Mike Leach won't be eligible to enter the College Football

Dec 13, 2022, 11:40 AM

Hall of Fame because of a rule change a few years ago by the National Football Foundation that runs the Hall of Fame. The rule they enacted states that a coach must have a career 60 % winning percentage and Leach , though he won 158 games , comes up just short of the rule with a .596 winning percentage. From what I gave read about the Foundation they are steadfast about this rule .I became aware of the rule after reading complaints that Howard Schnellenberge was ineligible for entry into the Hall since his winning percentage was .514.Frank Howard wouldn't have gotten in under that rule. His percentage was .580. Both Leach and Schnellenberger took head coaching jobs at schools that had didn't have great winning traditions . In Schnellenberg's case he arrived at Miami and Louiville when both programs were on the ropes . Miami was considering shutting the program down. It will be interesting to see if someone makes the case to the Foundation that they should just round up Leach's percentage from .596 to .600 but so far they have been strict about these things since the rule change.

I understand why they made the rule, but it also sucks because it such an arbitrary number. Coaches that drag floundering programs out of their depths shouldn’t be penalized for doing so. In fact, they should be celebrated MORE than those that found themselves at top tier programs immediately.
Example: Kirby Smart. Yes he got them to a NC, but he didn’t build UGA. He started off with a ton of history and talent.

How in the world did that deserve a TD?

The way I understood it the Foundation made the rule change because there were so many coaches that had a shot at induction. There were so many they seemed to come up with this cut-off point to exclude a lot of them .Schnellenberger gets nailed by the rule change. His winning % was .514 with a record of 158 - 151 but he raised Miami and Louisville from the dead and created the Florida Atlantic program from scratch. One national championship and he was 6 - 0 in bowl games .

Exactly.. If Ryan Day kept OSU between 7-8 wins a year for the next decade, does that make him HOF worthy? Tommy Bowden kept us at 9-3 or so - I will always appreciate what he did for us, but should he be in there? But drag a program up from the gutter, you're going to have a couple 4-8 or 5-7 years. Why should that count against you?

Just because romanticizing the Tommy Bowden era is one of my biggest peeves I have to point out that he won 9 games a whopping total of three times in a decade. And never won a game more. He was a lousy coach. Much like Brownell, our fanbase developed Stockholm Syndrome or simply had mass hallucinations. Also contrary to urban legend his recruiting classes were usually terrible. Twice last or next to last in the ACC. Everything worked out in the long run but he is owed absolutely nothing.

It’s more complicated than that.
Bowden also had an administration that was hostile towards the football program as a holdover from the Ford years.
He was the first to come in and note that a big stadium /= good facilities.

Our recruiting under him started to pick up as we improved things, and recruiting high character guys that graduate started under him.

His teams were up and down for sure, but he was a key step in us getting to where we are now IMHO.

I would be more sympathetic to this argument if I didn’t watch his teams actively regress throughout the season. He could also get his guys up and win one of two biggest games of the year but couldn’t get their heads in the game against Duke, Wake Forest, or Boston College when it actually mattered. That argument would also hold more water if Boston College and Wake (who inarguably had less of everything Tommy had) hadn’t managed to win the division when Tommy couldn’t.

As for recruiting, the 2004 class was 53rd in the country. It did begin an upward trajectory in the year’s after that. But it would be hard to separate whether that was facilities or the presence of a certain future head coach.

Ok, but do you really think of him as a hall of fame coach? I sure don’t.

Yes... Maybe take a look at his 'coaching tree'. Definitely.***

13 of Leach's wins were against SEC opponents which should count as two...this will allow him to be admitted.

Stupid rule. A coaches career should be evaluated on the difficulty of the situation.
