CU still requires MMR for students attending. Curious how this came about (not vaccinated, non-responder to the vaccine, etc.)

There was a small outbreak in the Charleston area

a month or so ago that was mostly CofC students. Reading an article about it i learned that CofC students can opt out of all of those "required" vaccinations simply by signing a sheet of paper. I don't know if Clemson has a similar policy.
I really don't like this anti-vaccination movement. Herd immunity is a very real thing and i believe parents that refuse to have their children vaccinated not only put them in unnecessary danger, but also increase the risk of those around them as well.

I agree 100%, and it's a fact that by having those vaccinations back in the day when those viruses were plentiful, and I guess those vaccinations save many of lives back in those days, and the one that I remember the most, was the Polio vaccination, and it left most of us with that dime size scar on our upper arm, and we had to wear a shield over it to keep Gnats and Flies off of it bc they would cause it to get infected!!! We had to have our vaccinations before starting school, and bc my birthday was in late November, I couldn't start school until I was 7, so I guess I had all my shots or vaccinations in 1958-59, and I remember that Polio vaccination like it was yesterday. I seen how the kids in line before me were screaming, and it took my mom and two nurses to hold me down for that one vaccination, but I don't remember if it hurt or not, bc I was struggling like it was life or death, and I do remember that part of it well!!!

My exact thought. I’d like for them to publicly state if the student had been vaccinated. As we are now learning that some vaccines don’t provide lifetime protection and a booster is needed, it’s important to understand what happened here. Not just for our students, but also the entire community.

All these types of illnesses haven't been around for a long time until recently when the heavy influx of illegals/non citizens sneak through the borders without any screening. They are bound to bring all kinds of new and old diseases with them. This not racist statement for all you LIB's so calm down! Just common cents.

I guess they make as good a scapegoat as any. I know your point is that we shouldn't let them in in the first place...but I think that's like pretending all teen births could be stopped if we only preach abstinence. It's absolutely true, but we ALL know it's not a practical solution.
Politics aside, I tend to give those folks a pass since many come from areas of the world where the infrastructure and education just isn't there to support widespread immunization. The real problem are the idiots here in the US that have lost their #### minds...absolutely no excuse to not get immunized.

When I got the mumps in the late 50's momma didn't even take me to the doctor, just rode it out. We never even had a reporter come to get the story. It may explain my mental problems, but that was probably the scarlet fever, which after a couple of days in isolation wasn't much worse than the mumps. German measles was the worst. I'd defiantly gets shots to avoid the life experience except once you have them you're immune. I'm not so trusting of medical people, they tend to get you on medicine that later turns out to have terrible side effects. They say (I don't know this) that Quakers don't have down syndrome children because they don't take shots.

Sixty four years ago I got mumps near the end of my freshman year at Clemson. I was sent to the infirmary and missed all my exams. I took the exams later at the professors' homes. Oh, the memories.

I would opine that any lower rate of down's or other disorders is more closely tied to the age of the mother...but many others factors at play as well.

I had them when I was about 6 or 7, not worried catching any mumps anymore, but I do feel for the ones that get them, bc the wrong type of food or drink can cause those glands on both sides of the throat to hurt like h e l l, especially anything with a vinegar base will be regrettable!!!
