Bringing him out of retirement. Does Ray Tanner and him have ties? Interesting 🤔

Home run hire.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

So was Lou Holtz.

Please elaborate on how that worked out for ‘ya.

Tanner is the gift that keeps on giving… hopefully he’s still at the helm when they inevitably hire another football coach in a couple of years

Mainieri played the NIL game at LSU before NIL was NIL. He’ll be fine.

Got to give '09 a thumbs up. I've never done that before. This new hire is only enlarging his retirement check. Tanner new him in his old days and thinks he can pull the rabbit out of the hat again. Probably won't work but we will see. Wonder if he will keep that all powerful hitting coach Monte on board ? I'm guessing Tanner made that part of the deal. I hope so.

Rumor is that he’s keeping Lee on, which would be glorious, but I don’t know if we’re that lucky. I’m shocked Tanner went this way. Thought for sure he’d stick with Lee or hire Landon Powell. This coach is almost 67, older than Spurrier was when he became their football coach.

Lees going to El Cid.

Let’s spin it for a second. Prior to this nice run through the NCAA men’s basketball tournament (well done btw) Clemson faithful have been clamoring for a new basketball coach. What if Calipari came to Clemson? Would you take him? He’s the same age as Carolina’s new baseball coach.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Are you being serious with that comparison

I would not watch or attend a Clemson basketball game until Calipari moved on. The same goes for Pitino. As well as Hugh Freeze in football. At some point your moral compass must outweigh your fandom. I’m also not sure this was a great comparison since Marinari his well respected in baseball circles and to my knowledge has no past discretions. I do think him being from an era before NIL and transfer portal will be a learning curve.

Got to try to keep Lee. All the recruits were pushing for him to be the head coach. Hopefully he goes to el cid and they lose them.

I wonder if Tanner had to run that hire by Dawn Staley & get her approval. That’s who really runs SC athletic department. They go out of their way to appease her & keep her happy.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Probably not since he is a older white male.***

Holy crap this is the most outrage I’ve ever seen from the coots over a coaching hire and I’m loving every bit of it. Even worse than the Muschamp announcement.

They legit might start setting themselves on fire.

Re: Paul Mainieri

Knowing that Ray Tanner hired him means it's probably going to be a flop. But who knows... He's a proven winner, or at least he was in his prime... Last few years at LSU were pretty average for their standard. Could be a home run hire, for sure. Could be a Baseball Lou Holtz.

Hiring a 66 year old to come in and revamp your program sure is interesting. He's going to be the oldest coach in the conference and who knows how many years he's got left, but I'm sure their hope is that he comes in, coaches 4-5 years, gets them back to Omaha a few times, and then helps to line up his successor.

Re: Paul Mainieri

Paul was a legendary college coach at LSU. Most of you obviously know nothing about college baseball if you do not know who Paul Mainieri is. He’s only been gone 3 years. He’s a great coach but he’s gonna need some great assistants because I don’t see him handling the portal and NIL very well. Recruiting has probably passed him by a bit but the game of baseball has not. The guy is a legend.

Re: Paul Mainieri

Most fans don’t know jack squat about anything but their team. Paul is a national championship manager and hasn’t forgot how to coach. LSU is the gold standard of college baseball and I’m sure a few years off and a fresh start with high but not unrealistic expectations may rejuvenate him. Will be interesting.

Re: Paul Mainieri

Jun 11, 2024, 12:18 PM [ in reply to Re: Paul Mainieri ]

Yeah, I know nothing about college baseball lol... Of course I know who Mainieri is, I don't live under a rock. But his last 3 years at LSU they were winning like 35 games, that's underachieving for that program. He's also 66 years old and has been out of the game for several years. There's a reason Jack Leggett was run off a decade ago too. A lot has changed in the game of college baseball and that South Carolina program isn't recruiting off of 2010&2011 national titles anymore. It isn't some foregone conclusion that he's going to turn them into a powerhouse again.

Re: Paul Mainieri

Jun 11, 2024, 12:36 PM [ in reply to Re: Paul Mainieri ]

The only reason he retired is because he was getting ready to be run off. LSU didn’t want him as their coach anymore. He retired so he wouldn’t have to be fired. Don’t believe me ask LSU baseball fans. This would be like hiring Bobby Bowen after he retired from FSU. The fans were ready for new leadership.
