WAPO retracts story about yet another trump hoax

Mar 15, 2021, 1:50 PM

Lol. It’s honestly laughable that so many people believe anonymous source quotes from leftist websites that wish trump harm. I mean how many times will some people fall for this garbage before they realize?

Which story?

Mar 15, 2021, 1:56 PM

And haven't you fallen for about a dozen false or misleading stories over the past few years?

A dozen false stories? Huh? There was one that I was wrong about regarding the Coca Cola training. It was more misleading than outright false.

I definitely haven’t been on the wrong side as much as you have. Anything that puts Trump in a negative light you believe instantly. It’s quite funny and also sad.

Also the thing about these retractions 2 months later is they don’t get nearly the attention that the original article. It’s all a part of the plan with the media.

The Coke one was pretty embarrassing and one of many where you were duped, including the ones that have you believing the Deep State.

What "retractions" are you referring to? Are you sure they just aren't corrections? You know there's a difference in those two, right?

Are you talking about the one that Hillary a d the DNC paid a company to dig up fake dirt on trump and then weaponized the CIA and FBI to oust trump?

How did I mischaracterize “opposition research” are you saying nothing nefarious went on?

It’s one thing to conduct opposition research and come back with true info that damages a candidate.

It’s another thing when the opposition research is lies and you use the FBI and CIA to help spread those lies to oust a duly elected president.

Actually it is not true.

That "dirty dossier" you so often refer to actually originated as oppo research generated by Republican opponents of Trump's during the Republican Primary.

Fusion GPS just sold it again to Hillary because, you know, capitalism.

That is completely untrue and you are lying. Republican website who backed rubio did hire fusion GPS to dig up opposition research. That had nothing to do with steele’sreporting. Steele wasn’t even involved at all when the Republican website paid for opposition research. Steele was hired shortly after Hillary and DNC paid fusion GPS.

The fact that they print retractions is what gives

media outlets like the Washington Post credibility. Conservatives seem to have a hard time comprehending how journalism works. I've heard this "anonymous sources" complaint so many times that I have to think people deliberately misunderstand what it means.

Mar 15, 2021, 2:31 PM

Her degree is from Grady College of Journalism at UGA. She also worked in that field for 7 years before leaving to raise out childrens.

True journalism is dead. Been dead for a while.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: My wife disagrees with your assessment.

Mar 15, 2021, 2:38 PM

Well, if we're comparing sheepskins, I have a journalism degree from a school that ranks higher than UGA's.

Journalism isn't "dead," and your wife is wrong if that's the opinion she holds. Does it have many problems? Yes. Is the race to get clicks one of those problems? Absolutely. Especially on a local news level.

But that's not how the industry works by any means. There is still a strong adherence to facts and good reporting by the trustworthy institutions, and two of those are the WaPo and AP, two that have been falsely criticized today as not falling into that category.

If we want to examine all that's wrong with CNN, Fox, and MSNBC, I'm sure you, your wife, and I could have a field day on that. But not with the reputable sources that still practice great journalism--especially if they're behind a paywall. There's a reason they are behind that paywall.

Re: My wife disagrees with your assessment.

Mar 15, 2021, 2:45 PM

Yeah, one of the big problems is there's less of an incentive for investigative journalism. It's a lot cheaper to just wait for someone else to run a story then quickly write up your own summary. The more pertinent issue for this thread is that anonymous sources are crucial for real journalists. If sources can't trust that they won't be outed, you'll never get someone to turn over anything critical about their employer/administration. I know I've seen people make this point over and over, not sure why anyone doesn't get it.

How do people manage to be upset by this?

Mar 15, 2021, 2:32 PM

They corrected the actual quotes once they got the recording. Does this in any way change the fact that he was pressuring officials in Georgia to change their election results? If you're arguing semantics, you're conceding the actual argument.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

So it's a correction and not a retraction.

Mar 15, 2021, 2:41 PM

How hard is it for people to link to whatever the #### they're talking about?

https://www.foxnews.com/media/washington-post-correction-trump-georgia-votes-election

Anyway...

"Correction: Two months after publication of this story, the Georgia secretary of state released an audio recording of President Donald Trump’s December phone call with the state’s top elections investigator. The recording revealed that The Post misquoted Trump’s comments on the call, based on information provided by a source. Trump did not tell the investigator to "find the fraud" or say she would be "a national hero" if she did so. Instead, Trump urged the investigator to scrutinize ballots in Fulton County, Ga., asserting she would find "dishonesty" there. He also told her that she had "the most important job in the country right now." A story about the recording can be found here. The headline and text of this story have been corrected to remove quotes misattributed to Trump."

So a source told them what was said on the call and now they've got the exact wording because they found a recording and they corrected the story. We're supposed to interpret this as bad reporting.

Mar 15, 2021, 2:48 PM

I also love how their mentality works.

Reputable source makes a mistake. Runs correction like they're supposed to, further proving they're reputable.

People like CM: "LOL Lamestream media! You know, I never have to hear any corrections from washingtonexaminedeeznutslittlegreenfootballstheMAGADailyTimes . com. They tell me lizard people run the Deep State! Prove em wrong! Can't do it, huh?!"

Re: Yep. Poor Mountaineers doesn't know what a "retraction" is

Mar 15, 2021, 3:19 PM

I posted this earlier - in response to another thread, but I think it applies here as well.

There is an dilemma here that rears its head on more issues than just this. This is an observation of mine that is certainly open to scrutiny.

It seems to me that conservatives/reactionaries operate more on a concrete level. They seem much more comfortable with definitive, immutable (right) answers. They seem to struggle with ideas that are dynamic and/or fluid. The concept that our understanding of Covid is constantly changing (based on new evidence) is, to them, evidence of a wrong answer.

Again, this observation is not limited to Covid. I find it a consistent thread in many of our arguments here.
