Before Dabo Swinney, Clemson was the 26th winningest (most wins) program in America. Not too shabby I guess?
But then enter one Dabo Swinney. In his 15 seasons he’s elevated the program to 14th in total wins. Over the course of history that places Clemson in the upper echelon of all-time.
During Dabo’s tenure (since 2009) we are 2nd in total wins, behind only Alabama. Elite for sure. That’s 15 years and #2 to only Nick Saban.
And then enter the “decline”, the years from 2021-2023. Yea, we haven’t made the playoffs but it’s not like we’ve fallen off the map. We’ve averaged 10 wins a year.
Over the 3 seasons of “decline” we are the 6th ranked P5 program in terms of wins.
1. UGA 42 2. Michigan 40 3. Alabama 36 4. Ohio State 33 5. Oregon 32 T6. Clemson 30 T6. Notre Dame 30
That’s not too bad folks! Granted we got spoiled by making the playoffs every year and making the championship game 4 out of 6 years, but that kind of thins doesn’t come around every single season. There will be lulls in the program.
So all in all, no, we haven’t been necessarily elite if that definition applies only to playoff teams, but being 6th in the country in wins during a “down” period shouldn’t be overlooked.
Clemson hasn’t fallen off the map folks. We’re still bringing in great players on par with those that won us two national championships. We are a QB away from getting right back into that elite status.

#3 FSU game showed just how close we were in our worst year. 2022 was 1 point from CFP
the recruiting struggles ... let's just say that Ohio State , Texas, USC, you name the top recruiting class team - well they haven't sniffed any championship games in years. Ohio State loses to UofM, that's garbage. That's like Clemson or Alabama losing to Oklahoma or Texas in back to back to back games. lol. hasn't and won't happen.
all of the top QB recruits . they are always busts except for one per class. It's whatever. It's fake news trying to cash grab the haven't seen good football in decades alumni.
sit with class. grab the popcorn. Clemson Football did not go anywhere. It became process oriented. And is the new Alabama.

I wouldn't say Ohio State hasn't sniffed a championship game in years. Season before last they were a missed field goal from the championship game. Had they gotten there, I have no doubt they would have beaten TCU. Texas was nearly in the championship game last year.

There has been a decline. We lost some commitments with coaching changes, missed in some WRs and QB, and now we are in the rise again.

Is it really a decline? Is progress measured in a straight line with either a positive or negative slope? Could it be that performance more of a cubic line with noise along the way? In one of Dabo's early pressers, he said we would not win a championship every year. He said his goal was for us to be consistently good and some years a championship would immerge out of the consistency. I am paraphrasing of course.

I saw a decline the last whatever years. I saw it. I don't mind saying it. Doesn't hurt my feelings. I always knew we were battling through some stuff and there were no quick fixes. I see us on the rise now.

So that constitutes a decline from the playoff realm, but the point here is too much is made of a “decline” when we have the 6th most wins in the country over that span.

I guess, but last year didn't shock anyone. We saw the decline in action, no matter what the Win Loss record stated. Also, the ACC has sucked. We were absolutely elite and then we were not for a bit.

The ACC did not suck last year. You're buying the koolaid that the press is serving. Don't fall for it.

Well Pig, Lester didn't specify the acc sucked last year, just a statement that the acc sucks. And he's right. That most definitely adds to the perception of "in decline "
As for last year, less fsu, the acc did suck. All 3 of the top teams got beat pretty soundly in their bowl game.
Irregardless, I haven't seen any credible sources (including espn) that has suggested Clemson has fallen off a cliff, just declined. It's more than just wins and losses.

No...I am talking overall for many years. Also, we don't encounter a National Championship caliber team generally in the ACC. I don't think ever. For many years we were the only National Championship caliber team in the conference. Nobody else was even close.

We are 30-10 the last 3 seasons, averaging 10 wins a season. Compared to our previous results (the 6 years prior), that is a decline. To most standards, that is a cause to celebrate...

Great post OP.
You should have mentioned that during our '3 year decline', the Tigers won a conference championship and 2 bowl game. Neither Ohio State nor Oregon have won much of anything in a long time. If Clemson fans and sports writers quit talking about 3 years with 30 wins as a "decline" more would notice that we are an elite program today. We own TOSU and ND, and only Bama had a superior program over the past decade.
And the fact is our football player graduation rate is second to none. The sport we all love is COLLEGE football. I love us as we are. So do most real Clemson fans.
Go Tigers!!

We have had 30 wins, but once you look under the hood, how many of those wins were against strong opponents?

Our current 5-game winning streak, 3rd best in the country today, wasn't exactly against scrubs there. Notre Dame, UNC, Ga Tech, SCar and KY was a pretty decent stretch.
Don't goal line fumble vs Duke and make a FG or two, hit that FG late vs FSU and keep them at bay there at the end - today's narrative is vastly different. When I look under the hood I see a team a lot closer to glory than many think.

Yes, there were lots of Tommy Bowdenesque ifs and excuses last year, but the fact is we ended up ranked 20 and only beat one ranked team (ND, #14) Decent but certainly not elite.

For me Clemson’s downturn was losing to the “chickens” for 5 years in a row. Since then the ship has been righted. Winning conference championships and National Championships has been and will always be icing on the cake. Here’s to more curb stomping of the “dirt peckers” and more championships in the years to come. Go Tigers

Our so called decline is directly related to the false national rating of DJU...he was not ever going to be a first line QB...slow feet, poor reading of coverages and regular lapses in execution! I wished him well at OSU...FSU is just too much of a stretch...get a QB with good tools and develop him into a great QB!

Based on this Texas is in great decline (SEC has a stroke)...Auburn, Florida, Tennessee in great decline...storied Nebraska, Penn State, Wisconsin, FSU suck...where else is decline so pronounced...USC really should be buried before they stink up college football...Miami blows!

We declined no matter what that stat is brah. You most not know much about the game. Everyone on this board knows down deep that we declined for a bit. It's an idiotic thread by people who are either too thin skinned to face reality or who are just in denial. We declined whether we won games or not. We are now ascending again.

Everything declines from its peak. What bothers me is some of these offseason articles that try to claim Mario Cristobal or Dan Lanning is a higher ranked Coach than Dabo because he does not use the portal. Lanning is an up and coming Coach with potential. Cristobal recruits well. Dabo has won more in the decline than either of these two have.
