LEAVING THE ACC

Leaving the ACC would be a colossal… repeat… colossal mistake.
South Carolina left in the mid-60s and it was the biggest mistake their athletic department has ever made. They rue the day they left.
If any decision is made it should be set out several years from now and be made entirely by the board of directors and former football and basketball players and not be driven by Mickey Plyler or David Good or anybody else in Media capacity.
We're in an athletic conference …ACC…that is well respected both athletically and academically and we don't need the approval of some airhead on ESPN.

So if USuC left the ACC in the Mid-60's then how did they win the 1969 ACC championship. I demand a recount. They left to become an independent. There's a world of difference from being an independent and being in a major conference. If Clemson was to leave to be an independent, then yes it would be a big mistake. But if they leave it will more than likely be to join the SEC. The only programs that can make it as an independent are ND (NBC deal) and the service academies. They don't get their money from the athletic programs as such. No athletic scholarships given.

when they left independents could sign as many in football as they wanted for a few years. GT did this too. It didn't do great things fo either. Though GT did get on NC w Ross.

Yes, but the revenue wasn't there to do much with it. Only ND was able to get the publicity mostly because played Michigan and the "Real" USC every year and at the time those 3 were the real powerhouses in college football.

and not very discerningly IMO.
The circumstances under which UofSC left the ACC in 1970, without first having a new conference to call home, were entirely different and in no way even remotely associated with the current landscape of college football.
The simple fact of the matter is, the ACC's current TV contract, GOR Agreement, and revenue sharing policy are not equitable or sustainable and the member schools know it, so this is not some hastily-conceived knee-jerk reaction. There are already at least four or five schools pursuing exit strategies and more are likely to jump on the bandwagon.
It's just a matter of time before the ACC's decades-long lack of effective proactive leadership culminates in leagues eventual cessation.

Usuck left the ACC based on two things, Dietsel's vision of grandeur after one single semi-successful year and Frank McGuire's resentment of the ACC for its treatment of Gamechumps at away games. He had some justification, but mostly they brought it on themselves by being thuggish consistently. I remember a game I saw in the early 70s when Maryland played at Columbia and a nasty brawl broke out on TV and Lefty Driesel tried to break up the fights and gameturkey John Ribock slugged him while one of the other guys were holding his arms and he had a massive shiner on the coaches show the next day. I do not know about the wisdom of moving to the SEC or whether they'd take us, but the reasons for doing it or not doing it are not comparable to the Poultry those many years ago. They were extremely lucky the SEC thought it would be good to have a consistent sure win, and that remains so today.

when the ACC changed/increased the minimum standardized testing score requirements for awarding athletic scholarships, so he could no longer recruit functionally illiterate players from NY and NJ.

at the time, waa a bigger proponent of leaving the ACC than McGuire was. When they pulled out of the ACC it was Dietzel who said, "USUC will become the Notre Dame of the south!"

So, your stance is that Clemson should forfeit somewhere in the range of $40M PER YEAR going forward?

Little brother implies that we're blood relatives. They're more like the toothless illiterate hillbilly neighbors who moved in and immediately started dragging down the property values.

Fordham used to be a national football power house. So did Army and Navy. Arkansas was in the SWC as was SMU. Georgia Tech was a powerhouse in the SEC.
Just saying, things change over time. Present circumstances are no guarantee of future circumstances.
