Jun 8, 2015, 4:22 PM

Just passing along what I am hearing....if he was contacted about the baseball opening he would be interested and would talk to them, but from everything I am hearing he hasn't been contacted as of yet. Just passing info along to you

This is interesting. Thanks David. Any word from the Monte Lee camp?

I've heard that Monte is being pushed by baseball people across the state because of his reputation, but no word yet on Clemson's interest in Lee. Still digging

I wish I did..I feel like there is a lot of misinformation out there and it's kind of different from a football search.

time of year... well, if you're not coaching baseball, timelines are always fun because you can work backwards in some cases.

anyway, thanks dhood.

If DRad is waiting on the CWS to end before we hear anything, that means it will be worth the wait IMO.

at least for some "serious" interviews. if those guys that

Jun 9, 2015, 9:22 AM

have it good already[nice jobs, good school support] are listening in earnest[not out of courtesy only], then drad's selling something worth listening to...

i imagine that includes ways clemson will close the gap in moneys, facilities, planned commitment going forward... cu may never spend what some of the programs do, but cu might have to make a huge salary investment and jump to send the message to everyone involved "we're in the game".

I've heard it both ways - I've heard that it went down exactly like Fitt said it did and I've also heard there is a different narrative from people I trust. Only two people know for sure.

If LeCroy would be interested...

Jun 8, 2015, 4:39 PM

Doesn't that mean that other Jack Leggett protégés might also be open to coming back to Clemson? Obviously, some are in very good positions now and probably aren't interested. But you indicated in an earlier article that candidates from "Leggett's coaching tree" wouldn't be interested because of "the way the was dismissed from Clemson." I'm not trying to call you out, David, but what does this do to the list of potential candidates?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Matthew played for Jack, but they aren't particularly close.

Re: Matthew LeCroy

Jun 8, 2015, 4:40 PM

I can't imagine that they would contact him. He, like McMillon, has zero experience with the college recruiting game, zero connection to high school coaches, etc. I don't see the point of bringing somebody in from the pro game UNLESS he has the sort of name recognition that would attract players. Lecroy would not be a draw to anybody but the old guard that saw him play. He might well make a great coach, but college baseball involves a heck of a lot more than that.

HENCE WHY ANY NEW GUY SHOULD KEEP LECROY. BRADLEY WOULD BE THE RECRUITING GUY.

Re: Matthew LeCroy

Jun 8, 2015, 4:51 PM

A valid point, and I am not discounting the possibility of B. Lecroy being retained. But, if you keep B. Lecroy, what have you gained by adding M. Lecroy, other than the fact that he's a "Clemson Guy?" It would seem to me that it would make more sense to get someone else that can help you on the recruiting trail (and coach/manage) AND keep B. Lecroy. But, that should be the new coach's call, and must would probably prefer to bring in their own guys.

You'd get a coach with great experience as a professional pitching coach, as well as someone who probably could improve our hitting.

It is a valid point mentioned below that you keep Bradley LeCroy as your ace recruiter, but just bc he hasnt had recruiting experience doesnt mean he cant do it.

He has been successful managing A and AA ball in the pros and is part of a solid MLB franchise. I would say he knows a thing or two about baseball and coaching. He basically managed a college team for 4 years in the minors (given most are 18-25 years old) and was successful in doing so.

Im not sure how it would all translate to college and if college experience is required, but I'd think LeCroy would have a plan and know exactly what he's doing. Besides, he's from SC, was a superstar at Clemson and played 7 years in the MLB. If he wants to talk to a kid or go into a school, people will listen.

Re: Matthew LeCroy

Jun 8, 2015, 5:07 PM

I'm not disputing any of that. But, you can go with somebody with experience and proven results, or somebody who's an unknown. Personally, I'd take the proven commodity, and most AD's would do the same thing. DRad is not likely to stick his neck out for somebody without some sort of college track record, be it high level D1 or mid-major. The only program I can think of that did something similar was Nebraska when it hired Darren Erstad. Even then, he spent a year learning the college ropes as a volunteer assistant before he got the head coaching job. The only other one I can think of is Gaylord Perry who was the first head coach at Limestone, a low level D2. There may be others, but it's pretty rare.

I agree completely...

Jun 9, 2015, 9:15 AM

you go after a proven D-1 coaches first. If it came down to LeCroy after being turned down by a few of the top choices then I believe it could work out.

I wish there was more info out there on the coaching search.

Re: Matthew LeCroy

Jun 8, 2015, 8:17 PM

1. Did Matthew ever complete his CU degree?if not, stop reading here.

2. I think his lack of experience at college level and recruiting is being over blown.

A) he was helluva hitter.
B) he was a catcher and they make great managers.
C) Also spent time at 1b so infield experience.
D) recently bullpen coach with nationals so has to know a thing or 2 about pitching as well.

Name me another candidate with those credentials. Like all good coaches/managers, he could step in and coach any position on the field.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Have you seen the quality of the Nationals bullpen?

Jun 8, 2015, 9:38 PM

He hasn't exactly done an impressive job there.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Have you seen the quality of the Nationals bullpen?

Jun 8, 2015, 10:35 PM

Your ignorance is showing. He's not the pitching coach. He's the bullpen coach. He is responsible for managing the relievers as they warm up, communicate with the bench, etc. Though I am sure he does offer instruction the pitching staff is not his.

If they are looking at possibly interviewing LeCroy and he already has an MLB job, do you think they have given any consideration to Tim Teufel?
