My Experience with Wes Goodwin

I wanted to share my experience meeting Wes Goodwin during his time at Clemson. I had the chance to talk with him once, and while we didn’t discuss much football X&Os, it was clear that he’s very sharp in those areas and has a strong understanding of the strategic side of the game.
He struck me as a soft-spoken and reserved. He avoided making eye contact and would look away when you looked in his direction. I remember him looking at me a few times and when I looked back at him he would look away and down. I also remember one instance where he asked Dabo for permission give a recruit and his family a tour of the facility. Dabo gave him the go-ahead in a casual, automatic way. It almost seemed unnecessary, but then again I don’t know protocols there.
While his intelligence and knowledge were there, I questioned his ability to energize and inspire players on the field. Every coach has their own strengths and style, and Wes’ seemed to lean more toward strategy than fiery motivation.
He has a great mind for the game (I believe he started out coaching softball, so he has a natural mind for sports) and I’m sure he will do well wherever he goes. Best of luck to him and his family.

Seems he was in the perfect spot before being promoted to DC.

'Motivation' is a necessary part of the skill set.
I know extremely intelligent people who lack common sense & maturity or have social limitations that prevent their success.

Something I’ve always noticed with Wes.. in any interview with the media, his voice has always sounded shakey and nervous. It was even worse his first year, somewhat understandable. But didn’t get much better this past year.

Introverts can have a tougher time of it ...

Particularly in a high profile role. Both Goodwin and Riley seem to be introverts - with Riley handling his business much better with direct and dry interviews.
Likely a big reason Coach Swinney minimized press access to coordinators.

Doubt the assistants personality’s have anything to do with Dabo’s limiting their exposure. Dabo wants to control the narrative and enjoys the spotlight. Part of his magic but let’s not pretend otherwise.

When we were watching the Texas game the other day I commented to my husband that Sark’s facial expressions stay the same most of the time during the game. I’ve seen other coaches like this also. Then you have the ones like Dabo and Shane on the other end showing all emotions. I feel sure if I coached I would be like Dabo. Everything shows on my face 😆. I would prefer someone in the middle of those two types. Calm but can be fiery at times.
