Legit Question about CFP committee power
Nov 12, 2014, 2:38 PM
|
|
It's all up to people now which is what folks wanted. So my question is, how much power do they have? Is there any recourse for an egregious decision?
Example: If FSU was to win out but by scraping by Miami and winning in OT vs FL so not pretty but undefeated. Say the committee knocked them to #5 simply because they feel the other 4 teams ahead are better despite a loss. FSU is simply left out? Nothing they can say or do?
I'm really curious. They've got Oregon ahead with a loss so why not?

They decide the field. No recourse.

However, I'd argue this point isn't true: "It's all up to people now which is what folks wanted."
I can't speak for everyone, but I've never wanted it to be "up" to anyone except the teams deciding it on the field. And we have a simple already available method to determine the top team in each conference. Why in the heck wouldn't we just let those teams play and decide the champion of champions?

There's 5 conferences if you include the B1G

Which would make for a messy tournament. I'm all in favor of seeding the Big 12, ACC, SEC and PAC champs up and having a playoff. But ND and Ohio State would be really, really upset.

I'd include the Big 10

Then, the best 2 other teams. If folks want voters voting on something, or want polls, or want committees, fine. I don't care how those are chosen (though to be honest I think there should be a path for undefeated "lower" conference champs).
But those are all details and can be worked out. And it provides the closest thing to a champion that college football would've ever seen. Every team (or at least every team in one of the big 6 conferences) would have a clearly defined path to the title that would trump any pretty point opinion components.

I think you'll need one more for what you're trying to accomplish. But if you move to 8, it's essentially what we have now.

Including a undefeated conference champ from a "lower" conference.
And it wouldn't at all, be what we have now. Because now there is no way for on the field performance to automatically trump opinion.

They think they're top 3 every year, and cannot be told otherwise.

They are always over rated and always suck and their fans always think they are the best team in the country. What changes?

Just wanted to prove that no matter what system is in place, some people will always be unhappy.

If Clemson doesn't play in the playoff we'll never be happy.

We might have to win to keep some here from wanting to fire our coaching staff and S&C director.

If FSU wins out. They finish no worse than #2.

I realize that will probably be the case. The question is what if they're not? FSU just plays in the orange bowl and lives with it?

With a loss to UM and a CCG trophy I think FSU deserves it.

I don't think they'll get in with a late season loss. I'm with the committee on this, FSU is begging for a reason to be left out of the tournament. They only make enough plays to win a game. Trust me, I know how dumb that sounds and it's hard on me to make a dumb statment, you know.
FSU just hasn't dominated anyone and everyone is looking for a chink in their armor. I think a late season loss is all it would take to drop FSU to six or seven in the polls.

I afraid that if FSU looses any game, they are out. I think the only team that can loose a game, at this point, and still be in the top four is MSU. And even then, it needs to be a very good loss.
