski played like we all knew he would. Freshman safety Mukuba was a star for me. I loved him when we were recruiting him out of Texas, and man he did not miss a tackle or blow an assignment all game. All in all, what more can you say than your heart hurts for the defense, they played so hard and so well all night that they deserved to win.

-Now to the bad, I do not think that I am going to blow anyone's mind when I say the offensive scheme was bad, I mean bad. DJ did not play well, he admitted that, he looked nervous and was seeing ghost all night. However, almost every pass was a 5 step drop with long developing routes. I have had several people tell me during Trevor's years that he was so elite he could cover up the blah play calling. DJ is elite but his first real start with a packed house was against the best defense in the country. He was not able to cover it up last night. I did not think his pocket presence was great at all, lanes opened up to scramble all night and he did not take them. I think he learns from that. Dj has one of the strongest arms in the world but the more I watch college football the less I think arm talent matters. It is about scheme and WRs getting yards after catch with a very accurate QB. Burrow nor Mac Jones the past two years have anywhere near the arm strength DJ has, but they are each way more accurate. Just something I have noticed, that is why I am so excited about Cade....

-The offense gave up somewhere around 8 sacks and I would say they are to blame for half of them while DJ and the scheme are to blame for the second. I thought the OL was serviceable in pass pro. Several times DJ just held onto the ball too long. However, the OL was once again dominated in the run game. No push for any of the backs to go anywhere. You could tell Lyn J was the experienced guy used to the horrible OL blocking because his first run he bounced outside because he knew he was not going to be able to run up the middle.

-I agree with Kirk from the game broadcast that we missed a slot receiver last night. Most of our receivers look the exact same. With that said great game by Ngata, I have been so high on him since he was a recruit and he made some contested catches and played physical all night. Ladson was nonexistence, and do not get me started on Galloway.

-Let me make another observation, the offense lacks a vocal leader. The communication and energy from the defense with Skalski and Breese was evident. When Dj threw the pick six it was Sklaski, not someone from the offense, that went over to him. DJ is not a vocal guy, he is much more like his mom and very quiet than his father, and that is a good thing. However, someone from the offense is going to have to stand up.

Win, lose, or draw

Go Tigers!!!

Thanks, CP.

I was present in 1981 when we basically won in the same way, great defense. Even though we lost this battle, seeing the defense play old school, hard nosed ball was refreshing. Makuba (from here in Austin) is a stud. DL depth is there. Agree with all you said about defense. Love it!

Folks may think that I am crazy, but last year's absence of Luke Price correlates, somewhat, to the running game being sub-par. I don't know if he played, but why not utilize a blocking TE more to get the running game going? Minnesota just put more linemen in the H position Thursday night. Dabo said that there were ways to engineer a running game. Uhh ... I didn't see any engineering last night. It is obvious that good teams are figuring out Elliot's offense. That is concerning.

Things will get better, I know it. It was a tough way to start and Georgia won the test. I think when UGA puts up a lot of points this season (we hope) it will make last night's game more relevant regarding our abilities. Long season ahead. Fix it and win games.

Go Tigers!

Perfect analysis. Mr. Vanilla Elliott is far too predictable as even the announcers mentioned it. Big Cinco was Big Stinko. Amazing how the announcers saw how quickly the QB was getting rid of the ball because of our pass rush but somehow it never dawned on our coaches or QB. And yet we were right there in a position to win. There is hope.

110% true on the vocal leader. Didn’t even think of that!

Great analysis. Way overlooked is the fact that it now seems like all the receivers we are bringing in are the 6’3” types and look and play all the same. We need one, two, or more of the Scott, Rodgers, Renfrows as slot receivers. Maybe Stellato will fit that bill. Of course last night our scheme, pass protection, and QB decision making would have made that a moot point. Our TE’s were less than impressive.

Dittos on the QB’s arm strength. Timing and anticipation are at least as important and none of that was there last night. Lots of work to do, but I suspect we will see huge improvements in weeks to come.

We'll see improvement no doubt. Unfortunately we'll need some help from other teams to get to the cfp. Because sadly we won't play another respected opponent unless a Fla St or a Pitt can step up and shock some people.

Miami considered the 2nd, maybe 3rd best ACC team and it was obvious from the go the talent gap with Bama. Hopefully uga does to their schedule what we should do to our remaining schedule...

Don’t sleep on BC. Pretty sure they will be the second highest ranked ACC team this year, maybe even top 10.

Good assessment as usual. We missed spec in the slot no doubt. Not having a viable option and alternative plan is on coaches. Same with TE's. I know it's a big debate with varying opinions but nothing wrong with bringing in a transfer. Doesn't mean said transfer automatically gets to play. But it's nice to have options.

People aren't going to like the hit we'll take from the pundits but Kirk does know football, and I find his analysis pretty much spot on. I'd love to hear an unbiased assessment breakdown of our plays. Used to be a guy that did that a few years back. He'd break down the film of each game. Very informative.

The lack of leadership struck me last night as well. DJ looked more the part of a hired hand rather than a supervisor. He’ll grow a lot this year, methinks.

Well said, I’m begrudgingly looking forward to the replay to seeing how the game looked versus watching it live.

Like every prime time game, it was stop-start and the whole vibe/rhythm just felt off. For instance the 10 minutes they took to replay the muff while blasting 4 Non Blondes did not keep the crowd pumped. Same with the great defensive stops, only to get the ball back with crappy field position.

Felt like DJ was shook. They pushed the pocket up the middle and their LBs and ends whipped our Tackles, they definitely let the CB’s jam and play physical. A couple sacks were completely on DJ where he just took way to long and has to get it away.

There were a couple balls that DJ smartly just threw away but he didn’t fire it into the sideline, it just looked like a really off target throw, so the crowd got him on him for those, but if he was more blatant the intent would have been clearer.

Ngata- Loved to see a great game from him.

Mukuba- Thought he tackled well and was a relative bright spot, all things considered.

Neither of those offenses are beating Bama. At least UGA gets some significant firepower back with pickins Washington etc…

Transfer Portal- depth was clearly stressed in this one. Getting 1-3 guys who can not only fill the spots we lose to portal attrition, but to beef up thin areas is going to be crucial. Unfortunately, I don’t see any way to compete for the top 4 consistently if we are only losing players to transfer. Wonder if this will help change Dabo’s stance next year?

All in all. Great weather. Fun game. Bummer outcome. Definitely did not walk out feeling like a 1 score loss.

When is the sub par o line play

Sep 5, 2021, 11:23 AM

gonna be unacceptable?
Something has to change. Can't recruit as well as we do and not see improvements.
