They would ALWAYS have folks lining up to play them. The money just makes sense.
They will only join the conference (and make no mistake it would seem the ACC has positioned themselves to be that conference) would be if the playoff structure required it.
But no one was gonna stop 'enabling' them.

Or at least from a football point of view.
The potential of getting them to join in football.
But honestly the only real downside I see is the loss of 1 bowl payout a year.
Doesn't seem like a huge loss, especially if there is any renegotiating of the TV contract based on it. It also does enhance the ACC OOC schedule which may help perception.

tie ins. Non-BCS only. They keep bowl revenue, but ACC won't pay for travel expenses. Avg travel expense payout was $1.5 mil last year so as long as the Irish don't play in the Chick-fil-a bowl it will be a wash money wise since that's the only bowl with a payout much larger than travel expenses.

a few times when they had the better record, also we jumped BC one year when they had a better record than us. So I don't think we should be high and mighty about certain teams jumping over other teams to be in a better bowl, when Clemson has done that numerous times over the past 12 years.

When they took basicly the same deal ND offered us years back I remember thinking what kind of idiots the big east guys were and sure is the world now Swofford offers them the same deal except worse. Notre Dame is nothing but bowl stealers in this deal.

ACC football gets:
1) Change in perception. Don't believe so? Look how much is already being talked about (99% positive). May only be 5 games but with our teams being better and this addition all of the sudden the ACC is looking pretty strong to outsiders. There is no value on that!
2) A bump in the TV contract
3) Enormous exposure now (People around here don't realize how much ND football is followed across this country. Now that ND is playing a bunch of ACC schools, the entire conference is gonna be more scrutinized and well known. The brand is definitely going to be more recognized. All 5 of those games will be nationally televised every year too. People around here might deny it, but that doesn't mean it isn't true!)
4) Better bowl tie ins. Our bowl lineup will soon change for the better and it will be thanks to the Irish. Afraid they might jump us? Be a better team and we'll be fine!
5) More clout at the playoff table. Revenue splitting is about to be talked about. Swofford on the committee. ACC conference position is strengthened with Notre Dame in the mix.
6) Possible drop back to 8 conference games. Would be a big plus for the "football" schools or a great potential neutral site payday game in Charlotte or Chicago.
7) A great non-conference matchup for SOS purposes at least every 3 years.
8) It kills the Big 12 expansion and its efforts to be better than the ACC. Ain't happening now. Sorry dude!
This doesn't even count what it does for other sports. This is just a great deal for the ACC.
Plus if they ever did join a football conference it's the ACC and no one else.
Notre Dame really didn't get much. They're not getting any football money from us anyway. They would've kept the Big East tie in instead of the ACC. I think they sured up the future football schedule and added a stronger alliance when it comes to negotiating the new playoff. We're not giving them but 1/15th of the basketball $ that's it. A great trade off if you ask me. If we move away from football too this really really helps the ACC. I couldn't be happier!

other than the bowl tie ins, which helped the Big East greatly in some of their agreements so it had nothing to do with my 8 points. I didn't even speak on anything about the other sports except in passing so I don't feel the need to speak about that.

I'm curious about your 2nd point. How does it bump up the contract when their football program is not part of the conference? Plus NBC owns the tv contract to ND and won't share any money with the ACC.

Guess IT was Notre Dame's idea on the buyout raise then..but the Acc lost today IMO! To raise buyout but add a team because of it's prestige and only get about an extra mil a school is good. then i missed something..

So...since ND is not a football member of the ACC that means they can avoid that huge buyout and actually join another conference in football?

I understand that but in football they are not a member. I'm sure they would be some buyout for the contract of 5 games but I don't see them having to pay 50 mil to leave when they are not a member of the ACC in football. Maybe I'm missing something here.

What major conference would only let a team join for football and all the other sports be with another conference? Or visa versa? It's a multi level deal, with the exception of football with a minimum of five (5) games there. If they want out for either it's $50M....

well maybe you don't see it but I've already read 4 reports from Conf comms, ESPN et al and they all say 50 mil buyout starting NOW and for everyone including ND and BTW I hate the buyout. That was done to keep FSU and CU out of any other conf. MD too probably.

join for football it'd be the ACC. Plus they probably wouldn't want to split their sports up like that. That'd be a million to one shot if they did. Never say never though.

ND is the only one that benefits....
Sep 12, 2012, 7:51 PM

The NBC contract in only thru 2016 season. ND knows that their football audience has decreased yealy. HOw often will Clemson play them in the next 5 years and just how much cut will they get from the game? Plus, ND has 27 months to exit the Big East, so, the ACC could recieve little benefits from football. I think they realize that NBC contract is not going to as attractive then.
Odds are high for an ACC team to win NC in baseball and basketball. Even if they don't win it, plenty of ACC teams get into the NCAA basketball tourney,,,and everytime one wins a game, the money increases. ND will be getting a cut of that money and other ACC teams lose some of their cut.
This is a horrible move that will hurt the ACC in the longrun.

The 50m exit fee is exorbitant... But it's times like this that I'm thankful our fanbase is filled with the great people I interact with at tailgates and not solely "message board guy". All one had to do was listen to analysts and fb minds today to understand this was a great move. Yesterday we were a conference in need of more exposure, better games, better tv, more national respect and better bowls. Overnight a magic wand was waved and each of those things were accomplished.
