It would be wrong to demote Shipley who couldn’t play yesterday due to concussion protocol. I want a one-two punch no matter who the starter is.

due to injury" mantra. Some combinations just work better than others. And, sometimes it takes injuries for those combinations to be put on the field. If Shipley and Mafah were truly always 1 and 1A, then the designations at least should be reversed off Mafah's performance Saturday. If Shipley has to "play from behind", maybe that will give him a new perspective, and he can not make it all about him going forward.

Well if you truly want a 1 2 punch. Then it should be Mafah, Shipley in that order.

has to be a legit reason that Ship started all year and Mafah came out blasting at the first opportunity. Oh, I'm not complaining or attempting to insult PM in the least.
Perhaps, Mafah hasn't been performing in practice as well as he did this week while knowing he got the start.
Then there's that fumble mess. If you notice the article featuring his picture carrying the ball show that his hand is not on the tip of the ball. IDN what his fumble per carry ratio is but maybe that's a stat that needs attention.
A reasonable and objective man will try and understand why Ship started and Mafah served a secondary role. That's all I'm doing.
You got to respect the product PM put on the field.

If im reading the game logs right, PM had fumbled once before yesterday (didn’t lose possession). WS has fumbled twice, and lost one.

I have to wonder about that fumble late. I saw that his hand and tbe ball were lower in tbe 4th qt than in tbe 1st half. He had 36 carries yesterday. Fatigue was an issue. Facts are tbat for some reason the team functioned better with him in than it has all year with Shipley. The numbers show that as well. Shipley has a role in this offense, but it's not as tbe feature back. But as has been all year, everyone on here will see when tbey pit Shipley back in as #1 on Saturday. Slow learners!!

I wondered as the season was going, why why why was the RB usage so inconsistent.
You have Shipley with the McCaffery vibes (not the speed) and TBH the Riley offense should utilize that skillset, but what about Mafah? I think they just didn't know what he could do. Now you do.
I was reminded of Derrick Henry running all over us in 2015, both dragging tacklers through the gaps and then showing flashes of speed in the open. Please, let our coaches see the same and scheme around it.

The only way Shipley is at all similar to McCaffrey is the color of their skin. He's worse than McCaffrey in every single way on the playing field. McCaffrey is faster, more agile, quicker, and better at breaking the first tackle. He's also better at receiving and okay at pass protection.
I've been saying for 2 years here that Mafah is better than Shipley, and compared him to all the Alabama running backs of old. He's not Henry, but I could easily see him starting at Alabama.

Mafah looks like he is much more patient than Shipley. I also wonder if his running style somehow makes blocking for him easier. I know one thing, breaking off a long run and 8 and 9 yard carries off tackle energize the offensive linemen.

Mafah 6.1 vs 5.11 for Ship. I think he can see the holes a tad better. Also, there were jokes yesterday.

They have two different styles and hopefully Mafah's playing time does increase. Maybe Dabo is/was mad about the missed blocking assignment in the FSU game, but seems like we've often been using Shipley in situations where he isn't best suited to succeed. Shipley is far more effective in space and it seems as if we've been trying to shoehorn him into situations that are more suited for Mafah. I'm a fan, not a coach, and so I'm sure there were reasons Mafah wasn't seeing the field as much, but we're a far stronger team when both are available and being used to their strengths.
