TNET: Venables sees scrimmage struggles as exception for defense in camp

Venables sees scrimmage struggles as exception for defense in camp

A tough first scrimmage for the Clemson defense was an outlier for the defense's fall camp, says Tigers defensive coordinator Brent Venables. He talks camp and scrimmage standouts, as well as linebacker depth chart. Full Story »

You can tell by how BV describes things when they don't go well with his D, it's like he puts all or most all of the blame on himself, and you can tell by the words he uses that he is hurt by the way his guys played yesterday. That is what it takes I guess to be the great coach that I believe that he is!!!

If I was one of the players slacking off yesterday I would have a hard time facing him with that dissappointment obvious

He does do this, and I agree that I like it when a coach takes the responsibility on himself. (Remember when Spurlid seemed to blame everybody, except himself, when coots cooted?. BV? Not a chance. He uses things like this to undo what all the media, and us as fans, have been doing all Summer. Our Defense has been billed as the 'Second Coming", and they need a little return to reality. BV knows this, and my guess is, he will berate them and reel them in and get them to refocus, and all of us will be the beneficiaries of the "adjustment". It's easy to read all the headlines and believe it's all true, and there is no work left to be done. We are going to be great, and I can't wait to see us be the first undefeated, untied team in this new era of football.

As expected. This is camp and was the first scrimmage. It's supposed to be hard, and struggling is good for us right now. It's only going to make us better.

Logan Rudolph

At least, it doesn't appear as if he will be facing any severe disciplinary actions. The only reason why I was concerned was because Chad Kelly threw a punch at practice and was kicked off the team after being escorted off the field by campus police.

Watching Venables in that interview was weird

Aug 12, 2018, 4:15 PM

That was the happiest "Angry" he's ever been.

It's like, he upset the Defense made silly penalties and lack aggression, but underneath there is still a smile. It's almost as if he knows the defense could be the most dominate unit he's ever took the field with.

And maybe he knows just how good our offense is going to be this year.

Venables Will Get These Little Things Fixed!

Aug 12, 2018, 8:20 PM

BV will have these guys all fixed, well prepared and ready to line up and win. It really is just that plain and simple. These little bad practice days happen, and they sharpen our team, because they cause guys to refocus and get away from all those accolades that have been printed all year about our studly Defense. These are moments when great coaches (and BV is one) get to use as teaching moments. It had to happen, but it just is a part of the process. We will be so good on D. Mark that down!

I think Coach V would like to go one on one with some of these reporters who don’t seem to listen very well. I know a few are joining late but “how did so and so do” aint exactly food for deep discussion especially when he just talked about them. Not a single question about schemes and how far along the frogs CBs are with installs. One position that always makes me nervous is safety with Muse back there. Anybody ask about depth there?
