Names and symbols

Jun 10, 2020, 11:59 AM

I have been reading and not commenting, but thought I would throw my 2 cents in. As a 57 yr old white male who has been in corporate America since high school, I have seen this cycle a few times. I just wish that there would be more focus on actions instead of symbolism. Yes, the names of buildings, the selections of flags and statues, etc., can be somewhat important. But symbols seem to become more of the focus than real change. A "conversation" needs to include all stakeholders. When some say "we need a conversation", they really mean "you need to shut up and listen to me". Like it or not, America's business is business. Capitalism is the engine that feeds EVERYTHING else. These "conversations" between the government, special interest groups, and non profit organizations are interesting, but real change will happen when solutions include those that can implement change. Incentives, enterprise investment zones, and other tools to bring REAL jobs and REAL education to under served communities are what is needed. "Protests" that glorify destruction of property and businesses (particularly those businesses that try to serve these communities)are simply not productive. In short - the symbols always seem to be the focus, because it is so easy to change them. In the end - it means nothing in terms of solving the problem. Just my 2 cents...

until we can get the family unit whole again by having

Jun 10, 2020, 12:24 PM

men becoming real men by being leaders and roll models for our kids, then nothing will change. It is happening with all races with the breakdown of integrity, honesty and respect for others. You can see it all over the internet, in the schools, and in places of business. If not, then the kids look to athletes, actors, musicians and older kids to fill the void. Are these the kind of people that we want our children turning to for "life advice"? The cycle must be broken or this country is doomed. No amount of money or special program will fix this problem.

I really don't see families ever becoming whole until our state and local Government give parent back total control of raising their kids with discipline that has worked for hundreds of years as it even states in the bible, and without the constant threats by the kids calling the police on their parents that causes parents to fear losing their kids or going to jail that leads to, Sparing the rod bc of force from local government that has allows kids to do as they please, when they please without corrective discipline from their parents, bc parents now fear the consequences from police and family court. Either action at times causes a parent to lose their kids and their jobs bc of the actions of police and family court.

maybe in a few isolated cases, but the reality is that Dad

Jun 10, 2020, 1:00 PM

is not around, not interested or is dealing with issues( drug addiction, anxiety, depression, anger issues, prior abuse of themselves, etc.) Moms can hold it together to an extent if the values of being a good person and citizen are being taught and received, but they can NEVER be Dad. And they shouldn't have to! That is what makes Dabo soooooooo special is that he takes that role for so many of these guys, or at least becomes an extension of what they did have at home.

If changing the symbols is so easy then why not go for it? It might make more of a difference than you think. I appreciate your thoughtful message.

Not opposed to changing the symbols ! but it needs to be followed up with actions that cause results - not just the "feel good"stuff that we see time and time again

that is my stance...

I have no problem changing, but let's not just make a symbolic move. Let's talk about what it means to change it and take substantive action to move forward.

If what has been said about Ben Tillman, he was a terrible man that should have been jailed for life. And I really don't want to hear that it was OK in those times bc, killing of another humman being is wrong, and just bc the killer has money, it don't make it right and they should be severely punished for their action of taking something they can never give back, a life is gone forever after it dies or has been taken/killed/murdered!!!!

One of the first stories in the book I'm working on is "WAR IS H**L). This is one of the paragraphs in this story and it alludes to the magnitude of the problem we have in obtaining a true peace.

"We strive for and pray for peace throughout the world even though we recognize there are some things beyond the control of those who truly seek peace. We ponder the magnitude of our task when we observe a small unit, such as a family, involved in violence on a daily basis. Our courts are filled with cases where neighbor rises up against neighbor to inflict bodily harm. Although we may consider our task of achieving peace to be a hopeless endeavor, this is one fight we cannot abandon".
