Updates remind me of a time before smart phones existed and sitting in Death Valley and waiting to hear the announcers reading off the current scores of the days football games and the load cheers when the coots score was announced and they were losing to who ever they were playing that day, which were most teams back then. Those were the days, living in the moment, now everything is in the palm of your hands.

Sitting in the crowd at Augusta and watching for scores to be posted is a tournament within a tournament. I hope they never take down the manual boards.

For years, I worked scoreboards at the Masters.
My last post was the large one facing 18 green. People would come, stake out their spot and sit for hours, before a group would come thru. We got in trouble a couple of times (warned to never do it again) . Before any group was close to 18 - we would put up a quick fake number and the crowd would react, then we would quickly fix it. This was back in late 70s and early 80s. They would escort us off if we did it today.

allowed and how that keeps everyone engaged. Multiple times, coverage cut to the manual scoreboards when scores were posted and showed the gallery's reaction. The Masters will never go digital or allow phones.

I agree on keeping them. My only issue is that there are a lot of places where you can’t really read one without binoculars, especially double digit numbers. Maybe they could quietly replace them with bigger ones in the same style. Money certainly isn’t an issue.
