almost never took a day off, if you know what I’m saying. They were #e11-bent on winning, and they didn’t play down to the level of the opponent: they just went out there and rolled, just as they would have against another ranked team. That’s also what WE did in the championship years.
We don’t have that intensity any more, and we haven’t had it for several years now. Some individual players still do, but it’s not across the board.
Don’t tell me it’s the result of NIL; we were seeing this before NIL took hold. And it’s not the transfer portal: if anything, that should be an inducement to play harder for those who want more playing time wherever they can get it. Where did we go wrong?

Go see how many people on there were former Alabama players or friends who played with him at Kent State. Not many.
He is a serious man who took his job seriously, understood the mission, and hired serious people to make it happen, and as a result his players took it seriously. They weren’t surrounded by unqualified walk-on gomers on the team and nepo staff hires who were there as a favor from Saban.
It starts at the top and trickles down from there to the players.

You are spot on. Just look at Coach Saban’s coaching tree.

I cannot argue with that - CJ Spiller is the only success

The others have not worked out and shouldn't have been hired in the first place. I don't know if it's true that he and Brent Venables butted heads on a regular basis because BV was the only assistant who wasn't a yes man (that was the rumor), but I do get the distinct impression that Dabo wants people who came out of HIS system and think like HE does. We can't afford to get stale in this sport, but we have.

Not sarcastic—what’s leading you to define Spiller as successful in his current role?

of the offense that worked: they carried the offense. And I don’t see any dropoff in quality this season. The passing game has improved, but the RBs are holding up their end. Spiller’s bringing in talented backs and “maximizing their potential,” as Will Shipley put it. What’s not to like?

Not sure if it takes the best coaches to coach their rosters, and I am definitely not taking anything away from Saban. When you recruit top 5 every year it can mask any coaching deficiencies. Some of those guys were fired from head coaching gigs and some have found the perfect spots to land in this new era of college football. Spurrier, Dabo and Saban has mentioned you need the dudes. Spurrier quit getting them and bailed out.
Would not say OBrien’s spot is great but it may have been his only option.

Sometimes even people like Dabo can become complacent when going from sharing a bed with his mom in college to making $11,000,000 + a year

but then again, he's getting the huge paycheck and the affluent lifestyle no matter what happens on the field.

He was a good motivator but the level of talent on the team was certainly a big factor. Opposing teams were often defeated before they ran onto the field

Yes, Saban was arguably (clearly?) the best college football coach in history.

Brent Venerables. He is missed more than most will understand. It's the intensity and passion in which he coached that seemed to permeate thru the team, it's sorely lacking now and quite noticable in his absence.
